If this is correct, how can a family afford to pay then?

This is my latest electricity bill. I live alone, in a big (five-bed) house. I am very careful with electricity and gas usage because that's how I was brought up. I don't leave lights on when I leave a room, I use the washing machine every other day and same with the tumble dryer. I use a hair dryer/styling tools once every couple of weeks. Heating is gas and so is cooking. I have checked the meter and it seems to be working just fine. Does this bill seem correct to you? If so, do you mind sharing how much you use/pay and how many people you live with? AIBU in saying that this is not normal for a person living alone? Thank you.

5 of us in a 4 bed house. We pay almost double that.

FawnFrenchieMum · 22/02/2022 10:16

Looking at that being 46 days and not one month, then its very similar to mine, family in a four bed three story town house.

Fatgalslim · 22/02/2022 10:18

Not really the point but why do you live alone in a 5 bed house, if the bills are too much could you downsize?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/02/2022 10:21

Me and 8yo DS in a 2 bedroom house. Was paying £80pm direct debit, just reduced to £70pm as I'm in credit.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/02/2022 10:23

I work out of the home so no one is in during the day, have no tumble dryer or dishwasher and don't use the heating at all between April ish and September for a bit of context

onlychildhamster · 22/02/2022 10:24

I live with DH in a 2 bed flat and this is roughly the same as ours. we air dry and use the washing machine once a week. I don't use a hairdryer. We do both wfh for a large part of the week!

actiongirl1978 · 22/02/2022 10:24

Five bed house, with always on Everhot electric cooker (like an electric aga), all the devices, two teenagers who don't turn off lights.

Our electricity is just under £300 a month at the moment.

AchillesPoirot · 22/02/2022 10:24

If you live alone, why do you need to have the tumbler on every other day? Set a drying rack up in a spare room?

OinkyO · 22/02/2022 10:25

The tumble dryer will use sooooo much. Worth looking at if you can air dry it at least partly.

CornishTiger · 22/02/2022 10:26

Just looked at some of my bills. 3 bed modern house. Gas central heating.

30 period we used 504 kWh

25 days 369.0 kWh

35 day period 607kwh.

We use devices, tv, tumble drier washing machine and dishwasher a lot.

I’d say there is something going on with your usage. Is there an immersion switch left on?

CornishTiger · 22/02/2022 10:27

It’s really not about cost comparison either. It’s about Usage.

namechange30455 · 22/02/2022 10:28

The price doesn't look excessive but I suspect from the prices you're still on a good fix? 1246 kWh for 46 days is about 27 a day. That does seem quite high. I think we are quite high users and we only use 17 per day.

CornishTiger · 22/02/2022 10:30

My unit price is 19.76p/kWh

Standing charge @ 24.44p/day

Some peoples will be less than that like yours is. People telling you the cost doesn’t help at all. It’s about usage.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/02/2022 10:30

Our monthly electricity bill at this time of year is about £300. 3 adults in a 4 bed house, 2of us wfh. All our heating and cooking is electric. We try not to use the tumble dryer too much but sometimes don't have much space as we have very little room to hang stuff to dry inside.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 22/02/2022 10:31

Do you heat the whole house?

3WildOnes · 22/02/2022 10:32

You have more than enough room to air dry so I would stop using your tumble dryer, they are very energy intensive.

Svara · 22/02/2022 10:32

My last bill was 81kwh electricity, 609kwh gas for 28 days. Two people in a 2/3 bed (don't use the box bedroom).

Svara · 22/02/2022 10:33

Your electricity is what we use in a year

McScreamysGhostPants · 22/02/2022 10:34

I live in a 5 bed house with two teens and my husband. I'm in a fix from last year and currently pay £170 a month for electric and £80 a month for gas. At the end of the fix it's estimated (at current prices) that I will be paying £245 electric and £135 gas.

Using4532 · 22/02/2022 10:35

I don't think house size makes a lot of difference unless heating is electric, it's more how many washes you do, using tumble dryer, if you have an electric shower and stuff like that. It doesn't look too excessive, are you there all day as that will increase usage

billyt · 22/02/2022 10:36

You live alone

Why do you need to use the washing machine and dryer every other day? That is not being careful with electricity use.

Bloody hell!!!

LondonQueen · 22/02/2022 10:36

It's usage that's important rather than cost, it will be the tumble dryer that is using so much.

Badoukas · 22/02/2022 10:37

4 bed house, 3 adults. Current running costs for gas and electricity is about £5.90 per day being quite careful.

Xiaoxiong · 22/02/2022 10:39

I know you're only one person but lighting, internet, fridge, freezer, (and if you have a 5 bed house I'm assuming both of those are family-size) plus tumble dryer and washing machine every other day will use the same amount of energy no matter how many people are there.

I would consider: downsizing; not using the tumble dryer at all but putting a clothes horse or ceiling mounted airer in one of your bedrooms; running the dishwasher/washing machine only when it's completely full.
