To book a holiday to Turkey?

Possible not so much of an AIBU, but more of is this a good idea? Over the last few weeks have been looking at holiday options, and have decided that we want to go to the Antalya area of Turkey in April.

In light of what's happening in Ukraine, I am wondering if we should reconsider? I'm not easily worried, but am wondering if this would be an unnecessary 'risk' taking the children somewhere that is so close to these troubles.

AIBU - YES - Not a good idea to plan travel this area, go to Spain instead!
AIBU - No - Go ahead and book the holiday !

Shouldn't think Putin concerns himself much with Turkey. It's more the Syrian conflict and general existing instability in the region including domestic terrorism and state crackdowns you'd be affected by there. Although probably not in an AI resort you get bussed in and out of privately.

I'm off to Prague in may. Living on the fucking edge

SnowyPetals · 26/02/2022 18:44

Turkey is a long way from the conflict, both physically and politically. You don't need to fly over Ukranian airspace to get there either.

IsDaveThere · 26/02/2022 19:08

Turkey is not really close to Ukraine so I am not too sure what you are worried about Hmm. Syria is a lot closer!

I am going to Turkey in May and am not too worried, I don't see it as any different than holidaying anywhere else in Europe tbh.

It's ok, Putin is mates with Erdogan so he won't invade Turkey!!

Coulddowithanap · 26/02/2022 19:16

I'd go to Turkey. Antalya is a lovely area.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 26/02/2022 19:19

It's not that near to Ukraine, but the flights are around 5 hours, as opposed to 2 hours for Spain. Hence door to door would be around 10 hours... that's a long time travelling, especially with children. For that reason alone I would go to Spain, or perhaps Corfu.

shivermetimbers77 · 26/02/2022 19:24

Couldn’t work out the voting but I said YANBU to go to Turkey.. hope that was the right way around! Turkey is a huge country and the south western resorts are very safe and far away from any political trouble in Ukraine or Syria. We will also be going there this year.

Sausagis · 26/02/2022 19:25

I'm booked already to Antalya in April. Fingers crossed!

So are we 🤞

If anyone reads this and has been before, I'd love suggestions of things to do if we get bored around the hotel (1 teen, 1 tween). I've thought about the Duden waterfalls, the Aspendos theatre looks good if I can get there without hiring a car, and the Old Town.

Didioverstep · 26/02/2022 20:15

@Sausagis don't stay in the hotel! I haven't been to antalya. But have family by the Syrian border. Turkey is full of so many sites to see. A quick Google will give you loads of info based on where your hotel is

Confused plenty of people travel much further with children. Given the OP didn't ask whether we thought she could cope on a 5 hour flight I'm not sure what relevance your answer, and vote, had to the thread.
WandaThePanda · 26/02/2022 20:39

Not because of the Ukraine but because Turkey is a shitty country.

What an absolute load of bollocks!

TheHoptimist · 26/02/2022 20:42

Lots of Russians on holiday in turkey usually

narisha99 · 26/02/2022 20:49

Very happy with the flights times and the country Wink

Thanks all that's reassuring, I'm not great with politics and foreign affairs' so just needed a sanity it wasn't a crazy thing to be doing!

Well we’ve already booked Antalya for April, and I’m not backing out now! Stupidly I think I had the option to buy “FCO advises against foreign travel cover” blah blah blah, when I got my insurance but I didn’t. Maybe I can add it on…… either way, maybe I’ll see you there! Honestly though if Putin steps one toe into Turkey, that’s when we’ll know things will have got really shitty for all of Europe, holidays notwithstanding. Just praying for peace is all we can do at this point.

Good to hear! We’ve booked to go here in April 🤞
MushroomHunter · 26/02/2022 21:25

We have booked for June. Never been before but looking forward to it.

hotelhelp · 27/02/2022 11:28

@hummf you lucky thing!! I have nothing to compare it to in Turkey and it is wasn't as big and wow as some hotels we saw but we absolutely loved every minute there.

MrsTJOsbornee · 27/02/2022 13:18

@hummf as do we!

ReadtheFT · 27/02/2022 13:21

I'd go, but keep in mind that April is Ramadan, I'm sure it wont affect hotel/resort but I'd check if it changes anything else outside of that
