I can understand not all artists can probably afford to do this... but surely Madonna etc could...

Maybe they believe in freedom of speech?

Whingasaurus · 23/02/2022 05:29

Why should they? Using a position of power to stop discussion and cancel opponents isn't for everyone.

Artists don't actually get paid very much by streaming platforms. I'm thinking of ditching Spotify because of this. It's hugely convenient for us but would be better if we kept buying their music and making our own mixtapes like the old days.

@Lunar27

Plus gigs may return to reasonable prices then...

If the government pulled the plug on pirating sites artists could use the internet to just stream clips of songs - not the the whole tune? Thus the demand may be there to buy the whole song - together with traditional methods of media reviews, word of mouth, radio play, mtv play...

In 2008 it was reported that the ads on Piratebay generated $3 million (£2 million) in revenue.

In the 2009 Piratebay trial, the defence estimated the site's yearly expenses to be 800,000 SEK (a little over £60K).

Piratebay is also of course full of porn so the online safety bill may tackle it...

But let's not move away from Spotify's support for Rogan. Is it enough that they remove the racist pod casts but continue to pay him vast sums?

"Maybe they believe in freedom of speech?"

Is racism and giving out wrong health information freedom of speech?

jobhunter7 · 23/02/2022 06:08

"artists like her only get .003 to .005 percent of a penny," India Arie

"Spotify's massive contract for Joe Rogan is reportedly worth upwards of $200 million"

I don't think Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and India Arie are against freedom of speech but just don't want to be associated. It's also a bit of an insult that a music platform pays peanuts to artists but millions to some bloke chatting nonsense.

As per usual we have tech companies making billions off the public by shafting someone else.

Like mindgeek, owners of pornhub with a revenue of 460 million USD (2021) and this is how they got rich:

So far the artists are mainly CNSY/Crazy Horse but it doesn't seem to be getting much traction with other musicians.

Neil Young was already in conflict with spotify

The fact that spotify apparently pay so little in royalties is another issue altogether but presumably many artists are happy with a smaller percentage of the bigger quantity from spotify.

I own all of Neil Young's music on CD anyway so perhaps we should go back to itunes!

I have to say that I have never listened to a pod cast so don't really understand the money they attract. Aren't they just jock-radio?

SNUG2022 · 24/02/2022 08:47

And as Russell Brand said, Neil Young went to Amazon, that well known ethical employer and organisation.

Agrudge · 24/02/2022 08:47

Apart from saying going into a cinema full of black people was planet of the apes. Which was absolutely disgusting.

What has he said that was rascist?
