To want to cancel holiday

StitchInLime · 20/02/2022 22:57

We booked a holiday to Mexico last year for this April. When we booked it, the reviews were great. But the latest reviews are pretty terrible. Bad food. Awful service. Place stinks of sewerage. Dirty rooms. Excuses being that covid absences and staff issues. This is a 4.5 star resort! We booked it with Tui. I’m going to contact them tomorrow. But I don’t think we have a leg to stand on as we’ve paid deposit? Has anyone been through similar and AIBU wanting to cancel if we can get a refund and try for somewhere else? But my daughter is so excited though (as are hubby and I but not these reviews are flooding in…!!). WWYD?!

No I don’t have any experience of this. But I think there’s a good chance that they would let you exchange to another Tui holiday in a different location if they didn’t give a refund.

Yellow85 · 21/02/2022 10:43

You should be able to change your booking to another hotel. I just did this with Jet2 after reading some reviews on our original booking. I did have to pay a charge of about £30pp

ElleGB · 21/02/2022 10:44

You will be able to transfer what you’ve paid to another TUI holiday. You’ll have to pay an admin fee but it’s relatively easy.

Mindymomo · 21/02/2022 10:45

They want your money, hopefully they will let you change hotels.

User76745333 · 21/02/2022 10:45

Which hotel is it?

CatJumperTwat · 21/02/2022 10:46

How many reviews? There are some people who are never happy no matter what, and they love TripAdvisor. I wouldn't worry unless it's a general consensus and not just a few moaners.

Verite1 · 21/02/2022 10:48

Yes just transfer deposit to another holiday. I’ve done that with Tui pre Covid and during Covid.

frustratedpomegranate · 21/02/2022 10:53

Which hotel? I stayed in Mexico and had the same problem with reviews but thought the resort was amazing.

Theimpossiblegirl · 21/02/2022 10:56

Is it the Grand Riviera Princess? I'm having similar misgivings but am going to take the risk as I've seen reviews like this before but it's been fine.

babybunny123 · 21/02/2022 11:08

dont you just lose your deposit if you cancel 6 weeks before?.

irishfarmer · 21/02/2022 11:12

I've never used TUI, but as others have suggested can you move your booking?

Trip advisor is great mostly but some people really will complain about everything. I have heard people in hotels/ restaurants/ bars etc giving out about the silliest of things and finish off by says "well I am going to give you an awful review online". I find you can usually tell from the way they are written if the reviewer is over-reacting.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 21/02/2022 11:13

Just change it yourself online. I've just done it myself with Tui. Just go in to manage my booking.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 21/02/2022 11:16

I’ve been to the top hotel (at that time) in Sicily and it was absolutely awful.

Been to others much lower down elsewhere and have been lovely.

But I wouldn’t be able to ignore lots of recent bad reviews (hence I am not checking them for my holiday on purpose!).

I am sure you will be able to change at least the hotel. x

RaskolnikovsGarret · 21/02/2022 11:17

Some people give a one star review if they have messed something up and the hotel rightly doesn’t give in to their unreasonable demands.

The only thing that bothers me are reviews about dirty/scruffy rooms. I’m not usually bothered about other things.

KaySam · 21/02/2022 11:23

We went away a few years back ,supposed to be a 4 star place.I’d have said 3 at the most, crap food and the cocktails tasted like toothpaste, rooms shabby.
We were speaking to a guy also on holiday and he rated it 5 star.

Trip advisor is taken with a pinch of salt I look at the mid reviews.as top rated could be staff and bad ones are sometimes picky customers.

You can change holiday on tui but you may be charged.

Which hotel is it in Mexico?

MrsRandallFraser · 21/02/2022 12:38

The hotel we stay at in Mexico is like this. You wouldn't go if you read the reviews, but it came recommended to us word of mouth, which is more important than any reviews and we've now been back 4 times. I found a lot of the complaints could be solved if they'd just told someone about the problems or if they'd researched before they went. I've also found the Americans to a bit fussier than Brits and far more likely to complain if something isn't to their liking.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 21/02/2022 15:49

@Theimpossiblegirl

We're going here at Easter too and slightly worried
Theimpossiblegirl · 21/02/2022 17:46

We're not going until July. I'm thinking they have enough time to sort out any issues. I think it will be fine, just keep an eye on the reviews. Usually I think it's people being a bit entitled.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 21/02/2022 17:52

I found Tui good for amendments. A lot can be done online.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 21/02/2022 17:55

I think you have to really read the reviews carefully. Normally about 1/4 are moaning about a long check in so I ignore them as put it down to people being knackered after the journey. If reviewers keep saying the same thing then I believe it. Go back a few pages too.

StitchInLime · 21/02/2022 22:17

It’s Sandos Caracol

Have you read the reviews? One person gave them a one star review because they got potato crisps instead of tortilla chips! Most reviews are good, the worst ones seem a bit pernickety to me. I'd stay there!

StitchInLime · 21/02/2022 22:29

I know what you mean but when we booked, it was mainly 4-5 stars but lately, a lot of negative reviews have cropped up. So it’s more a sense that things have gone downhill. I guess I’m just being overly concerned.

We had this problem with a holiday to Mexico a few years ago - part of the hotel had burnt down in a fire! I think it was a First Choice we went with and when I rang they said they knew nothing about it, so wouldn’t refund. They did allow us to change the hotel for an admin fee though. You could try that rather than cancelling the whole thing?
