Brush teeth before or after breakfast?

Sophiebrown85 · 27/02/2022 14:01

Hey everyone.

I brush my teeth after breakfast, but was told my DD has Enamel dysplasia and brushing teeth after breakfast has not helped her case. She says to brush teeth before breakfast and I understand that now and the science behind it.

But was wondering, how many of you brush before or after and why?

I always do it after, and tried to do it before but I just cannot stand the minty taste with marmlade on my toast. Taught my DD the same way whos 13 and how do we get rid of this habit.

After breakfast but always allow 30 mins minimum

PrincessPaws · 27/02/2022 17:51

After. I know it's better to do it before but I don't want to eat when I have minty fresh breath!

BurbageBrook · 27/02/2022 17:52

After, I love my toast and morning coffee straight away and a minty taste would ruin it. Dentist says my teeth are fine so I have no motivation to switch!

TimeToMakeACupofTea · 27/02/2022 17:53

Before, as soon as I get up.

SpiceRat · 27/02/2022 18:00

I do both because my mouth feels manky after breakfast and a coffee, but I know you’re supposed to wait like 30 mins or so after eating because of damage to enamel. My teeth are fucked too.

AmberGer · 27/02/2022 18:02

I get up
Go to the toilet
Drink a pint of water
Brush my teeth
Have a shower
Get dressed
Then have my breakfast, it doesn't taste funny.

TooManyPJs · 27/02/2022 18:07

Either/or. Not very good with routine (ADHD) so tbh I just try to manage to brush twice a day. I can't really time it. I also get up at wildly different times everyday and may or may not have breakfast.

Georgyporky · 27/02/2022 18:13

I brush last thing at night, so can't see the point of brushing before anything other than water has passed my lips.
Always a gap before brushing after breakfast though.

Hankunamatata · 27/02/2022 18:15

Before as I get up, brush teeth then wash or shower then get dressed.

stuntbubbles · 27/02/2022 18:17

Before since I was a small, and I’m bringing up DD as a before as well.

My teeth are crooked as fuck but very healthy, still have some milk teeth and I’m 41 Grin

RavenclawsRoar · 27/02/2022 18:18

Before. Dentist told me to always brush before. And leave 30 minutes after vomiting before brushing (relevant because I've had 3 dc and had horrible morning sickness each time).

SquigglePigs · 27/02/2022 18:22

I brush as soon as I get up but I don't eat breakfast for at least an hour so I don't have the toothpaste taste issue.

HiJenny35 · 27/02/2022 18:26

Always first, there's a type of bacteria between the teeth and gums that builds overnight and if it travels to the blood stream is a factor in heart disease so the recommendation is to always brush away as soon as you get up. And not to eat first as the food helps it move into the system.

mizzo · 27/02/2022 19:25

I brush pretty much first thing, so do the children, by the time they're finished faffing around getting washed and dressed the toothpaste taste has worn off for them and I don't eat until about 11.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 27/02/2022 19:41

How can you eat breakfast with a manky overnight mouth? Seriously! Brush your teeth when you get up.

Do you actually get up and go downstairs and eat breakfast with a manky overnight mouth?

Lulu1919 · 27/02/2022 19:44

I've been told before by my dentist
Then if I have breakfast before I leave home I'll use a mouthwash to freshen

betwixtlives · 27/02/2022 19:46

What was wrong with the answers on your identical thread in chat?

Bananarice · 27/02/2022 19:59

I brush my teeth before breakfast. That is the first thing you do after getting of the bed. Go toilet, do your business and then brush your teeth. I learnt that from dm, who got cross if you left the toilet without brushing your teeth first. Unless someone else has a toilet emergency and even then you emerged with a toothbrush in your hand.

Doublechins · 27/02/2022 20:30

Before and I make the DC do there's before. Only because we can grab some breakfast on the way out of the door if we're running late but we can't leave without brushing our teeth

intwrferingma · 27/02/2022 20:32

Before! On the advice of my dentist friend. Can always swill with mouthwash after breakfast.

TheTeenageYears · 28/02/2022 00:09

After breakfast but I am aware this is actually wrong. I do try and leave it an hour after eating or drinking to brush though.

I was probably 40 when told by a Dr's wife that brushing before breakfast is best. I find it staggering that this has never been a well publicised thing with public health announcements etc and in all the years of going to the dentist and being asked if I floss regularly, never having a dentist mention brushing as soon as you get up is a huge oversight I think.

PinkSyCo · 28/02/2022 06:01

I never know what to do for the best, so I just skip breakfast.
