Email sign off

AIBU in thinking "best" is the most irritating email sign off there is.
It really grated on me when I read it and it feels like something is missing.
Best wishes or best regards fine but just best, I hate it ggrrrrr

I've never received an email with just "best" at the end. Could it of been an error and they missed the second word?

FloatingAlien · 25/02/2022 00:22

I find best really odd, it makes no sense!
Although the worst sign off has to be, one person who signs his emails "KR" literally took me months to decipher what it stood for, I thought it was his nickname or something 🙄

BringOnTheOtherWorlders · 25/02/2022 00:25

My co-worker uses "Best" wtf? I hate it. Makes no sense.

Best what? What is that short for? Best wishes? Best in Show? All the Best?

I have no clue.

Wedonttalkaboutrats · 25/02/2022 00:28

I always read it as a shortened ‘all the best’ but I hate it too. How bloody lazy do you have to be!

dyingofthelight · 25/02/2022 00:28

I hate to confess this, but I'm a "best"-er!

MrsDeadpool · 25/02/2022 00:29

Short for ‘best wishes’ or ‘all the best’, and reserved for those I hold in contempt, or whose email to which I am replying has really riled me. Honestly, there’s a whole hierarchy of friendliness in sign-offs.

DottyDoge · 25/02/2022 01:52

Oh come on, you know what it means. At least it's common in my company. If you're sending a quick email (that could be a text, slack, etc), it's quite common to write something like

"thanks for the document,

Best,

D"

Rather than Dear Susan, thank you sending me the report. Kind regards".

NarNooNarNoo · 25/02/2022 02:13

It really grates on me too! When my manager does it it sounds like he’s annoyed at something. When the team I line manage do it it sounds over formal and begrudging! But they all obviously seem to think it’s fine so maybe it’s just me who is reading it wrong (but don’t get me started when they start the email with just my name and no hi or anything Angry..)

I tend to use ‘best wishes’ or ‘thanks’. Someone in my company uses ‘bw’ which is pretty annoying as well!

justanotherremainer · 25/02/2022 02:16

In most cases I’m Kind regards.

Occasionally (when feeling jaunty) I’m All the Best.

When pissed off I’m Regards or Yours sincerely

I agree OP. Best is lame.

tcjotm · 25/02/2022 05:38

Best just feels so incomplete. If you want to use one word, go for thanks or cheers.

Kind regards means I’m feeling quite frosty but if you get just ‘Regards’ from me then you’re on my ‘dead to me’ list.

I prefer best wishes.

KatherineJaneway · 25/02/2022 05:46

That is odd. However I probably annoy people as I don't put my name after Kind regards or Best wishes, just K.

echt · 25/02/2022 05:49

Treat an email as you would an old-school letter, and no-one will ever be pissed off:

Yours faithfully if you don't know the name.
Yours sincerely, if you do.

Rainallnight · 25/02/2022 05:50

Oh I love best! And use it all the time. But may have to re-consider if it’s so irritating to people.

What’s an alternative, friendly, brief sign off? Kind regards is way OTT for some situations, as is best wishes.

labyrinthlaziness · 25/02/2022 05:51

You will come across as weird though Grin
Mercurial123 · 25/02/2022 05:57

Doesn't bother me. What annoys me is the greeting Dear no name just Dear

balalake · 25/02/2022 07:00

To be honest I ignore the words used in most email signatures. I'm more concerned at the content and the timeliness.

I think it's that (to me) it doesn't feel friendly.

It feels curt and cold and I always wonder if I've pissed my bosses off when they send it

I have a colleague who signs off "kindest regards", I know I'm unreasonable but it gives me the boak every time

Jonny1265 · 26/02/2022 11:17

I've more important things to care about,

Best
Jonny

Catlover77 · 27/02/2022 19:43

I’ve only known one person who used Best. I assumed it was a cultural thing, as she was not originally from the UK

PenCreed · 27/02/2022 19:50

"Kind regards" is what I use for emails when I've started with "Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms etc" - it feels slightly less formal than "yours sincerely" (my job doesn't really require formality), but not too familiar. I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses "regards" for "you're dead to me" though.

WandaThePanda · 27/02/2022 20:07

Best is fine; kind regards - or worse, regards - I cannot abide. The latter makes me inclined to think the sender is a sociopath.

SkiingIsHeaven · 27/02/2022 20:16

I worked with a guy who said ATB at the end of his messages. Had no idea what it meant for ages. Eventually worked out it was "All The Best".

Rainallnight · 27/02/2022 22:12

Still here for the alternative brief, friendly sign off…any ideas?
