Tory party + Russian Money

AIBU in suggesting that the Tory party have purposely delay some sanctions on some Russians because they are party donors and it allows them to get their affairs in order. Thud making most of the sanctions ineffective anyway.

The more I read around it, the more concerned I am. Particular the uggestion of Jacob Rees Mogg and insider training.

Agree. I was amazed that many of our sanctions have not been implemented yet to enable folk to move their money and sell properties. Chris Bryant MP was on the radio on weds discussing it. Funny how BJ made out we were world leading.

Unlike Russia, we actually still respect the rule of law. Arbitrary seizure of foreign nationals assets is most probably illegal under our current legislation and if we do go down the path of confiscation on a whim, we can't then turn around and moan when other, less friendly, nations do exactly the same thing against GB assets.

Also, I'd expect that before we start seizing assets of those who can afford the best legal representation, we should really be making sure our case is solid before we get taken to the cleaners.

As for Rees-Mogg, if he did use insider information, he can be prosecuted for it. That's against the law.

Proudboomer · 04/03/2022 08:32

Why do we even bother with sanctions when the US is still buying Russian oil so actively financing Putin and his warmongering. What good is sanctioning the oligarchs when you are still buying their oil?

@pazuzu come off it. You can put a freeze on assets to stop them being sold off and the money shipped off elsewhere before sanctions could be applied.

They've basically said to their russian donors: we might seize your assets in a couple of months. Do what you like with them in the meantime.

They refused to publish the Russian report for a reason. Do people get what's happening here? We're basically going to war with Russia and our own government is massively compromised by enemy agents. It's been going on for years. And the elephant in the room is brexit, which wouldn't have been won but for Russian money.

My partners father is a lord and tends to hear things, OP you are correct

Grin Grin Grin

Course he'll get prosecuted. Excellent joke to wake up to

Agree @Francescaisstressed

Pazuzu · 04/03/2022 09:09

@GrendelsGrandma Come off what?

On what grounds can we freeze assets? Being Russian is not illegal.

Are we going to war? Maybe, but not yet. Therefore, as it stands, we don't have the legal power to arbitrarily seize assets. Hence the delay.

On one hand, fine seize Russian assets BUT we are not Russia and therefore, we follow the rule of law. We are better than them.

Cyclingforcake · 04/03/2022 09:13

Isn’t this any Gavin Williamson has been given a knighthood - he knows too much.

We clearly are sanctioning certain Russians where there are grounds and powers to do so.

Would people have been happy when we went on our Middle Eastern holidays on somewhat questionable intelligence, if other countries would have used these jaunts as a reason to seize GB assets? That's why we have to be careful. The rules we use, then get used against us.

Proudboomer · 04/03/2022 09:23

Tell Biden to stop buying Russian oil but that is never going to happen as we still act like the lap dog of the USA.

ThoseFestiveLights · 04/03/2022 09:32

Yanbu - the Tory party has been massively funded by Russian donors and has colluded in Russia manipulating elections (and Brexit) for years. And now we are here and Boris has his hands tied.
