Hi. Posting here again because I’m a bit desperate!

I’m getting a root canal in a few months due to an infected root in an upper tooth. I didn’t have any obvious swelling or abscess on the gum, but I was getting horrible pain which was going from my ear across my face and across my upper and lower jaw. It was horrible and there was times I was being sick with the pain- it felt like a train had rammed into my face! I had a couple of courses of antibiotics to get me through until the root canal and it helped the pain and since then it’s been fine. The tooth still hurts to bite on but I don’t have any bad face/jaw/ear pain anymore thankfully.

But today I started getting a weird feeling in my mouth, like as if I had something stuck to the inside of my lip/cheek. It started to feel weirder and I suddenly realised it felt numb, like the feeling after a jag. I’ve looked in the mirror and there’s a lump on the inside of my lip exactly where I’m getting the numb feeling, just on the inside of my lip at my premolar (I think that’s what it’s called anyway!). It’s about a cm and when I smile it feels so weird, like as if it’s numb and droopy like after a dental injection. There’s no obvious swelling or lump when I look in the mirror, it’s only when I look inside my mouth and under my lip I can see it.
I’m absolutely fine health wise apart from this and I don’t have any other symptoms. The pain from the infection is fine since the last course of antibiotics, and although I still need a root canal, it’s not excruciating like it was before.

But obviously with this new lump/numb feeling I’m a bit worried. It’s on the other side of my mouth though and is a bottom tooth so I guessed it would be unlikely it’s related to the infection and it’s maybe just bad timing? Has anyone else had this and know what it could be?

Thanks so much in advance x

I would call 111 and ask for an emergency appointment with a dentist.

Thanks. Its not really painful it’s just numb on that area of my lip/cheek so I wasn’t sure if it was related to the infection or just coincidental and bad timing. x

Ring your dentist in the morning for an emergency appointment

I have this but on the bottom jaw. I had to have a special kind of ct scan and they said the infection was sitting on the facial nerve hence the severe pain and then numbness. Im now due to have the tooth out, if i get lumps on the gum i just apply a little pressure and puss pours out Sad.

this sounds similar to when i had a gum boil, a collection of pus in the gum caused by an infection i think, i think you have a dental emergency and should get help ASAP

Person123456 · 04/03/2022 02:06

maybe the antibiotics haven't quite cleared up the infection? or its spread? it definitely sounds like an emergency though

Graphista · 04/03/2022 02:20

Wise to get it checked out but in all likelihood what's happened is you've naturally altered your bite to accommodate the infected root even though it's not overtly painful it's a subconscious thing and you've irritated the mouth lining where the lump is and that's how your body has responded to protect the area.

I'm sure dr/dentist will say similar but no harm getting it checked to be on safe side (and maybe get that root canal faster!)

Thanks for the replies. I decided to leave it today to see if it improved as I was working anyway but it hasn’t, although it also hasn’t got worse which is good. I’ll see how it is tomorrow and take it from there

It doesn’t really feel like an ulcer, it’s more like a big hard bubble. It’s not really sore it’s just uncomfortable and feels numb. Know when you get an injection at the dentist and it feels like your mouth is all droopy when you smile? That’s how it feels!

It’s on my bottom right jaw, but my infected tooth is on my upper left jaw so I wasn’t sure if it could even spread like this or if it’s just an unfortunate coincidence!

That’s exactly what I was thinking it could be too!Smile

Sounds like an abscess. Sometimes they aren’t painful. You will likely need to have the tooth extracted. Why did you have to wait months for root canal? It should have been started after the course of antibiotics.
