Group Lunches

I've just been out for lunch with six other people. All but one and myself paid by card.
They all paid exact amount. Myself and other person paid by cash. There was a service charge and as I had paid the balance by cash and the other person took their change it ended up that I lost out as the service charge had been taken.
When I pointed this out to the others their attitude was 'what's wrong with that?'
Should I just have accepted it?

Yes, just accept it. They aren't complaining so why are you?!

HDready · 04/03/2022 18:07

@Abaababa

Yes, just accept it. They aren't complaining so why are you?!
Isn’t the point that OP paid her share plus the service charge for the entire meal? Doesn’t seem fair
TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 04/03/2022 18:08

Struggling to follow. Are you saying you ended up paying the full service charge or that nobody paid a service charge so it went unpaid?

SouthOfFrance · 04/03/2022 18:10

I don't really understand what happened here Op.

Why didn't you just pay what you owed plus your share of the service charge? Not sure how you are out of pocket?

BertieQueen · 04/03/2022 18:10

So you paid the whole service charge and they couldn’t see the problem? I wouldn’t have been impressed with that.

How much did you pay for the service charge?

SouthOfFrance · 04/03/2022 18:19

If thats what happened send a group message saying 'I've ended up paying for my meal plus the entire service charge, as noone else added their share onto their payment. I work it out as £4 extra each, hope that's OK. Bank details are xxx'

Chloemol · 04/03/2022 18:49

@Abaababa

Yes, just accept it. They aren't complaining so why are you?!
Why!

Say the meals where £10 each plus service charge

They all paid £10 she paid £10 plus service charge.

Op divide the service charge by 6 and tell the other 5 what they owe you

Polly345 · 04/03/2022 19:01

Because I paid with cash when the change came back, the service charge was deducted so I ended up paying for it as everybody else had paid their exact amount
I suppose my point is how everybody just accepted that was fine and said how good value the meal was.
It was inexpensive but I don't think that's the point.

TooMuchToblerone · 04/03/2022 19:03

How much did you lose?

Abaababa · 04/03/2022 20:10

Your post wasn’t clear at all! Given you paid extra, yeah that is not OK. Why wasn’t the service charge apportioned equally to start with? I can see how in a group people can be passive and brush it off as no big deal but obviously is to the person stuck footing the extra 17%. Take it as a lesson learned and pay with your card and not last either.

Polly345 · 04/03/2022 20:31

£5
Not a lot I admit. But it's the way they all thought it was absolutely fine.
Yep. Lesson learned...

YANBU
Everyone should of paid their share plus service charge

lap90 · 04/03/2022 22:22

Yeah that's not cool.

Tbh, when you paid cash you should have said you were paying 'x' amount (what you ate plus your bit of service charge) and left the rest to it.

arethereanyleftatall · 04/03/2022 22:26

£5 service charge for a meal for 7 people. So, it was £7 each and you paid £12. It's a bit unfair, but you'll have to suck it up; you can't really ask people for their 70p each without looking a bit silly.

arethereanyleftatall · 04/03/2022 22:27

(Assuming 10% service charge for my maths!)

RandomMess · 04/03/2022 22:29

Very cheeky of them!!!

Madre123 · 04/03/2022 22:35

A group of friends go out together weekly and each put a certain amount of cash into a kitty as soon as we arrive which more than covers what we eat and drink...al fair, no confusion and everyone happy

Mooloolabababy · 04/03/2022 22:37

So there was a service charge for the meal due to numbers and you ended up paying it for everyone? Nah definitely unfair, they are cheeky fuckers op,

Polly345 · 04/03/2022 22:57

Also the other person paying cash took more of the change than he was due.
It doesn't matter about the amount.
Asking them all to pay another 70p when the bill came wasnt an option as they all paid first and went to leave.
It was the fact the service charge was mentioned, ignored and I was the one who ended up paying £14 for a £9 quick lunch

YANBU. It isn't about how much more you paid - it's the fact you landed it for everyone and they just shrugged and said "oh well". CFs!
