This is my latest electricity bill. I live alone, in a big (five-bed) house. I am very careful with electricity and gas usage because that's how I was brought up. I don't leave lights on when I leave a room, I use the washing machine every other day and same with the tumble dryer. I use a hair dryer/styling tools once every couple of weeks. Heating is gas and so is cooking. I have checked the meter and it seems to be working just fine. Does this bill seem correct to you? If so, do you mind sharing how much you use/pay and how many people you live with? AIBU in saying that this is not normal for a person living alone? Thank you.

Your usage is more than double ours.

Two adults in a 4-bed and we have an electric car.

SnozPoz · 23/02/2022 22:01

Someone might be tapped into your electricity. Query it with the company and ask them to take a look.

Travelledtheworld · 23/02/2022 22:11

I help an elderly neighbour with her electric bill and hers was £179 for a month. She only has kettle, toaster, electric fire, lighting and hot water heater. No major appliances at all.

smithboy · 23/02/2022 22:17

Hi I use Nabuh almost 2 years now OK I am amazed how some people waste energy but
then again if the husband is working and wife part time and claiming e s a who cares
And leave c t on when not in , what's next

FiftyStoriesHigh · 23/02/2022 22:17

Family of 2 kids and 2 adults - last month’s electricity was £72 but we’re on a good tariff that ends in April 😬 Gas and electric combined for that month was £164 (gas was £92)

StickyStickyStickStickSong · 23/02/2022 22:21

3 bed house, 2 adults and a baby. I WFH half the week. Heating pretty much always on. I use washing machine and tumble dryer daily.
Ours was £131 on variable rate and just gone up to £172 now and I am £72 in debit.
Yours seems high

Silvers11 · 23/02/2022 22:22

I should have said in my previous post, many on here are telling you how much their fuel costs them every month. Although they are trying to be helpful that won't really help you to see how your usage compares. Loads of people are on very cheap fixed deals still, lots of people on standard variable rates and some will have opted for a higher fixed rate in case prices rise even higher. Those who compare the Kwh you use with theirs will give you a much better comparison

browneyes77 · 23/02/2022 22:24
@Svara That is exactly my point, many people don’t seem to have worked out what they will be paying. Lots of people here seem to be missing the point and quoting their current low prices, whilst being completely oblivious to the massive increases coming in April.
Because that wasn’t the question we were asked.

The OP showed us their current bill. And asked if it looked about right.

So naturally most people have quoted their current bills to simply give a current comparison. Which is what the OP asked for.

Exactly

FiftyStoriesHigh · 23/02/2022 22:29

451 kw/h in January but that was high for us.

Pootle40 · 23/02/2022 22:32

@thewhatsit

And yes Op don’t tumble dry. With a 5 bed house I assume you have a garden? From now ish you can just dry your clothes outside again and plus point is that the sun gets stains out. Hanging my washing on the line and finally feeling the sun on my face every spring is my pathetic secret joy Blush
I'm just imagining my washing drying outside at this time of year. Heavy snow tomorrow morning highs of 4c! Lol. Not sure that's realistic for mid Feb. Mid March....maybe!

That doesn't help much as really to make a comparison, it's the usage that counts as some people pay far less per unit than others do.

As I would have done had Pure Planet not gone under......

Simplydebs · 23/02/2022 22:33

I run an ironing business from home and do on average 15 loads of ironing per week with a steam generator, I also do a full laundry service for a few customers so the washers on daily as is the dryer. In 23 days we’ve used 370 kWh I’ve just got those figures from my octopus energy app. There’s only two of us living here. I’ve just upgraded to an A++ heat pumped dryer and it costs on average 25p an hour as oppose to £1 an hour with my old c grade dryer.

She asked if it looked right. As I said, those comparing Kwh with the ones shown on her bill are those best placed for comparison. Lots of variations on what people are paying per unit.....

Thanks. EDF needs a kick up the backside as far as their website, app and bills are presented. I'll be tweeting them about BG's app.
🔥 🤛 you go girl! 😆

Mynameisnew · 23/02/2022 23:20

If you run the drier every other day, the Sun Wink says

Each kWh of energy you use costs 14.37p - which means that you'll be coughing up roughly 67p per cycle.

For big families who do three loads of washing a week, that could mean you're spending £104.52 a year tumble drying your clothes.

Ddot · 23/02/2022 23:21

Sorry but why do you use washer ever other day if your alone. Wait till you have a full load, use after 10. It does seem alot to me, could you close the bedrooms and turn the radiators in those rooms off. Get some heavy curtains and draft excluders for the doors. Just to let you know it's going up in april then again in October

cakeorwine · 23/02/2022 23:26

Well that cost is outdated..

28p soon

TeeBee · 23/02/2022 23:53

I'm in a 4-bed and pay double that. 😳

Blancmangetout · 24/02/2022 00:20

3 bed new build with 2 adults and 1 teen. Gadgets on daily, wfh 2 days pw, no dishwasher, use washing machine and tumble dryer daily/every other day. Showers every day.
£90 per month

sue20 · 24/02/2022 01:05

@billyt

You live alone

Why do you need to use the washing machine and dryer every other day? That is not being careful with electricity use.

Bloody hell!!!

This my thought. Unless you work in a fish and chip shop! I haven’t had a tumble dryer for years. Maybe you need to invest in more clothes that’s big use washing wise. Also appliances vary in age and make can make big difference.
me109f · 24/02/2022 01:32

Mine is a lot more, and your bill is for 6 weeks in the depths of winter. My house is all LED electrics, double glazed and I have a wood burner and heating by oil, and my electric bill has zoomed up to £180+/month average for electricity only.

There are 4 of us, cooking is electric and the washing machine run pretty much daily.

Bromse · 24/02/2022 02:37

That is approximately £4.11 per day. I've no idea if it is reasonable for a five bed house or not. Presumably you can turn the radiators right down to low and close the doors of any rooms you do not use. In warm weather the heating can be off altogether which will make a difference.

Like you, I live alone and pay £1,044 a year, approximately £2.86 a day, for gas and electricity in a three bed semi so I would imagine yours is correct for a five bed.

Have a word with your provider, they may have a cheaper tariff.

Kate0902900908 · 24/02/2022 05:54

We’re set to all be hit with an increase of 50% in April. That will be followed by another 20% in October. So in one financial year 70% increase.
I’m currently paying £100 a month for a 1 bed flat (work from home here all day) so I am planning on starting direct debit of £170 per month soon.

I've also noticed people assuming that is her total fuel bill, when she has gas heating, or comparing their total fuel bill. Our last bill was 81kwh for 28 days for two people. So 46 days would be approx 133kwh.
