I have been watching tv news on and off all day and I am in awe of the women i have seen, both LD and OG are so professional. I admire them greatly.

Yhe other thing I noticed was the Ukrainian women that have been interviewed, from government officals to women on the street are so 'together', brave and stoic. Even in the early hours these women were strong enough to have got up, done their hair and make up like usual and basically faced down a super power, I hope so much we will support them.

Lyse Doucet was on Desert Islands Discs a few weeks ago and it was a great listen. What an interesting woman!

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2022 18:22

I agree. It took me quite a while to get used to LD's voice but she and OG are amazing.

Deliberateplanning · 24/02/2022 18:23

They are both incredible women

heldinadream · 24/02/2022 18:30

And can I add in Deborah Haynes of Sky news. All of these women are incredibly impressive.
All stand on the shoulders of Kate Adie. For years and years in my childhood she was the only woman who did what she did and I was in complete awe of her.

thebabessavedme · 24/02/2022 18:54

@heldinadream, I agree with you, also adding Marie Colvins name to the role call.

TheUsualShitshow · 24/02/2022 18:58

Same. I always wanted to be a conflict photographer after watching Kate Adie when I was little.

RedToothBrush · 24/02/2022 19:01

I love them both. I have a big thing for war journalists.

LabraDabraDoo · 24/02/2022 19:01

Lyse Doucet’s Desert Island Discs was fantastic. An absolutely amazing woman who was immediately added to my fantasy dinner party table. She’s seated between Nigel Slater and Joni Mitchell.

Marie Colvin was a legend. A brave and talented woman. Her loss was tragic.

CayrolBaaaskin · 24/02/2022 19:03

Amazing women- inspirational

LabraDabraDoo · 24/02/2022 19:04

If we are doing a roll call, can I please add Christina Lamb. Her reporting for The Times is outstanding and she often foregrounds women’s experiences.

AdoraBell · 24/02/2022 19:06

Also Yogita Limare (hope I’ve spelt that last name correctly) who reported from Kabul as the Afghans tried to flee.

titchy · 24/02/2022 19:07

They are amazing aren't they.

Kendodd · 24/02/2022 19:09

Yanbu
I love the fact that neither of them seem to wear make up or pretty themselves up as women are expected. They have important information to give and can't be bothered with such trivia.

WhoppingBigBackside · 24/02/2022 19:11

Beauty comes from within

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2022 19:12

And Lindsey Hilsum. I imagine most don't have children?

supercritter · 24/02/2022 19:12

And Lindsey hilsum

AdoraBell · 24/02/2022 19:35

Limaye, I thought I’d misspelt it 🤦‍♀️Blush

Quantity5 · 24/02/2022 19:37

Amazing women. So brave and interesting and powerful.

Gardeniafleur · 24/02/2022 19:38

Yes to Christina Lamb! Incredible reporting from Afghanistan.

formalineadeline · 24/02/2022 19:39

done their hair and make up like usual

What a strange thing to celebrate or consider noteworthy. Have you stepped out of the 1950s?

So by extension, if they had woken up in response to a war starting and decided hair and make up were not important, you would have judged them?

WhoppingBigBackside · 24/02/2022 19:48

They are amazing people doing a difficult job very well and professionally. Why are we discussing whether or not they wear make-up and have no children?

Would we discuss this if it was Feargal Keane or John Simpson?

thebabessavedme · 24/02/2022 19:50

@formalineadeline, I knew there would be one! I was not being superficial, I am in awe that these women are strong enough, organised enough and so totally brave that they carried on their normal morning routine while I would proberbly being having a melt down without any idea of what to do next. They are showing strength of character, backbone and resolve.

I am old enough to have photos of my nana and great aunts looking so well dressed, so glamorous during WW2, showing an almost defiant stance in the face of fear, poverty, the loss of homes and not knowing where their children were evacuated to - to my mind women are the strongest sex.

Also was thinking the same about OG and LD last night. Amazing women.

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2022 20:00

Why are we discussing whether or not they wear make-up and have no children?

I think whether they have children is interesting. I'm sure their male equivalents are more likely to have as can leave them at home. A quick Google of Jeremy Bowen and Frank Gardner both shows that haven't had to make that choice.

zigzagzigzagz · 24/02/2022 20:09

There is a film about Marie Colvin - A Private War - if anyone is interested and hasn’t seen it.
