To think employers want too much nowadays

NC as job related.

Do you think employers want too much nowadays? It’s not a 9-5 anymore is it? It’s a 8-6 and then a bit/lot of evening work.

Plus it’s the stress of high expectations. Maybe I’m remembering things wrong, but I’m sure a job used to be a job and as long as you were showing improvements each year that was enough. Seems like expectations have become exponential nowadays. Sound like a right old fart 💨

I think sometimes employees put the expectations on themselves to be seen as over achieving but then their personal life suffers.
I stick to my 9-5. Laptop closes at 5.
Keep work and personal life separate.

OnTopOfThePiano · 02/03/2022 20:36

It’s in your control to not allow that to happen
I work my hours and call out when the workload isn’t achievable prioritise what needs completing
I wouldn’t stay long with a company that expected any more

tttigress · 02/03/2022 20:37

What industry are we talking about?

With the job market being so tight, I would have Thot many employers were happy just to have an employee.

There are some crazy managers out there though, maybe you could just get another job?

Flexitarian · 02/03/2022 20:39

Depends on the culture where you work and the level you are at. No way would I be working dozens of extra hours a week for no extra pay or time back and it isn’t expected. I’ll stick around if a job needs finishing but always make an early dart another day to get my time back. That’s expected at our place.

DolphinFC · 02/03/2022 20:39

Target culture is destroying lives.

Just so deliveries of books and towels can be delivered a little bit faster.

Tee20x · 02/03/2022 20:40

I agree but that's why you have to stand up for yourself and call them out on it when things are unfair and unmanageable.

I make sure my laptop and work phone go off at 5. I don't care what I'm doing or if I'm in the middle of something I pick it up the next day - there's always more work to be done so no point working for free to get things done.

I work flexi so finish at 4 on Thursdays and Fridays. I make sure that happens - if someone schedules a meeting at 4.30 - sure I COULD make it, but why should I? Those aren't my hours? So I decline and ask to rearrange.

TonkaTruckduck · 02/03/2022 20:40

I think wfh has certainly made everything a bit less black and white, historically people would leave the office at 5 and didn't have laptops etc. Now there's a different culture and unless you're very careful it can take over your life.

WonderWomansBoobs · 02/03/2022 20:42

You want to try working retail. You have to put your while life on hold. You could work any shift 8-8 any day. And you get your shifts 3/4 days in advance. Can't plan anything!

Mooserp · 02/03/2022 20:50

Plenty of my colleagues work long hours. Not unusual to receive emails at midnight.
And their health and wellbeing suffers.

Bryonny84 · 02/03/2022 20:52

I used to work in property and there was no such thing as 9-5. You stayed until the job was done/client got the property/deal went through. I loved the job though so I never minded. I was also single at that time so not impacting on a family situation. If I had a job I didn't much like I would be out of there when the clock struck 5.

booplefloof · 02/03/2022 20:54

I am a teacher. I work ridiculous hours.
Even during holidays I am making materials and always discussing ideas/plans with colleagues. It is never ending.

I know I don't have the work/personal life balance right and I feel utterly wiped out by it all.

But I do love my job, so I keep on going. I honestly don't know if I will make it to retirement at this rate though.

Heatherjayne1972 · 02/03/2022 20:57

No no no
I’m out the door at my contracted time

why kill myself in a job where they’d replace me in 5 minutes if they needed to

DoorWasAJar · 02/03/2022 20:57

Presenteeism, target culture, awful sociopathic managers always seem to rise to the top, toxic workplaces - YANBU

BulletTrain · 02/03/2022 20:59

YANBU - but you can change employer to a different working culture. DH has just done it.

ImInStealthMode · 02/03/2022 20:59

Depends on the employer. Mine doesn't expect extra time generally unless it's an emergency (we work in travel, so weather / strike action / cancellation / delay emergencies occasionally befall us).

I sometimes do a bit from home in the evening or work through my lunch but it's by choice, as a manager. Sometimes I want to get a job finished so I can relax more thoroughly.

I absolutely do not and would not expect this of my team. In fact one of them gets (light-heartedly) chastised for answering business social media messages on a weekend; we have an auto-response for a reason.

DoorWasAJar · 02/03/2022 21:00

Care work is the worst, ridiculous shift times, absolute minimum wage, sexual harassment and verbal abuse from racist and perverted coworkers and managers are just sadistic and without a care of the toxic environment they foster.

^This - and too few people employed for the work. I am training my replacement at present - the job would be marvellous if we were both here doing it (there's plenty of work for two) and we'd enjoy it - but they will only pay for one person so I'm off.
RobynMyEmployer · 02/03/2022 21:02

An eight hour office day has always been pretty short compared to a lot of other sectors - nurses, drivers, security guards, factory workers, mechanics, technicians, etc. 35-40 hours has always been the lower end of the full time scale and 60 hours the top.

Yeah, who needs targets. Let people do whatever they want. I mean it’s not like people need to know what to aim for. Mediocrity is order of the day.
DoorWasAJar · 02/03/2022 21:08

I’m training for something different now, looking into going higher in care but I’m over this industry, tbh. I’m really not surprised there’s a huge shortage and the government are trying to bring immigrants to do care work (as much less likely to complain of low wages)

I’m retraining for cyber security/coding/IT soon so I can work remotely for more than minimum wage. I made myself ill working night shifts for a pittance when night shift work is carcinogenic, double shifts when my mother died, laughed at by manager when told them of being asked to copulate on the kitchen table at work with coworker 🤮 (he literally used the word ‘copulate’ and because it was a text message they said it’s not their responsibility as he wasn’t at work when he did it)

Healthcare seems like one of the most toxic industries to work in.

I second that, working in a care home is horrible. We had old men exposing themselves to staff and Groping them, I as strangled by an old women. One staff members miscarried as she was kicked in the stomach. We only had ten minutes per person to get them up in the morning and there was 15 😭 and we had to tidy up the rooms, sort the laundry etc night shift was soo stressful.
Missingindevon · 02/03/2022 21:11

We also had to answer the bloody door to day staff which was difficult as we are getting everyone up and ready from 6-8am. And every time you come back to shift you get a whole list of stuff you've done wrong.

DoorWasAJar · 02/03/2022 21:11

@sst1234 People can see that we’re not living in a meritocracy, why should poor people kill themselves for minimum wage? Treat workers with contempt and you’re obviously not going to get their best efforts.

DoorWasAJar · 02/03/2022 21:13

How come the government was able to change the law so that workers are basically on probation for 2 years, until they get proper protection from unfair dismissal? They did this in April 2013, IIRC, it was only a year of service before that.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/03/2022 21:15

You have to have boundaries.

I work 8-4, I'll often get meeting requests for after 4. I always decline, I don't care what it is. I'll stay on to do extra work in an emergency but on a bog standard day I won't work late for the sake of it. I always "decline and propose new time", the new time is generally 8am. Unsurprisingly, those that want me to stay late don't want to start early!

I'm doing overtime this weekend, I'll be claiming overtime.
