Boycott TUI and similar to support Ukraine?

I think boycotting companies that Russian oligarchs own big stakes in will help Ukraine? That would include holiday companies like TUI (German company but largest single shareholder is Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov) I also can’t deal with the idea that my holidays might enrich the people close to Putin.
What do you think? Are there other companies I could avoid?

I'm just boycotting TUI because they're shit.

LizDoingTheCanCan · 02/03/2022 10:06

Can we boycott the Tories? They're quite happy to cosy up to Russian oligarchs.

But seriously, boycotts are mostly useless, and the only people that suffer are the lower paid workers, who are normal people like the rest of us. Mordashov really doesn't give a shit if you holiday with TUI or anyone else, he'll still be a very very rich man.

kistanbul · 04/03/2022 09:37

TUI will care if people boycott their holidays.

People will still go on holiday and put money into the Spanish etc economy. The lower paid workers won’t lose out.

Companies should be ashamed to have links with Putin-linked billionaires.

IS there any evidence that boycotts make a difference?
The impact would be more likely on the minimum wage earners who work for TUI?? They would lose their jobs??

mudgetastic · 04/03/2022 09:44

Sanctions etc worked for South Africa so yes there is evidence that such actions work

Yes it is shit for normal people adversely affected

It's even more shit for people in the Ukraine

Joystir59 · 04/03/2022 09:46

I still feel weird about buying south African produce after all those years of boycotting it. Everything that shuns Russia helps.

TheVanguardSix · 04/03/2022 09:47

@Otherpeoplesteens

I'm just boycotting TUI because they're shit.
That's good enough for me! I haven't used TUI in 7 years this May in fact (it was so shit, the dates are branded into my bank of bad experiences! Grin).
Smartiepants79 · 04/03/2022 09:51

Sanctions are not the same as boycotts.
One is imposed by government and is bound by certain laws.
One is an individual choice.
One has more power than the other.

Brefugee · 04/03/2022 09:53

I think boycotts do work, i remember during Apartheid requests for us to boycott South African companies came from black leaders there.

I do wonder that calls to boycott TUI come before people demanding resignations or investigations into politicians taking Russian money.

TBH i think boycotts work best when everyone does it at the same time, as when we picked a day to boycott Shell petrol stations. That really concentrates the mind of shareholders.

EffOrfagain · 04/03/2022 09:54

People are usually keen to boycott companies that they don't use much anyway.

donquixotedelamancha · 04/03/2022 10:05

Indeed. Ending the slave trade, fighting segregation on buses in the US, slashing use of fur in fashion, ending Nestle's high pressure sake of breast milk- there are thousands of successful examples.

Just look at how anxious companies get when accused of misdeeds, even if they accusations are bollocks.

kistanbul · 04/03/2022 10:48

I agree that not booking a family holiday through TUI won’t end a war, but it will send a messaget that consumers don’t want their money going to Putin-alighted people.

It will make business think twice about who they do business with.

it would help in your case, OP, if you write them a letter (not email) telling them what you did and why
