They've cut our tree!

We have a twisty willow at the bottom of the garden. I love it. Had it topped a couple of years ago - cost £££ but looking good. It overhang/ overhung next doors garden. Neighbours moved in a while ago - we've only spoken briefly but all pleasant enough.

I've just noticed that half the tree has been cut off. Tree looks ridiculously lop sided. Why onearth didn't they speak to us? I know they have a right to cut off anything which overhangs, but who not just warn us?? I feel really sad. Poor bloody tree!! Don't know when it was done, I've been working from home and never saw anything? They must have waited until we were all out? Aibu for being a bit annoyed?

There are bigger things in this world than chopping some branches off a tree. Get a bloody grip. Christ on a bike.

So what if there are bigger things in the world? Aren't you capable of having more than one thought in your head and caring for more than one thing?

And get a grip? Christ on a bike? Did all the other cliche MN expressions get sawn away from your vocabulary?

buckeejit · 01/03/2022 18:39

@FantasticFebruary thanks, got my grip! 🤣

Yes I do have a small amount of AstroTurf in my garden - it's great for where there's a lot of play equipment & difficult to cut grass in that area.

I also have some large areas of lawn & just done a rough count & have circa 33 trees in my garden with many many other plants & shrubs. One of the first things I would say about myself is that I love trees, (strange to most). It doesn't mean that I think every bloody tree on the planet shouldn't be pruned.

curlymom · 01/03/2022 18:39

YABU
You planted too close to boundary with no thought for neighbours .
My neighbour is worse. She has a line of leylandii overhanging and comes round screaming and shouting if we dare to touch them.
I would say you are lucky they paid to have the tree reduced. It costs so much to get a tree surgeon to do it

Don't continue to be ridiculous. You're saying the ops neighbours deserve to go hell for chopping some branches off a tree that will grow back. So yes. Get a grip.

Anyone who deliberately plants a fucking tree next to someone’s fences is an arse

Benjispruce5 · 01/03/2022 18:44

@AllThingsServeTheBeam so why are you belittling her feelings?

Emilyontmoor · 01/03/2022 18:45

Benji I knew there would be someone…. I don’t think I am the awful neighbour putting their neighbours gardens into the shade with self seeded sycamores and elders 100 foot high (close enough to threaten our foundations). I have had to change all the planting,) They have also not replaced the fence that is their responsibility, As I say they don’t care enough to notice, and certainly don’t clean it up.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/03/2022 18:45
@AllThingsServeTheBeam so why are you belittling her feelings?
Damming someone to hell? I'll carry on belittling those feelings for chopping some overhanging braches. Maybe if she was on about Putin.

Benjispruce5 · 01/03/2022 18:45

For gawd’s sake, I think @ChardonnaysPetDragon was being amusing with her hell comment. If you have no humour, you need to get a grip yourself!!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/03/2022 18:46

I know what I'm saying. I'll say what I want to say. What are you, the thread police?

Riiight ok. I have plenty my duck. You carry on with your day now. I'm sure they can stick up for themselves.
Benjispruce5 · 01/03/2022 18:47

@Emilyontmoor if I trim overhanging branches I deal with the waste myself not chick them over someone’s fence when you have no idea what is happening on the other side. Rude!

Benjispruce5 · 01/03/2022 18:48

@AllThingsServeTheBeam what’s that duck?

I think I'm losing any sense of humour as well here. Christ on a bike indeed.
@AllThingsServeTheBeam what’s that duck?
Are you ok? Like really?

Benjispruce5 · 01/03/2022 18:49

Yeah I’m fine duck, you?

godmum56 · 01/03/2022 18:50
@godmum56 but what actual harm was it doing? That's what I can't get to grips with! Just because it's in the air above their garden it doesn't mean they have to rush out with a chain saw because they are entitled to, just because they are entitled to. I honestly can't understand why they had a problem with it. It must look far far worse than before they bodgingly hacked it.
you are not them. The "what actual harm" argument is not relevant.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/03/2022 18:50

Thank God for that @ChardonnaysPetDragon! It will be a blessing to the world if that's your sense of humour

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/03/2022 18:50

@Benjispruce5

Fucking fantastic thanks

sorry but if they own the fence, they don't have to replace it unless there is a covenant on the house saying that it must be fenced. If the fence is damaged and it causes injury or damamge then they may be liable but fence owners don't have to replace fences unless, as i said, there is a covenant.
RedBonnet · 01/03/2022 18:53

I'd always talk to my neighbours first, hoping that they'd offer to do it for me. But if they didn't offer, or said I shouldn't do it, I would do it anyway as per the law.

I have a buddleia which can go mad and overhang my neighbours, but I keep it under control. I haven't asked, but I assume that they don't want it left unpruned.

I have a vine on my side of the fence and I can't reach the other side. My (other) neighbour likes it, but if she didn't I have already told her to trim it as she sees fit. Or I will go in her garden and do it with her permission.

It's always better to discuss all this with neighbours first. Whatever happened to manners?

KeepingAnOpenMind · 01/03/2022 18:53

@MrsWinters Don’t be ridiculous. Why would a normal person object to a lovely weeping willow?

KeepingAnOpenMind · 01/03/2022 18:55

@godmum56 Learn to live with trees, they are essential to the ecosystem.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 01/03/2022 18:56

if knew it over hanged into your neighbours garden what’s did you at this point maintain the tree?

At this point you should have take steps to main your tree and not intrude into your neighbours space, why were you waiting on them to speak up before you maintained the tree Hmm
