Has anyone had a "you are no longer the registered keeper of this vehicle" off the DVLA when they still have their car?

Stressful and posting for traffic.
Just got home and have a letter from the DVLA saying we are no longer the registered keeper of our vehicle.
We've only had the car 2 months, we still have our log book and the car, its saying its no longer taxed and hasn't been since the 16th of February when supposedly the change occurred, and we've paid the tax because its our car but obviously its not transferable.
On hold now with the DVLA, but what the hell is going on?
Has some scam happened that we haven't heard of before.
Stressing. Technically we've been driving without tax for 8 days.
Anyone have any ideas?

Either scam or cock up. They should have an escalation team for things like that. Most public-facing government services do.

Do you have proof that you paid the tax? Bank statement etc?
Did you get an email saying the tax was done?
Sounds like someone's cocked up their end.

TheWitchersWife · 23/02/2022 12:27

Yes, I pay a direct debit, monthly.
It came out on the 1st February, so that's easy enough to prove.

Are you phoning on a number that is definitely the DVLA’s? Probably best not to use the phone number on the letter.

Picklesandbeans · 23/02/2022 12:28

Yes we have! Rang them and it's a mistake- apparently technical glitch but you do have to ring to put it right.

TheWitchersWife · 23/02/2022 12:32

Rang them on the number from DVLAs website. So far all they have done is confirm its no longer registered to us. Now on hold again.

Sounds like syou've been a victim of fraud (or someone else has been) - maybe a fraudster has "sold" your car online to someone else? Not sure how that would work if you have hold of the log book, though?

It reminds me of that news item recently, some guy had his house sold out from under him while he was living in a different part of the country - his neighbours contacted him because they saw people in his house, and it turned out they'd bought it from someone else.

Picklesandbeans · 23/02/2022 12:40

@TheWitchersWife dont automatically think its fraud, as we have had this 2 weeks ago and lady on phone told us a batch had been issued with these letters by accident.

TheWitchersWife · 23/02/2022 12:51

Man on the phone says he can see an old log book has been sent in with new keeper details.
I thought the whole point of having up to date, dated and numbered logbooks is so this couldn't happen.
I'm not sure what they hope to gain from it as we have the car, and key, it's insured in our names and conversations of us arranging to come and view and then buy the car.
DVLA says they will sort it out and have opened a case and they'll be in touch.

What they’ve gained is a fake “identity” for a stolen car. It’s not your car they’re after. Just the cover of a fake registration, just for long enough for their purposes, which is probably to sell the stolen car.
