Shaver outlet in bathroom

Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 22/02/2022 06:30

We’ve just moved into a new house and my husband is finding it bizarre that there’s no shaver outlet in any of the bathrooms.
I told him it’s not that common to have one and he’s saying all bathrooms have them. He now wants to pay an electrician to have one installed- I think it’s a waste of money.

I know this is a bit random- but any of you have one of these in your bathroom?

Are they standard expectations in a bathroom?

We do to charge our toothbrushes but we had to pay extra to have one installed in our new build house. I think in the past when electric shaving was more common it was standard then not so much but perhaps more so now with electric toothbrushes

Untrained · 22/02/2022 06:36

Yes - had to ask for one to be installed when bathroom was redone a couple of years ago - use it for electric toothbrush!

ThatsALotOfPassionfruit · 22/02/2022 06:37

In houses circa 20 years old or less you’ll probably find one as standard. Anything older and I don’t think you’d find many.
We have one in each bathroom and do use them for charging electric toothbrushes and my DH uses it for his beard trimmer

AlandAnna · 22/02/2022 06:40

Will he use it? Is so HINBU

We don’t have one in our en-suite and it’s annoying as I have an electric toothbrush.

Twizbe · 22/02/2022 06:42

When we re did our house the electrician said it was now standard to install these.

We had a good laugh about it though as DH has alopecia and therefore no need of a shaver lol. It's useful for charging the toothbrushes is suppose.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/02/2022 06:44

Our house is 20 years old. We don’t have one. Toothbrushes and shavers are recharged in the bedroom. I think shaver sockets were more common when electric shavers had to run directly off mains power.

TheOpenRoad · 22/02/2022 06:44

No, definitely not standard. More common in hotel rooms than in residential properties.

But electric shavers seem very out of fashion so probably not as much need for the sockets

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 22/02/2022 06:44

I’ve got one in my new build flat, though I had to hunt for it since it’s in the bathroom cabinet. Again, just use it for my toothbrush.

BuanoKubiamVej · 22/02/2022 06:52

I wouldn't say they are totally standard but it's not unreasonable to want one. We have one in one of our bathrooms but not the other - the other is going to be rennovated at some point and we will get a shaver socket then. They aren't just for shavers but also various dental hygiene devices so they are a good idea. If there's need for electricity in the bathroom it is worth paying for it to be installed.

In America there are no regulations aboit electricity in the bathroom and it's normal to just have an ordinary socket in there. You could use a toaster while having a bath if you wanted to.

HopefulProcrastinator · 22/02/2022 06:53

Only ever seen them in hotel rooms but your husband isn't unreasonable to want one installed.

anonymouslyusing · 22/02/2022 06:54

We’ve got one in our new build and were told not to use it for charging toothbrushes. No idea why

JustWonderingIfYou · 22/02/2022 06:56

We do, period house.

Actually eveery house I've lived in gas had one if you include when they are attached to the cabinet.

labyrinthlaziness · 22/02/2022 06:56

We have always had one.

Is money tight? It wouldn't be my top priority but if I could afford it then it is useful.

NumberTheory · 22/02/2022 06:57

We have one in ours. Put in by previous owner. They pointed it out proudly. It's very handy.

Same here in Spain, normal plugs in the bathroom. Would do my head in to have no plug in the bathroom.
Caspianberg · 22/02/2022 07:01

We are in Central Europe. Bathrooms all have regular plugs. The power is still 260 like the uk. Haven’t been electrified yet. I use for toothbrush charger and hairdryer.

We have a double one built in inside the drawer storage under the sink so everything can charge hidden

balalake · 22/02/2022 07:02

Surely nowadays you have shavers you charge up and use remotely from the mains?

Peas252 · 22/02/2022 07:03

Shaver outlets are designed to power shavers. Plugging in anything else can damage the outlet, device or both.

wombat1a · 22/02/2022 07:04

Fairly normal to have them, however with the shavers now having much better rechargeable batteries I can see them not being as needed as before. It would be weird to have to plug in a shaver recharge unit in another room and then move the shaver forwards and backwards to use it/recharge it.

Octomore · 22/02/2022 07:08

That's nonsense. Plenty of appliances are designed to be plugged into that kind of socket to charge up.

My electric toothbrush and epilator for a start.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 22/02/2022 07:08

Depends how old the house/bathroom is.

Our bathroom is in desperate need of renovation and doesn't have one. My parents' bought a house with brand new bathrooms about a decade ago and they have shaving points.

TheGoogleMum · 22/02/2022 07:10

We have one - our house is 5 years old. We didn't request it. I dont think any previous houses we've lived in have though. It's useful for electric toothbrushes

ThatsNotMyGolem · 22/02/2022 07:27

Very old-fashioned! Most electronic devices come with normal plugs now.

Octomore · 22/02/2022 07:30

Electric devices that you would naturally use in a bathroom don't come with standard plugs though.

In my experience, it's only newer houses that have them. Our previous house was a 2009 new build and that had them. Older houses don't.

Octomore · 22/02/2022 07:31

Also, who wants to have to take their electric toothbrush in and out of the bathroom in order to charge it? What a pain.
