More a rant than anything. Feeling like poop with a fever and an infected wisdom tooth extraction site.

It took me so much fighting with my dentist to agree my tooth was a problem they couldn’t fix. Then they didn’t do referrals and it all got messy.

Fast forward 2 months from the first appt and I had my tooth extracted a week ago in hospital. I was told it was so rare to have a tooth so deep down in the jaw. It was taken out in 4 pieces and I was told bad pain was inevitable.
Over the weekend it got worse and worse. Then this morning I’m shaking and sweating. Cleaned my mouth and a huge waterfall of pus came streaming out.

Can I get hold of my surgeon? No. Gp? No. My useless dentist… not a chance.
Ended up using a private online gp and have antibiotics coming tomo whilst I wait for my follow up appt Thursday night.

I’m so sick of all of this bull. I’m tired, hungry, in pain and feverish. Just shoot me.

I am so sorry. It's not acceptable that your dentist wasn't contactable, or at least another colleague who could help you.

Hope the antibiotics are of help Flowers

He’s an oral surgeon who I had to travel to for the surgery. It was quite a rough one. There was no reply from his secretary and the hospital I had it done at recommended trying to see surgeon or going to the hospital for a nurse to review… 2 hour drive each way and I don’t drive.
Hubby can’t get time off work after having to be there for me last week.

It’s awful that There are just not nhs services available any more. No apt avail at gp and my dentist have been so useless through all of this that I didn’t even try them.

Your dentist sent you to the oral surgeon as he recognised the extraction was out of his remit.
It’s the hospitals responsibility for your aftercare

Ask your family to be alert for signs of sepsis.

You’re in this state and your syntax is still perfect. You’re a hero.

In all serious, @G123454321 dental pain is an odd one. Any other pain that severe and medical professionals (generally) sort it out quick sharp. Having had toothache and knowing how miserable it made me, I really really feel for you.

Second the recommendation that loves ones need to monitor you for worsening of your condition and the infection showing signs of becoming systemic.

This is dreadful, would suggest a trip to A&E. some years ago I had a jaw operation to remove a wisdom tooth that had not come through and had a growth over it. All under General Anaesthetic.
The aftercare was very exacting, very strong antibiotics, strong painkillers and medicated mouthwash. All to be taken over a two week period.
Please go to hospital and get some treatment straight away. Hope you’re better soon.

I wish they had sent me to one! I had to source it all alone. They told me they couldn’t do it, couldn’t recommend a next step or who to see. I left the 6th appointment in agony with no idea where to turn. I eventually found my surgeon through bupa as health ins cover’s wisdom teeth removal if done in hospital.

When I told them I needed a referral for that… I was told they don’t do that! So unhelpful.

Thanks for all the comments. I heard back from the surgeons secretary and they are trying to arrange him to book a consultation room at a hospital closer to me than where I had surgery.
I might be able to see him tomorrow.

I was also booked into my regular dentist this week for the second stage root canal (for the tooth they thought was my problem but clearly isn’t) and was told it’s not advisable to cancel due to the long wait.

Told them I’m dealing with dental infection post surgery and not a whisper of a comment made about it in terms of help. Rct stage is now in may. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m so sorry, I misunderstood.
You’ve had the procedure done now, your priority must be to make sure you’re not getting a serious infection. If you feel you are getting worse go to A and E ,in a hospital which has an oral surgery dept, (if you can, ) , you stand a chance of them paging an oral surgeon that way. You may have to be quite forceful unfortunately

G123454321 · 21/02/2022 22:23

Thanks. I will have to be on my death bed quite literally before considering A&E.
Been done many times before when trying to get diagnosed with endometriosis and was treated horrendously. I really do have faith in the nhs anymore all down to repeatedly being failed.

I know it’s there should I need it.
Thanks again x

It's a disgrace what they are doing with NHS dentists, forcing everyone to go private and using "covid" (that old chestnut again) as an excuse. Disgusting. The government must be saving a fortune

Littlemissprosecco · 21/02/2022 22:32

Just be aware an infection deep in the bone can quickly worsen. If your breathing changes, you can’t swallow properly or your neck/face swell you need to go

G123454321 · 22/02/2022 15:34

Thank you everyone. I saw my surgeon today. He arranged for me to see him at the hospital when he wasn’t even working there today. Went in just for me. Feel a bit guilty about that and worried about the bill when my insurance refuses it!

I have 2 problems. One being a cheek abscess that the stitches are causing. That could be draining into the extraction site, or it could be two infections. I have to be more aggressive and brush my stitches to keep them cleaner and to help aid them dissolving which will help my cheek hopefully.
Antibiotics to take with a second prescription if I need more. I have an appt Thursday which he’s said to keep incase I feel worse. If I don’t, no need to go.
If that’s the case then I have another appointment booked for next week to review how it’s going. Hoping the cheek won’t need lancing.
