Is it just me or are there a lot of

‘5 loads of washing a week, what are you doing, we’re a family of 5 and only make 1 load of washing a week’

Full disclosure

Family of three

At least 8 loads a week. Do these one load a weekers have mahoosive machines?

LuckyAmy1986 · 22/02/2022 17:25

Do people get back from swimming and then immediately put just those things in the wash on their own?

If we went swimming we would put them in the machine and then load it up with other stuff. Or if there was nothing then we would wait until the next day when there might be other things. It doesn't need to be done immediately!

Scotabroad24 · 22/02/2022 17:26

Family of 3 plus ddog, we do around 8 loads per week. Honestly can't see how I could do any less when you factor in bedding, towels, dog blankets etc.

evtheria · 22/02/2022 17:27

Nearly everyday here. :(
DS is in primary and usually comes home with paint or mud on uniform. DP works in a messy outdoor job, gets covered in thick substances or soaking wet.

Hollyhead · 22/02/2022 17:27

@AlwaysLatte lol, I only ever wash dressing gowns if we’ve been ill in them, and then they just go in with a clothes load.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2022 17:27

@stayathomer

Um, do we need to separate colours? Have never done it unless have brand new clothes and then do it 1st time only. Never had anything crazy happen. All clothes are cheap and easily washable though
As I said, 30 years of doing my washing and never had to separate darks and colours. I only separate whites - and wait till I have a full load of them.
singswithitsfingers · 22/02/2022 17:27

Just me and DH here. Three loads a week usually.

littlepeas · 22/02/2022 17:28

We do loads - 2 adults and 3 dc - 1 teen and 2 preteens - sporty, often muddy and smelly - I also have a very active job where I get all sweaty most days. At least 1 load a day, more often 2, and our drum is 9kg.

romany4 · 22/02/2022 17:29

Just me and DH here now.
I have a 10kg washer. I only do 2 loads a week.

LuckyAmy1986 · 22/02/2022 17:30

I only ever wash dressing gowns if we’ve been ill in them, and then they just go in with a clothes load Same. we're only ever in them for about half an hour in the morning!

OrganisedChaos22 · 22/02/2022 17:31

5 here 6 at weekends.

Ds has to have his washed seperate due to allergies
So his would be

  • white
  • colors
  • darks sometimes 2 a week.
  • bedding /towels =5 Ours Dark daily sometimes can be every other, mainly eldests uniform. Let's say 5 a week Whites once a week Pinks etc maybe 2 a week Blue and greens. 2 a weeks other dcs uniforms. Towels every 2 days 5 beds once a week twice in summer. I get that in 3 loads

=15 total as a bare minimum.

I try to do less and let it pile up, do bigger loads but if dd has wet I can't leave that lingering plus I don't have airer space indoors for it to be massive loads

In summer I'm kind of worse as more eager to keep basket empty and peg on the line. Then it's kids rugs, a cushion covers, curtains the lot.

I'm far from a clea freak but I love washing!

OrganisedChaos22 · 22/02/2022 17:32

Oh and dh uniform absolutely cannot be washed with anything due to his job. So that's 2 a week in winter, 3 in summer.

onthinice · 22/02/2022 17:32

Towels, bathmats etc = 2 loads per week
Bed sheets= 5 loads per two weeks so average 2.5 per week
Clothes = 5 loads per week
Total 9.5 loads per week, family of 3. Not possible to do any less.

GeneLovesJezebel · 22/02/2022 17:33

I generally do one load a day, three and four on towel and bedding days.
Dishwasher twice a day.
And I can’t make a chicken last a week 🤣

randomsabreuse · 22/02/2022 17:34

Depends on age of children, attitude to mud of children and job/hobbies of adults. Plus level of coordination of the entire family.

Family of 4, in Scotland and we walk to school so that can easily be 3 full changes for me if I get a proper soaking on one of the school runs (3 times in the last month).

Both DC like puddles and mud, neither is good at sitting still while eating dinner at the table and both DH and I have our moments, especially with the curse of the clean on jumper/jeans which are far more likely to attract marks on day 1... I'll drop food on a newly clean jumper 4 times out of 6 but if it survives D1 it will then last ages!

DC are 6 and 3 so at peak "messy" age at school...

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2022 17:34

@redpandaalert

Then we get my the threads saying the teacher says my child stinks…. I’ve worked in a school and quickly realised a clean set of uniform a day is a good thing
A person doesn't stink because they've worn the same jumper and trousers a few days running.
apprenticewage · 22/02/2022 17:35

Family of 4 and we do 3-4 loads a week...I have a 10kg washer and dryer!

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 22/02/2022 17:35

I don't understand how people manage it on so little loads.
2 loads for towels a week,
Bedding x3 beds double/king-sized Once a week.
Atleast 1 load of washing per day for clothing.
Then there's sofa covers, cushion covers, curtains that need washing. I usually wash one form every few weeks (massive dog who wipes his face on everything)

How are people doing just 1 or 2 loads per week?

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2022 17:35

"we walk to school so that can easily be 3 full changes for me if I get a proper soaking on one of the school runs (3 times in the last month)."

If clean clothes get wet you just let them dry surely?

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/02/2022 17:36

I make sure that dh has turned his underpants back to front then inside out before they need washing. I wash my bras every leap year.
I pound them on a stone in a freezing cold mountain stream.
Is this too much?

knitnerd90 · 22/02/2022 17:37

3 kids, no school uniforms, 2 teenagers are now in charge of their own clothes washing (usually a load each), youngest child is Pigpen from the Peanuts comics, large capacity machine. I'd say I do 6 loads, not counting the teenagers.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/02/2022 17:40

"Ds has to have his washed seperate due to allergies
So his would be

  • white
  • colors
  • darks sometimes 2 a week.
  • bedding /towels =5"

How does he have a full load of each of these every week?
Usually if you wash per person, you don't separate for all those categories. How do you think single people do their washing? You just separate whites and any delicates.

Freshprincess · 22/02/2022 17:40

I do one on avg one load a day for 3 of us, including 2 teens who only have to glance at a hoodie for it to be considered dirty.
Sheets, 2 loads but on one day
Towels, I’ve got lights and dark so once each and Cleaning cloths go in with them
One white load per week
Darks 3/4 times per week

One load per day is enough to get it washed, dried and ready to be put away. Anymore and I’ve got washing hanging up everywhere. Any less and it starts to get out of control.

starfishmummy · 22/02/2022 17:41

@RockstarDotCom

I usually don’t comment on those threads. We do at least 2 loads per day, often more. I commented once and was made to feel like I alone was responsible for global warming. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Not from me!! I wish I knew where mine comes from.

DH and I wear clothes for more days than we should - he's wfh and I don't work. We just hope no one calls in unexpectedly . But adult DS has SN and he creates a lot of washing. On paper it doesn't sound too bad and ds is also small (hes in 12yo size) so it's not as if the machine is being filled with giant sized clothes!!

chicagononsense · 22/02/2022 17:44

3 of us.

I do about 7 or 8 a week.

Bedding that takes 3 loads.
1 load of towels (sometimes 2)
4 dark. Uniform for DH has to be clean every day. DS clean uniform every day (except jumper). My work clothes I can usually wear twice. Then there is gym clothes for 3 plus comfy pjs or lounge stuff for lazing around the house in the evening. Anything that we wear at the weekend so jeans and jumpers etc.
1 white wash but if there isn’t a lot it will go in with one of the bedding washes.
Then cushion covers, blankets etc get a wash but obv not every week.

I am in awe of people who manage on so few washes.

Flowersandbread · 22/02/2022 17:45

Family of 4 here and easily 8 loads a week. We're farmers and gym go'ers which doesn't help. My 3yo in particular is a scruff
