To not want to fly whilst all this war is going on?

DH and I normally go away every year abroad - normally to USA for road trips.

The year before Covid started we decided not to go away and instead save up for a big USA trip the year after. Then obviously Covid happened 😂 so we haven't been abroad for over 3 years (first world problems, I know).
We decided we’d go to USA later this year now that covid is being treated like flu so to speak.

Then Putin happened. Now I don’t particularly want to fly whilst all this is going on. I’m scared of flying at the best of times but now Russia is literally on the warpath I just don’t want to go anywhere. DH thinks I’m being ridiculous and I know I probably am but I’d just rather stay in the UK at the minute.

AIBU to cancel yet another holiday?

No I would wait for things to stabilise before I went on holiday. It seems odd to holiday at the moment.

@DazedandConcerned

I’m off to Egypt next week and Greece in august. No plans to cancel. You’ll be fine going to the USA. More danger from the local population and their guns than Putin.
Reminds me of the time we stayed in an airB&B in Utah, it was a big house (old Sheriff’s house) with 3 bedrooms and we were sharing with an American couple from Arizona (sharing the house, not the bedroom 😂). We got on really well with them, they were lovely - very religious, didn’t drink and both had professional careers. One night we decided to have a BBQ together … during which we ran out of charcoal and the woman said she’d pop to the store and get some as she needed something else too. Her husband casually handed over the car keys and a gun before telling her to also pick up some toothpaste.

DH and I were speechless. I don’t know who was more shocked, us at the thought of a gun in the house or them at the thought of us travelling without one.

Were you never worried with other wars? Iraq? Afghanistan? Syria?

It not then, why now?

SpilltheTea · 27/02/2022 10:17

So the other wars didn't put you off then?

mooselooseaboothoose · 27/02/2022 10:20

I was in Singapore en route to London when the news broke the invasion has started. We had no choice but to board the plane which was redirected to avoid the war. They do their best to keep everyone safe.

Angelswithflirtyfaces · 27/02/2022 10:21

Its a personal choice, if you would feel that nervous would you really enjoy this holiday anyway?
If anything got really really bad a lot of flights might be cancelled anyway. Lets hope it doesnt come to that. Covid has disrupted travel as it is.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 27/02/2022 10:22

I had to fly a lot for work during the first Gulf War. The planes were mostly empty a lot of the time. Imagine a Boeing 747 with only 5 people on it. The passengers certainly had sterling service from the cabin crew.

I don't like flying particularly; but I was surprised by just how very many people had clearly been put off travelling on a plane. (I seem to recall an issue with Sylvester Stallone not flying?)

I suppose what I'm trying to say is, a lot of people get spooked about flying in times of war, because of our fears about terrorism. If it means you'll dread your holiday, I would question whether it's worth it. Go for a nice eco-cruise instead or something.

@ShittyFingers that’s America y’all. I’m Canadian originally so I’m well acquainted with their quirks. My dad used to golf with business associates who were armed on the golf course. Guess you could blow the ball away when you had a bad lie.

But go away. Don’t sweat it. More likely to be hit by a bus crossing the road.

I understand OP. I am very anxious about someone who is going travelling for 2m in the next week or so and no one else seems remotely concerned. It is slightly the flights but more them being so far away in uncertain times, which might apply less in your situation where you and your dh will be together. Perhaps hold off booking or book with easy cancellation so it doesn't make you too anxious.
