When someone says they’re going into “town”, what does that mean to you?

Having a debate with DH and wonder what this term means to other people? To me, it means going into the centre of the town I live in

Town = Manchester City Centre

The local towns are named/ abbreviated when discussing them. So we’d say we were going for a meal in Alty (Altrincham) or there’s a new X opened in Stockport, but if you say someone works in town or town was heaving on Saturday etc that means central Manchester.

Mostly these days it’s said in the context of ‘I can’t be bothered with town’ let’s just go into …. Instead’ (with that being the name of our actual small town that we can walk into!)

SmackMyDonkey · 01/03/2022 21:29

It would mean, to me, going to the centre of the nearest city/town.

HaveringWavering · 01/03/2022 21:29

I live in zone 3 London now and my husband and I often say that we are “going into London Town” if we go to central London for fun (as opposed to “into the City” for work). But we’re just being silly.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 01/03/2022 21:30

We used to go ‘to the top of the road’

Meaning One Stop…but now we don’t have a top of the road (as such)

KatherineJaneway · 01/03/2022 21:30

I'd say they were going into the centre of the nearest town or city.

Namechangeroo1234 · 01/03/2022 21:31

To your local town/shops etc

DramaAlpaca · 01/03/2022 21:32

I live just ouside a small village. If I say I'm going into town it means I'm going to the nearest large town.

knittingaddict · 01/03/2022 21:33

It would mean going to the city centre where we live - shops, restaurants etc.

steff13 · 01/03/2022 21:33

I would think the person lived rurally, and were going to the nearest town for shopping or whatever.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 01/03/2022 21:33

During the day, I'd assume it meant someone was going to the city centre for shopping.
At night, it means they're going out eg clubbing, to a bar.

hairypaws · 01/03/2022 21:34

Going into the city centre of Glasgow. If I was going to the shopping centre in my town it would be going to the centre.

mizzo · 01/03/2022 21:34

When I'm being me it means the local town centre.
When I'm a character in an Agatha Christie, it means London.

DoorLion · 01/03/2022 21:35

If I say it it means I am taking a five minute walk down the road to the shops, as we live close to the town centre.
I might also say it to mean going to London, but in a kind of arch, self conscious way, like I am in a 1930s novel.

DoorLion · 01/03/2022 21:36

@mizzo

When I'm being me it means the local town centre. When I'm a character in an Agatha Christie, it means London.
We had the same thought!
Mummyoply · 01/03/2022 21:37

Going 'into town' means going to the nearest Town to the shops/library/museum etc

Going 'down town' means going to the pubs or a club

Going 'to town on.....' means having a very strong word with someone about something you are very unhappy about.

EmpressSuiko · 01/03/2022 21:37

For me it means I’m going to the main/big city/town to go shopping 🛍

WeAllHaveWings · 01/03/2022 21:38

Into local town centre shopping, bank, lunch, night out etc

If not local town I would call it by its name instead

GracieLouFreeebush · 01/03/2022 21:39

I’m going to town means im off shopping in the city centre.

Im off into town means a night out

OverByYer · 01/03/2022 21:39

in the day - going into the local town centre to shop
in the evening - going into the town centre for drinks

UniversalAunt · 01/03/2022 21:39

In to the city - in to the City of London e.g. Square Mile.
Go up West is the West End of London e.g. Covent Garden, Oxford Street, Bond Street, at a push Knightsbridge, for bigger shops, theatres, clubs.
In to town - in to central London, say what is now zone 1, for shopping, entertainment & work.

TheChosenTwo · 01/03/2022 21:40

‘Up to town’ means London to dh and I. 30 minutes on the train, we do it semi regularly.
If I said it to the dc it would mean the shops of the town we live in. Would probably say “going into town” to them,

needmoreshinys · 01/03/2022 21:41

weirdly had this conversation with DS earlier,

I said my sister might meet us in town meaning London and he was confused because I also might say, come on we need to go to town meaning our local town

BigupPemberleyMassive · 01/03/2022 21:41

So what did your DH say it means and what do you mean by it?

merryhouse · 01/03/2022 21:43

I also live near Durham, and if I say going to town I mean Durham. I wasn't brought up here, though Grin

RosiePosieDozy · 01/03/2022 21:43

Going into town means the local town centre where I live.

I actually remember this exact question from my year 5 teacher. One of my friends said she was going into town and the teacher asked where, what does that mean? Grin

I think it just means the nearest shops. If you live in a town, it's the town centre. If the city shops are nearer to you, then it's the city centre.
