To not do overtime?

I work 41/42 hours over 5 days which are my actual working hours and doesn't include my lunch breaks.
I think this is the absolute most I should be doing, I've previously had roles where 50/60 hour weeks were expected and never again, it's just not worth barely having any free time and working 6 day weeks.

Anyway I work in a childcare setting but I'm through an agency rather than directly employed. They are often understaffed which is likely common in a lot of similar settings, and I don't mind staying an extra 5-10 minutes but I am certainly not staying an extra 1-2 hours except in very exceptional circumstances.

Some of the permanent staff do this overtime a few times a week and end up doing 50 hour weeks.
I just tell them I cannot stay as I have other commitments. I had a previous care role where I'd get constant calls 'Can you just do a few extra lunch/tea visits for us' , 'Can you do the bed visits for us' 'Can you finish at 6 instead of 3'.

I used to say yes a lot and now I'm much firmer at work. Need to think of my work life balance, so many places rely and run on the goodwill of staff doing overtime and it's wrong.

YANBU. It's not your fault if they're poorly organised. Just do your standard hours unless you want the extra money or flexibility that might come from doing overtime.

Nope. Work your contracted hours and then go without a backward glance. If you give an inch, they'll take a mile.

Did you post about this before? You need to maintain your boundaries. Do any extra hours get logged?

BobHadBitchTits · 28/02/2022 21:20

Have you recently left that care role?
