Should I be concerned about a sore throat?

My parents are coming down this weekend to babysit so me and my BF can have a long overdue night out together.
DM has just told me that she has a throat infection. She is taking painkillers and feels reasonably well but is worried she might pass it on to the kids and wants me to decide.

I've never avoided anyone when I've a throat infection before and it wouldn't have occurred to me that she should give the weekend a miss. But the fact she is concerned makes me wonder if I should be more concerned.

Would I be BU to tell her to still come down if she feels well enough? Or should we cancel?

A sore throat could be Covid. That's how it started with me.

TheSoapyFrog · 03/03/2022 18:30

She's done two LFT and both have come back negative.

I have currently had a sore throat and horrific cold that was worse than Covid (very mild for me almost non existent) it isn’t Covid and I’m not cancelling plans for it. It won’t fuck off tbh.

LFT doesn't always pick up Omicron - need to do the PCR to be sure

Sore throat was my first symptom of Covid as well. Started on Friday. LFT on Saturday was negative. LFT on Monday positive.

Get her to take another one!

KitKattaktik · 03/03/2022 18:40

@Mummysgirl12 me too. On day 7 of a horrendous cold, sore throat, coughing like crazy which shows no sign of abating and 3x negative LFT and negative PCR tests done. I'm only staying home because I feel ILL.

Covid started with a sore throat for me a week ago. 2 negative lfts and finally positive on the third night OP. It could be omicron.

SnackSizeRaisin · 03/03/2022 18:43

Does it really make any difference if it is COVID? If she is definitely happy to still come, and you are happy to take the chance of you and the family catching whatever she's got, I would go ahead. It's far more likely your children will infect her than the other way round - children seem to be perpetually snotty at the moment!

My mum has always been very diligent about covid and this time she genuinely doesn't think she has it. She's had covid twice, one of which was the omicron, and she doesn't feel that this is the same.
She will do LFTs tomorrow and before she leaves.
But on the basis this is just a throat infection, I don't know whether to cancel.

I wouldn't cancel. Is a throat infection even contagious once you're on antibiotics?

ThinWomansBrain · 03/03/2022 18:50

I had a sore throat at the start of covid - but I've often had sore throats, I've only had covif once. As long as the LFT is negative, should be fine.

Of course it makes a difference if it's Covid. Not everyone gets away lightly with Covid. I developed Covid and was off work for 4 months and now 7 months later I am still far from fully recovered. I know others who have had long Covid for 22 months and still struggle. Sure, most people are fine but it's a lottery and not everyone is lucky.
