Maternity Cover Getting 10k More Than Me

Mum2be5756 · 22/02/2022 18:00

I work in finance and have been very involved in the recruitment process for my replacement so I can see everyones salaries
The people we interviewed were all on 1k (for someone much more junior than me) to 16k more than me
We settled on someone who would be paid 10k more than me

Am I right in thinking this is not on? They would be getting the same benefits as me (pension, healthcare, holidays etc.) The only difference is they would be on a 12 month contract obviously

Short term contracts pay more to make up for the lack of job security.

I just wanted to come back and say I did raise the difference with my manager and I am now getting paid the same as my maternity cover Smile

Nice one, well done!

Well done! I did come on here to say don't complain about it, renegotiate! Clearly they will pay more so you need to bring this up with them. Congratulations on your pay rise x

You could ask for a raise when you go back?

On the other hand, it's fair in that the cover doesn't have job security and you do, so the job by itself is not worth as much to them.

Ah, and it's a sort of zombie thread. But well done for getting the rise!

I had the reverse when I went on maternity leave - my role was advertised at £5K less than I was earning. As a result, they had very few applications and ended up promoting a junior member of my team instead. My boss complained to me about the low level of applications and when I pointed out the salary discrepancy, he complained that I was messing up his budget by going on maternity leave so they couldn't afford to pay the same salary.Hmm

There was something similar when I went on maternity leave and still there were two people hired during the time as they quit for permanent roles. The extra salary is to entice them to stay for temporary position.

Interestingly, when I returned from maternity leave, I had a lot of interest from the recruiter we used for my maternity cover.

Well done OP. Thanks for letting us know.
