Morning after pill vs early pregnancy

I took the morning after pill a week ago. I’d love children but my relationship is early on and so given the choice would wait. The unprotected sex we had was the day after ovulation so my fertile period. Hence taking the morning after pill.

Day 24 today. Since yesterday I have had ridiculously sore boobs, nausea and on the brink of tears constantly. I have never had PMT like this.

Is this just side effects of the morning after pill or is there a chance pregnancy symptoms may have started? I’d be over the moon even though it’s not ideal.

The MAP doesn't usually work if you've already ovulated, as the point of them is to delay ovulation.

I still got pregnant a couple years ago after taking the morning after pill and that wasn’t even during my fertile window (split condom too!) so it is possible. Like you, I was happy but it just wasn’t ideal timing very early on in a relationship. Take a test when you can.

MAP can do really weird things to your cycle.

It's primary action is to disrupt ovulation. But if ovulation does occur, there are still, secondary actions which may prevent pregnancy (changes to uterine environment reducing likelihood of implantation)

It prevents about 85% of pregnancies that wouid otherwise have been expected, and obviously can only fail in those where ovulation has occurred.

I'm afraid there's no way of knowing what might be going on with you.

Test at 14 days after the at risk intercourse (first day a test might be accurate) and if negative, repeat after 5-7 days (to allow for the in vivo sperm life)

The leaflet said it works by delaying ovulation and also stopping implantation…..

It’s impossible to say as MAP, regular PMS and early pregnancy can all have same symptoms.

You can start testing for pregnancy if you’re more than 7 days past ovulation.

When I took MAP once I’ve experienced some extreme PMS (plus bloating
, sore boobs, extreme fatigue etc) but my test came back negative so that put my mind at ease, and then my period arrived shortly after (though later than expected).

The leaflet said it works by delaying ovulation and also stopping implantation…..
Yes, it should also make the uterine lining thinner so it’s harder to implant for the potentially fertilised egg.

The month I took map my pms was horrific as was my period so hopefully its just that for yourself

Namechangedfeb22 · 01/03/2022 12:16

Ok, so could still just be the MAP effects

I got pregnant on the MAP. It does not work if you have ovulated. Take a pregnancy test to be sure then you can plan next steps.

scaevola · 01/03/2022 13:15

It does not work if you have ovulated

It can work if you have ovulated, owing to secondary actions. But it might not.

Think about it - it can by definition only fail if you do ovulate

I’d be delight if I was pregnant so I’m not worried. It’s not ideal but it would be a welcome and loved addition to my life

I still got pregnant after the MAP
It's very common

Hmm... I don't trust it. My morning after pill toddler is currently at the childminder!
Luckily for us, we were TTC previously, but had decided to stop due to recurrent MMCs and unable to cope with another loss. Hence the MAP. But our little whirlwind had other plans Shock
