To tell you if you want to sell your car....

Do it sooner rather than later.

I work in the automotive retail industry, but not sales. Since Covid and lockdowns, and the loss of HGV drivers due to Brexit, the manufacturing supply chain for cars has been hit hard. This means new cars are taking months rather than weeks to get into the country or be delivered to dealerships, which has put more pressure on the used car market.

As a result, the price of used cars has skyrocketed. I recently sold my car for a bit less than 1k for what it was bought for – but that was 2.5 years ago and 20k miles less.

My used car barely changed in value.

That is INSANE when you know that the profit margin for used car sales is razor thin - £500 max profit for each used car sold. This is because they need to be cleaned, detailed, and checked before they even get on the shop floor, then of course the salesperson gets commission.

If you have a used car to get rid of, sell it sooner rather than later.

If you are in the market to buy, WAIT. The bubble will burst soon, as supply chains get re-established. By the end of the summer, used car prices will go down, I reckon. (I have no financial incentive to share this, just wanted to help anyone during this time of crazy car prices)

ByHook just needs to be booked in for one, plus the cost to a garage to actually do the MOT is less than getting it collected

ByHook0rByCrook · 23/02/2022 19:57

Thanks @SofiaSoFar - I don't see that side of things in my work, so that's helpful knowledge.

@Luhou

Looking to sell my VW Toureg. Any ideas where I will get the best price?
Carwow or motorway. They go out to dealers etc who make bids you can decline or accept, some will make a guaranteed offer rather than check it over first as long as the mileage, MOT status etc is correct.
Essentialgarage · 23/02/2022 19:58

Although of course it would have to be roadworthy

Pandai · 23/02/2022 19:59

They collect for free as well.

ABCDEF1234 · 23/02/2022 19:59

It's not just the automotive that's struggling - I work in another manufacturing industry and the issue with getting chips for products is unbelievable and unfortunately not showing signs of full resolution any time soon

Booked in, and travelling to the appointment, not elsewhere, like to a dealership. But anyway.

You're welcome. Smile

I think we're all guessing with regard to when things will get back to normal, to be honest.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 23/02/2022 20:00

Turns out my car is only worth £580 to WBAC (before they start trying to reduce the price) Blush. Might as well leave it sat on the drive.

Luhou · 23/02/2022 20:00

Thanks @Pandai

I'll take a look at those

Quornflakegirl · 23/02/2022 20:02

We got £8500 for our 6 year old Zafira with 52000 miles on the clock.

Our new Vauxhall was a 10 week wait which I don’t think was too bad.

Lanawashington · 23/02/2022 20:02

We’re really struggling with this. Ours was written off recently. Every time the local garages list a car for sale, it’s sold before it even gets to the forecourt. It’s a nightmare trying to find something!

WomblingWilma · 23/02/2022 20:10

We have a 2015 Citroen DS3 coming to the end of a PCP loan next month. Balloon payment is £2800, similar ages and higher mileages are on sale for £6k+ at present. It’s in excellent condition and just shelled out for new brakes and discs as planning to keep it for DD who’s just about to take her driving test. It had new tyres last year, recently serviced and MOTed. Zero road tax but not ULEZ compliant but she wouldn’t be driving it into London anyway!

We are now planning to sell it in the summer, putting the difference as a deposit on a newer vehicle on another PCP loan.

Good idea @ByHook0rByCrook or should we sell straightaway?

MacauliflowerCulkin · 23/02/2022 20:12

@byvirtue

We ordered a new car at the start of the month and was told it would arrive in April/May. It’s now in production and will arrive in March. Apparent lots of corporate cars are being cancelled which is bringing dates forward.
This happened to me.

Ordered my BMW in June. Was told November / December.

I had my car mid September.
PX'd my older BMW model in for an amazing price, nearly 2k more than we buy any car.

Gilly12345 · 23/02/2022 20:17

Recently we sold a 17 plate car for what we bought it for in 2018.

I have been approached by Ford asking if I want to sell my 68 plate car back to them, the £ is £1,000 more than I bought it for 18 months ago.

Sexnotgender · 23/02/2022 20:17

Put my car details on we buy any car, apparently worth £2.5k more than I paid for it just over a year ago.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 23/02/2022 20:20

Someone should tweet this thread to James O’Brien at LBC #breixit

Sexnotgender · 23/02/2022 20:27

Also looked on Arnold Clark at my car.

I bought mine just over a year ago for £16,000. Exactly the same car, same year, more miles. £21,500.

GreenClock · 23/02/2022 20:29

GreenClock
Does anyone know the best way of selling a car that is uninsured and SORNd? It’s in good nick and currently sitting on a driveway. I can’t drive it anywhere because of the absence of insurance/tax.
@Essentialgarage
To a dealer. I can drive uninsured and untaxed cars through my insurance and trade plates, or get it collected. Out of interest what is it?

Thanks Essential and everyone who replied. It’s an old Astra, lowish mileage, immaculate. MOT in place.

eldora · 23/02/2022 20:30

How much are Nissan Juke’s now? A friend paid £10k for one with 30k miles on the clock 2 years ago. Wish I’d got one then too.

wonderstuff · 23/02/2022 20:33

Only useful if you have a car you don’t need though? Cost of car hire has also gone through the roof due to a big shortage, which I guess is also putting pressure on new car delivery times.

I thought this was widely known, due to component shortage as Covid meant huge increase in demand for computers.

If your car is on its last legs get saving! Far more people will be disadvantaged by this than be able to profit I’d have thought.

Conc1 · 23/02/2022 20:39

I recommend motorway too. We have ordered a new car and sold one while prices are high (and before work was due done on it).
Just did a quick valuation on the car I bought in May. Apparently its worth £2k more than I bought it for, with an extra 10k miles on the clock.

SockFluffInTheBath · 23/02/2022 20:40

@courgettigreensadwater

We have a Volvo v40 which apparently are desirable as Volvo no longer make a 'hatchback' and used prices are high. What's the best way of selling? Auto trader?
I’ve got one as well, also looking at moving it for a bigger car, and webuyanycar have offered me silly money. Second hand prices are daft at the moment because of the lack of parts. I also work in the car industry, but on the engineering side, and we’ve been hit particularly by the semiconductor shortages but it’s all starting to ease.
RP26 · 23/02/2022 20:43

@Luhou - I’m looking for a Touareg if you’re looking to sell (depending on mileage / condition etc) 😊

Luhou · 23/02/2022 20:54

@RP26 I've messaged you Smile
