To boycote football teams and businesses owned by Oligarchs

There is little we can do as individuals to show our disgust at the invasion of the Ukraine. However, we can make an impression but choosing not to support businesses financially that are owned by Oligarchs. Football teams being the main group that's springs to mind.

We can boycote by reducing footfall and refusing season tickets etc.

@CatDogMonkeyPOW

Instead of pointless boycotting ideas, we should all be writing to our MPs to demand that the government strip the assets of the Russian oligarchs held in the UK, including the millions of pounds worth of property in London. We should also demand that these figures and their families have their visas revoked. No more educating their children in our elite schools.

The sanctions announced yesterday were an improvement from the day before, but still pathetically weak. We need to make the UK a hostile place for Putin's supporters, else we may as well be fighting alongside the Russians for all the good our measures will make.

Agreed

You're a Fulham fan aren't you OP? Admit it!

@MorningStarling

I suppose we could all refuse to vote Labour in future elections, that would be a symbolic boycott that might make Starmer et al take notice. Putin seems to want to return to the glory days of the CCCP, Labour have been in bed with communism for the majority of their history, it's a stain they can't wash away.

I'm not sure boycotting football clubs would do much good. Chelsea for example is a vanity project for its owner, a plaything. It's not there to be profitable. Whether or not fans turn up is largely irrelevant.

We could all boycott gas and electricity because some of that comes from Russia. But that would be inconvenient and wouldn't do much good because other people would just buy it.

The thing is, if you boycott things owned by Russians (who individually may not be for the invasion) then surely you should boycott anything connected with China too, most of Asia really. And the Middle East. And most of the Americas. And Africa. And Europe. And Scotland. Or do you only care about atrocities that are regularly on your TV screen and ignore what those governments are getting up to?

Are you conveniently ignoring the millions of Russian donations to the Tories?

And the report on Russian interference in Brexit that they refused to do anything about, and the way that they've facilitated Russian money laundering billions through dodgy visas?

balalake · 25/02/2022 09:55

I think voting in May if you have elections and not voting for any party that has accepted Russian donations is a better way of expressing your support for the people of Ukraine.

Im2022 · 25/02/2022 09:59

Well good luck!
These oligarchs have basically bought the British government..there’s not much point in boycotting the small fish is there, if you don’t start a revolution and remove the clown and his minions?!

and this is why I am pissed off at our saber rattling.

its like brexit all over again, piss of the EU and then piss off everyone else whom we want to do business with.

we have been chumming up to the Russians for years, and the Chinese look what they are upto, we cant go around endlessly alternating between boot licking then threatening, we will be completely johnny no mates in no time.

and unlike Russia we are not self serficant we need what they have, and I am sure I am not alone in this country in caring more about if I freeze next winter or can afford to cook food, then which inbreed overprivileged, rich lying corrupt toff is in power.

WomanStanleyWoman · 25/02/2022 10:56

So what are the Ukrainians to do? Russian is killing their country and citizens! Not the Ukrainians fault.

I’m afraid not buying a ticket for Chelsea v Newcastle isn’t going to change that.

I doubt many on MN would be buying any sort of ticket to see Chelsea, you probably need to be somewhere else to persuade people, maybe the supporters club if there is one

RobertaFirmino · 25/02/2022 22:15

At this moment, I cannot consider boycotting Chelsea FC - we are playing them in a cup final on Sunday. I'm not letting that warmongering little dictator spoil my footy enjoyment.

Lol ! Please lay off the Vodka!

Labour actually commissioned the UKs first nuclear subs - Polaris.

and of course its Boris & the Tories and their love of all things Russian that have led us here, not least jumping into bed with Putin and doing his bidding on Brexit and it was Gove, then Boris who were hand in hand with Cummings who lived in Russia for 4 years.

Oh and lets not forget who is backing China and investment in the UK? Yep you guessed it - Boris and Tories.

Anyway, don't know about UK football but surely Russia cannot be allowed to qualify for this years world cup?

DinnoWoman · 25/02/2022 22:34

Russian money, mafia money and otherwise bent money is everywhere OP. In the housing market, utilities, sports, leisure, tech, healthcare, everywhere.

This is how the world works. If you want to boycott it you'd have to boycott capitalism and modern life itself.

Like those guys in the USA who go off grid, but even they buy guns.

(And probably shit in buckets.)

GirlInACountrySong · 25/02/2022 23:15

boycotting modern life sounds tempting right now!

TinaYouFatLard · 25/02/2022 23:28

I have a sneaking suspicion the OP is not a football fan at all. Still, it’s always good to make demands on the lower class plebs isn’t it?
