Is it just me or are there a lot of

‘5 loads of washing a week, what are you doing, we’re a family of 5 and only make 1 load of washing a week’

Full disclosure

Family of three

At least 8 loads a week. Do these one load a weekers have mahoosive machines?

We only have a small washer/dryer - two adults and a dog here.

We do (roughly):

1 x whites.
1 x darks.
1 x DH's work clothes.
1 x my work clothes (we both get mucky and gross at work so our stuff needs washing after each wear)
2 x towels - they won't all wash/dry in the same load.
2 x dog blankets.
1 x bedding.

RockstarDotCom · 22/02/2022 15:52

This has made me think of the Radfords, I think they had a second 18kg washing machine delivered....so she could wash 36kg at a time. 😂

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 22/02/2022 15:53

Bed linen doesn't need to be washed at 60c every week.

30 or 40 is fine and then you can do a mixed load.

A hot wash might be needed if someone has been ill or had an accident but not every wash if you are washing bedding weekly

Canhearthemice · 22/02/2022 15:53

I'm always amazed by the daily washing of towels and pjs and school uniform. And bedding every few days. Family of 4 and in average we do about 3 a week. We are not at all slovenly or smell or have illness because the towels haven't been washed for a week. People need to consider the environment more.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 22/02/2022 15:58

I do a wash every day sometimes twice if washing bedding & towels . I only change my bedding fortnightly so it’s not as if I’m ott with washing . Me & dh will wear most things more than once except underwear. Dc is filthy after a day in clothes so clean outfit and pjs nightly . Dc adult drives me mad with washing puts jeans in wash after worn once . I take them out fold & put back in room . Grin

@Singlebutmarried you should be able to see the back of the drum

RockstarDotCom · 22/02/2022 15:58

How full should you fill your washer? I go to about 2/3 of the way up otherwise everything gets wangled together.

We do the same. Apparently no more than 3/4 full but we had one repair man out who said no more than 1/2 full but that seems so little.

QuillBill · 22/02/2022 15:59

Yes, my eyes were rolling down the street at people saying

'there's four of you and you do ten loads. How unnecessary and wasteful. Will nobody think of the turtles! We only do five and there are two of us'.

That's the same you buffoon!

Trytryandtryagain11 · 22/02/2022 16:00

Just the two of us, probably 2-3 loads a week - dishwasher probably daily though!

PriamFarrl · 22/02/2022 16:03

1 x bedding (which is a full load)
1 x dark
1 x light
1 x white
1 x towels
1 x gym gear.

That’s in a week.

Staffy1 · 22/02/2022 16:05

Family of 3, on average 3 loads a day or more.

I can't fit a king sized bedding set in the wash with anything else.

@Chikapu

By removing their horn, and you use that to stir the tears and clothes to clean them.

Exactly as @Canhearthemice says - washing PJs after one wear, towels after every use, bedding daily etc is just insane. We are a family of four and do a load every other day.
bellac11 · 22/02/2022 16:09

We just about squeeze a single bedding set and a king set in together and do it on 60. I wont do bedding on less than that.

What does annoy me is that OH wont use a 'quick wash' which only takes half hour (he does the washing not me) and it takes longer than it all needs to. The quick wash is the 40 or the 30. He says it doesnt rinse everything out properly

ohhooh · 22/02/2022 16:12

There's two of us, and we probably do five loads a week 😂 Id be crucified on posts if I admitted how many meals we get from a chicken too 😬

bellac11 · 22/02/2022 16:13

I dont get the chicken reference?

ElfDragon · 22/02/2022 16:13

I do a wash of clothes every day. There’s 4 of us - me, 2 adult sized teens, and a pre teen.

Dcs have a clean set of school uniform/PE kit each day. I have 3 sets of uniform, and one pe kit per child. Ds wears full pe kit all day Monday, and needs it again on Wednesday, so that gets washed on Monday night (tracksuit, skins, shorts, top and hoodie - that’s about 1/3 of a load on its own). Since I’m washing that anyway, I put in the dds’ uniform from that day, along with my clothes from the day before.

Dd2 wears pe kit all day Tuesday, and needs it again on Thursday. So her kit gets washed on Tuesday evening, and since the washer is going on, ds and dd1’s uniform goes in, and again my clothes from the day before.

Wednesday I get the day off from uniform/kit washing as dc go to their dad’s, so I do a load of sheets/duvet covers. Usually one week it’s dd1 and ds (both single beds), and the following week it’s dd2’s (double bed).

Thursday it’s back to washing school uniforms and my clothes from the past couple of days.

Friday it’s swim kit and bits of pe kit that need doing - ds has to have kit in school every day, and they do pe/games each day, so there’s always bits needing washed. Plus the dds’ uniform to get me ready for Monday.

Over the weekend we all wear clothes, so that’s another wash, plus my bedding or a load of towels.

So that’s 7 loads each week, without particularly stretching it, or running a half empty machine etc. I would generally do an extra wash each week - towels, or cleaning cloths, or washable sanpro as there’s 3 of us using that too.

Easily 8 loads a week.

Coughee · 22/02/2022 16:14

Anyone else in a constant battle with teenagers over washing? I even gave them specific colour towels so I could work out who the hell was putting towels in the wash after one use. Its harder to keep track of clothes but I do pull them out of the laundry, fold and put back in their rooms if they've clearly been worn once and are clean.
The washing situation is slightly better in school holidays but term time is harder as it adds an extra couple of loads to the week even with them only going through a couple of sets of uniform. Oh and PE Kit. Add on to that 3 of us running regularly and going to the gym and the fact my kids are now adult size and I easily do a couple of loads a day despite my best efforts.

I suppose what I find odd is the judgment, as if people like me love doing laundry. I fucking hate it. Its the bane of my life but 5 adult sized humans are going to generate a reasonable amount.

ElfDragon · 22/02/2022 16:15

Oh, and the dishwasher runs (full) each day too.

OohRahhMaki · 22/02/2022 16:16

Only 2 of us and we do 4 a week... how do families manage without doing a couple extra loads?

  1. Bedding
  2. Towels
  3. Darks
  4. Lights (or sometimes a second darks).

Also our bedding takes up the entire machine. 2 bath sheets each plus hand towels takes up another load. Then it is just 2 loads of clothes / pjs which doesn't seem unreasonable?

Roselilly36 · 22/02/2022 16:17

I have a 10kg machine, 4 adults at home, my machine is on every day.

Meecrowavay · 22/02/2022 16:21

Family of 5, x 7 loads a week but usually over only 2 days as I hate doing laundry every day.

HarrySwotter · 22/02/2022 16:21

Yes easily do a load a day. Could probably do 2 if I wanted to keep the washing basket empty all the time.

BoredZelda · 22/02/2022 16:21

It also matter what size the people are.

I’m 5ft, my husband is 6ft 3. A weeks worth of his clothes is far more material than a week’s worth of mine. I guess a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers will have more washing than a family of 2 adults and 2 small kids.

My daughter seems to always have a full basket but when I go through what she has actually worn, it’s not that bad. We had 6 loads this week because there was bedding and towels to do.
