AIBU to ask if anyone else has had problems with their eyes since getting the covid jab?

I have had three covid jabs, first second and booster. I passed out at the booster jab which was moderna. Thought it was just one of those things. Then a few days later I experienced severe eye pain. Went to the eye clinic they diagnosed iritis, got drops etc, it got a bit better but recurred, now have a diagnosis of iritis and recurrent corneal erosion it is very painful. Am awaiting follow up appointment but in the meantime a friend's daughter has been diagnosed with iritis and apparently her doctor said to her that people are developing iritis off the back of covid jabs. Is this a thing??! It's a really rare condition and it's weird we both have it like from nought to fifty bam there you are sight endangering condition from nowhere. My consultant appointment isn't till later this month so can't discuss with anyone in the meantime.

I have a chronic eye problem in both eyes which has worsened since I got my booster. I'm under the eye hospital. I've been taking an anti histamine which is currently helping. I had to have steroid and antibiotic ointment just before Xmas.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 22/02/2022 20:40

I think I had the Astra Zeneca booster.

Squeekyturtle · 22/02/2022 20:50

Iritis is linked to other autoimmune disease such as arthritis and there may be some in whom vaccination exacerbates an underlying but as yet undiscovered diagnosis. Just a theory though ! Do you have any family history of autoimmune problems or arthritis ?

MyShitEyes · 22/02/2022 20:55

No, not that I know of. Although two out of four grandparents died young (working class dangerous jobs etc) so possibly there are diseases around that haven't shown up yet. Certainly nothing as catastrophic as this. I mean I literally woke up and suddenly couldn't tolerate any light at all, one morning, out of nowhere.

It feels awful and is scary at the time. Although it can recur it is easily treatable and those who live with recurrent bouts tend to recognise early warning signs and can get early treatment (drops) it is rare for it to be dangerous or sight threatening unless it goes untreated.

MyShitEyes · 22/02/2022 21:08

Yes, it is really frightening. Also it took ages for the hospital to take me seriously. I'd went in to a&e and they were just like, oh you've got a sore eye, why are you making such a fuss when we ask you to take off the scarf round your head? (Admittedly it did look odd, DIY trying to block out the light lol). Does it cause corneal erosion? Because apparently I have that too now. It's all a bit weird.

I'm not normally one for vaccine scaremongering but it is just weird that I have the jab, pass out, then a couple of days later all of these random rare things go wrong with my eyes. And my friend's daughter, obviously much younger, has the same.

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation have they linked your problems to the jab?

Well, now:

@MyShitEyes

No, they just diagnosed blepharitis, but I'd done all the recommended bleph care and knew it was something more severe (I now have complications due to it). The Fexofenadine antihistamine has improved it by around 90%, so it's definitely allergy related. I don't know what's caused the flare up though as nothing in my lifestyle has changed.

I won't be getting another vaccination if there is a link. My eyes have been terrible and I'm not willing to compromise their health.

I've been doing some digging regarding the problem and will see what comes up. Might be early days though and not enough research as yet.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 23/02/2022 10:21

@MyShitEyes

I came across that article last night. I wonder if it is causing problems 🤔 I have been diagnosed with filimentary keratitis as a complication of the blepharitis, but apparently it's quite rare for blepharitis to cause such a thing.

tradition · 23/02/2022 20:14

On my goodness. I have RA. Very well controlled for many years. But have gone almost blind in one eye with Ulcerative keratitis, started 3 weeks ago.

Now off to Google connection with covid jab. I'm having twice weekly visits to eye clinic at the moment but no one has mentioned link to covid vaccine to me.

OvaHere · 23/02/2022 20:34

DH has had loads of eye problems. Been to see several opticians, his GP and finally got a referral to see hospital clinic last November. Is still waiting for a follow up because they don't seem to know what to do about it.

I've mentioned to him a few times it only started after his vaccine (one eye) second vaccine (other eye). He did mention it to the consultant who said they would look into a link.

Could be coincidence but interesting to know he isn't the only one.

For the record he would still have the vaccines because being in ICU with covid was a far worse prospect.

The4Seasons · 23/02/2022 20:35

Bloody hell! I've just got over the worst eye infection I've ever had (2 months and three courses of antibiotics). Just been to check and it started 6 days after my booster. I had wondered if I'd caught Covid, despite testing but now I think it might be related to the vaccine. It won't stop me getting future doses but I'll definitely be more aware. Thinking about it I've also developed psoriasis which I've not had before. Wonder if it's all linked?

Bootikin · 23/02/2022 21:03

Husband has iritis diagnosis well before COVID, then eye clinic closed during COVID leaving him totally without treatment. NHS extremely unhelpful and obstructive despite very vigorous follow up.

Went to top private ophthalmologist. Diagnosis and treatment by nhs incorrect and once he’d had correct diagnosis and treatment the issue was resolved.

Seriously suggest you step away from conspiracy theories and get a second opinion from a private specialist.

PaperMonster · 23/02/2022 21:23

I’ve had eye problems since having Covid itself, not from the jab.

MrsGethinJones · 23/02/2022 21:24

I have had detached retinas in both eyes and have lost some vision in one eye.

Im wondering if there is a link:

Squeekyturtle · 24/02/2022 19:30

Detached retinas in both eyes after vaccination ? That's incredibly rare and I can't think what the mechanism would be to cause that simultaneously !

Are you very short sighted or have some underlying condition ?
