How should I wash my hair?

Ok this is something else I can’t seem to do!

My hair was bleached and heat damaged quite badly. It goes into curls when it dries naturally, but when I blowdry it it’s not curly, it’s more like a frizzy and textured bush of candyfloss! It’s always been like this but obviously the heat and bleach has worsened it.

I’ve had a keratin treatment and a haircut and it feels in much better condition now and I want to look after it as best as I can.

When the hairdresser washed it (before the keratin), it was so smooth and non frizzy! Usually when I wash it I end up with a tangled mess. I’ve tried conditioner, oil, brushing (and even straightening) it before I wash it, no matter what it still ends up like a frizzy, crunchy, tangled bush after I shampoo it. It makes it impossible to dry it and I end up with a gigantic mass of tangled hair.

Soooo, I know I’ll never be as good as the hairdresser, but HOW do they wash it so smoothly? Does anyone have any tips or knowledge?

ThanksSmile

More expensive hair products worked for me.

Never brush wet hair - only comb it.

How are you shampooing it? Google the motions - I massage my scalp with my finger tips, and move my hands about lots (lift them out of the hair and put them in a new spot, not just pushing it all around without lifting up my hands). I also have a scalp massager I use occasionally, it's ace! Highly recommend olaplex and redken for good quality shampoos that can help.

Mine used to be over bleached and felt like straw when washed. These were things that helped me, along with a really good cut.

Brush your hair before you get in the shower.
Good quality shampoo and conditioner (your hairdresser will sell you some; it will seem extortionate but mine has been a good investment)
Don't rub rub rub; massage the shampoo in and rinse out, then take your time getting the conditioner through the ends.
Get a microfibre type hair turban to put it in when you get out of the shower and squeeze it dry, don't rub it. You can also use an old t-shirt instead of a towel I believe; it's gentler on the hair or so I've heard.
Buy a wet brush - mine made an ENORMOUS difference to the 15 minutes I used to spend detangling the knotted mass my hair had become. I used some leave in conditioner/kids detangler spray too when it got too bad.
When you dry your hair, point the hairdryer down the lengths of your hair so you're keeping the cuticles all going in the same direction.
Regular deep conditioning and trims.

Not a hairdresser but this is what I do and my hair is in much better condition now.

Can you ask your hairdresser for advice? Do you use shampoo, conditioner and then smooth some oil through, combing from the bottom upwards? I agree you need quality products too.

Good shampoo and conditioner, and leave-in keratin spray (I got some Keratin 10 Leave-in Miracle) plus rinsing with cooler water to seal the hair which stops it getting frizzy. That's helped my super frizzy hair, plus not washing too often.

housemaus · 25/02/2022 22:56

Oh yes, agreed to the microfibre towel!

Faevern · 25/02/2022 22:56

Oh yes @Smileatthesmallthings good advice about not rubbing wet or dry. My hairdresser told me you really only need to massage the shampoo into your scalp, then smooth it down the rest of your hair.

My hairdressers uses softened water. It makes my hair noticeably softer and shinier. I think a lot of them do and just don't tell us.

To counteract the effect of hard water I sometimes use a homemade vinegar rinse, or Wonder Water (L'Oréal).

I have hair that sounds similar to yours, albeit I have never dyed or bleached it. It naturally dries very frizzy, with a few undefined curls.

I invested in a Dyson hairdryer and a good brush. Watched a few videos on YouTube and I’ve blowdried it nearly every 2-3 days for the last 2 years or so. My hair looks so much better and is very healthy. No heat damage at all. It is also very smooth. Only takes about 10-15 minutes to blow dry, whereas with regular hairdryers it would take me about 45 minutes.

If you rumple it with a towel to dry, that makes frizz. Get a microfiber towel to dry your hair. It's like a fiver.

Hair products and good brushes .

My hairdresser recommended I use a tangle teaser to brush through my conditioner in the shower, then rinse.
