Watched it tonight.

AIBU to think that Diana only went back to David because they were childhood sweethearts (ie familiarity) but actually she should have gone with Robert Redford’s character because actually they are more suited?

If a man buys you from your husband. Neither man is the man for you.

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 23/02/2022 04:54

No, she went back to David because she knew she was the only one for David but to John she was just one of many.

phishy · 23/02/2022 04:55

I’m not sure, but it hasn’t aged very well, very cringe-worthy to watch.

WheresTheJustice2 · 23/02/2022 05:19

No, she went back to David because she knew she was the only one for David but to John she was just one of many.

Not at all! You’ve missed the crucial point which is that John knew she was special to him enough that he felt sorry for interfering in Diana and David’s marriage. David was broken and lost without Diana. But Diana was already moving on with a man more compatible with her and wanted a divorce from David.

I reckon had Diana and John had enough time to really get to know each other they would have been happy together.

No.... I have not missed the point at all.

I know that's what John was doing when he invented the 'Million Dollar Club but Diana wasn't to know that (not at first) but that wasn't your question.

Diana knew her and John weren't compatible as in the end she knew love not money was her motivation and returned to David.

sandgrown · 23/02/2022 05:42

I never understood how she would leave a good looking millionaire for a decidedly ordinary husband!

WheresTheJustice2 · 23/02/2022 14:49

Also it was Diana who got them into financial trouble in the first place because she was ambitious for a better lifestyle.

David seemed content living their modest life, I mean as a skilled architect he could have got himself a decent job but he seemed to completely lack drive whereas Diana had more of an opportunistic streak. That’s what John saw in her.

I bet when she went back to David she got fed up with him having had a taste for life with a successful man.

jamandmarmaladeoncrumpets · 23/02/2022 15:26

Define successful?

WheresTheJustice2 · 23/02/2022 15:36

David is a loser. The only thing he’s got worthwhile in his life is his teenage sweetheart who he let another man sleep with to get him out of financial trouble.

To me success is happiness. Money can't buy happiness.

In what way is David a loser?

I just said why. David has nothing going for him except for Diana.

Diana could have been happy with John. But her loyalty to David and knowing that he was broken without her made her go back to him.

David truly loved Diana. With or without her, he loved her.

No he was an architect. He had a lovely creative job and taught too. They had fun before they met John. David wasn't shallow.

All John had was money, someone else's wife and ultimately lonliness.

WheresTheJustice2 · 23/02/2022 22:10

No, he didn’t have a good job. He got a teaching job after Diana left him but whilst they were together she appears to have been very much the breadwinner.

She had a lot more drive and ambition, and that’s where she and John understood each other.

David is a sweet but sluggish partner. As I said before, I bet once she went back to him, she thought more than once whether she made the right decision.

Grin me too!

David did have an interesting job and was a laugh. He wasn't just wasn't money orientated. I think success gets confused with money or earning power.

It's not all about money. It's about love and that, to me imho, was the message of the story. ''The love of money is the root of all evil''

Diana realised that there is only so much that money can buy.

I guess we all have our different take on this. Money is important but it's not the measure of success. It took me years to realise that.

Whenever I watch this film I wonder how Diana so easily moved on with John after her relationship with David broke down. They spent one night together for goodness sake. It was a business arrangement.

I believe John was mesmerised by Diana's obvious beauty which in my opinion cannot be compared to the deep rooted love David had for her.

WheresTheJustice2 · 24/02/2022 01:12

I think if you haven’t experienced a relationship and life with a highly successful and solvent person, it’s difficult to understand how intoxicating it is.

I still stand by thinking Diana would definitely have had her moments wondering if she did the right thing going back to David. Maybe the reality was that she had outgrown him.

WheresTheJustice2 · 24/02/2022 01:15

I genuinely believe Diana and John had a connection that could have grown into something beyond what she had with David.

It was pretty cringe-worthy when it came out in 1993, especially as it was with Robert Redford who didn't have that sort of reputation, always played the good guy

I have. I had a relationship with a multi-millionaire. He took me on vacays in his jet. When we weren’t on his jet, we were on his helicopter. He had no qualms about correcting what he thought needed “correcting” in my speech and behaviour. He had no qualms in critising my wardrobe and hairstyle. He sucked in bed - his dick was teensy tiny. All in all, he was an arsehole. It isn’t all about the lifestyle - it’s about heart. If you don’t have heart, you don’t have anything. No amount of money will fill that void.

exactly!

Besides they'd have had to rename the film: Half Decent Proposal
