Reception age child poor concentration

Has anyone had a child who, at reception age, lacked good concentration skills but who caught up with peers at a later date?

It has been noted that our child has relatively poor concentration skills. This has been noticed at school, at home and during hobbies.

We are of course open to the potential reasons for this and fully appreciate that there could be some sort of underlying special needs. I think the school are going to explore this further.

However I was just wondering whether anyone had a child with similar issues who ‘caught up’ in terms of concentration as they matured? Or whether most people who have experienced similar have found that it eventually led to some sort of diagnosis.

Thanks In advance.

It can honestly go either way hence why they wont diagnose ADHD until 6.

My daughter is year 2 and her adhd in reception was of a level where it could have gone either way. My son is currently in reception and his concentration is significantly an issue and we all suspect adhd.

But it's hard to tell really until year 1

Thanks for your reply. I guess it’s just a waiting game. She’s not even 5 for a few more months

In my experience from working at a school, children who struggle with concentration can improve their skills but keeping on track can be hard for lots of children and it’s something that will always require effort.

As your child gets older there will be things they can do at school to aid his concentration and allow him to produce work to the best of his ability, and there are things you can do at home now to help. Google listening and attention games and although you’ll get suggestions for things that are more suited to a classroom, you will find plenty that can be done at home.

Thanks fairycakewings. I’ll definitely look up those games.
