Door cam and lodger

ENorthLincs · 01/03/2022 01:28

I’ve got a lodger and he’s fine generally.

However we’ve got a situation recently whereby he’s being annoying.

I got a door cam for security of my car and that’s about all.

I didn’t realise how intrusive they actually are. Records of when the other person comes home, and ability to check on visitors.

When it was installed I gave him access and he said “have a good day” on the door cam whilst I was leaving for work. Yeah kinda funny but also a bit intrusive.

Guy came to pick up an Marketplace item and was early…. So he rang the doorbell. Lodger must have answered it before me as I thought I was talking to the guy and said I would be home in five. I then get calls from my lodger (which I ignored) and he messaged me saying the guy had travelled 30 miles etc and was annoyed etc. The lodger was away on a stag do and I assume wasn’t expecting a parcel etc.

He’s also into his technology and I know he looks at the camera as he mentions the images (such as me in a dressing gown going to the car or his bald patch).

Amazon have always had no issues with parcels - im often home etc.

Would I be unreasonable to revoke access and also not allow him access to the cctv around the front/garden? I don’t intend to download the app to watch the house cctv because I really don’t care what happens when I’m not at home.

He also kinda demanded he be allowed to try and fix it. It wasn’t working so the guy came to replace the unit and I used a new account to sign up. I told lodger it wasn’t working and he demanded he have a go. I literally said no three times.

Yeah OP I really don't see what's creepy here. He assumes as you share a household, he is entitled to be involved in this kind of thing. I don't think it's that weird. But maybe I'm thinking about him from a friend / flat mate angle who you share a household with.

I've never had a lodger or been a lodger and I'm not really sure exactly what the difference is between a lodger and a house mate ? Is it because you own the house and he pays you rent that he's a lodger ?

I think his behaviour is not creepy at all though. But if it creeps you out, then something about him must creep you out and therefore maybe you should reconsider if you want to share your home with this man ? Maybe it's your gut telling you it's not right. Because what he's actually done, isn't weird.

He's a techie and wants to help make things work in his household. Would you be creeped out if he tried to fix the toaster ? As to him insisting, even after you said don't fix it, maybe he thought you were being polite and he just really wanted to help out. He probably has no idea that you think he should have no involvement in house stuff.

Anyway, maybe examine if this is the right arrangement for you.

I am surprised at the results, I don’t see how it can be reasonable for you to install this and have the ability to spy on him but not the other way around. If you don’t like it, then get rid, as far as I can see he is making use of a device you installed at the home.

@londonrach

Slightly worried if I was the lodger and landlord had cameras watching my ever move. I'd give notice and leave. There was a case in court recently re the ring doorbell and privacy. Yabu. Why do you want to watch your lodger?
LOL... seriously. She doesn't want to watch her lodger. This must be a joke post just to provoke.
Porcupineintherough · 01/03/2022 07:55

@ineedsun

So you’re allowed to watch him on the camera but not vice versa?
This.
dworky · 01/03/2022 08:06

Oh god, revoke access - he's already overstepped by a furlong.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/03/2022 08:19
I''m concerned by your lodger. YANBU - it sounds like he's using the system to spy on you. I'd definitely revoke access and possibly get a new lodger, preferably one who understands boundaries and the word 'no.'

If the camera's only for your car, why don't you get a dashcam with 'Parking Mode' instead of a door cam? www.halfords.com/technology/buying-guides/dash-cam-buying-guide.html
A dash cam with Parking Mode will only operate if the car is hit. It won't show anyone snooping around your car. The camera is fixed pointing forwards (although you can have a rear facing camera too).

If they steal the car they get the camera free!

TaysideTeuchter · 01/03/2022 19:09

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

Parking Mode usually includes motion detection, so you don't actually have to suffer an impact in order for it to work: carcamwarehouse.com/camera_motion_detection.html

Also, some models save footage directly to an online cloud (so you can view it on your phone/ipad etc) : gogirl.co.uk/news-and-advice/how-view-dashcam-footage/

They might steal your car and take your dashcam - but you'll have footage of them taking it Wink

LuaDipa · 01/03/2022 19:24

I don’t think yabu op. You installing the cameras to protect your property, but he is viewing the footage when there is no need.

Personally I don’t think there is any issue with cctv. It simply serves as a deterrent to protect your home and property. We live rurally so we aren’t ‘spying’ on anyone, but we have the opportunity to look back at footage if anything happens to be amiss. We have only needed to do so once - to see which neighbour to thank for bringing our bin in when we were on holiday.

I would be very uncomfortable if my own dh was constantly reviewing the footage and commenting on my actions, let alone a lodger. It is definitely strange, but only you know if it’s creepy or he just has too much time on his hands.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/03/2022 19:46

@taysideteucher
Ah, ours doesn't do all that! It (Nextbase) only records if there is an impact, is forward facing and records to the internal memory card. But we do have a tracker fitted to the car.

All this money wasted on security devices when if JudgeJeffries was still around we could all save a lot of money and sleep easily at night...

"Bring back the Birch" as my old Granny used to say (although she was into S & M, so the vicar said at her funeral Shock)
I have always wondered how he knew that? Hmm

Yep. No way would I stay somewhere where the landlord had a camera that recorded my comings and goings. Now THAT creeps me out.
saraclara · 01/03/2022 20:02

LOL... seriously. She doesn't want to watch her lodger.

This is the sort of crap that people come out with every time cameras are mentioned.
Maybe OP doesn't, but the lodger doesn't know that. It's perfectly obvious that anyone who actually DO spy on visitors or people feeding their cats would say the same thing with wide-eyed innocence.

The person who is being filmed has no control over whether the footage is watched or not, and for what purpose. It's therefore an invasion of their privacy.
