To oppose NHS being privatised?

DH left me gobsmacked saying it isn't sustainable and we need a new model that includes private elements. This on the back of watching This is Going to Hurt.

Fuck that.

The NHS is the number one service that I think makes us as a nation. I'd pay more tax just to fund it and make it better.

Can you imagine being like the US. Nightmare of inequality and bankruptcy.

AIBU?

Well it isn't just a choice between the USA and the UK. The European model of insurance could be better

I think we would end up with a US system where the poor use the NHS (and can't get any healthcare) and the rich would go privately or even travel abroad for decent healthcare. My DH couldn't get a simple operation on time on the NHS so ended up going privately. People who don't want to die would end up going privately, perhaps at huge personal debt.

Increasing taxes would have a limited impact. It is very expensive to run the NHS and will grow more expensive with technological innovations.

You do realize that parts of the NHS are already privatized. GP service for instance is private in all but name. Admittedly, primary care i.e GP care in this country leaves a lot to be desired.
But staying topic, your husband isn’t wrong, the model no longer works in todays world. Having some kind of misguided loyalty to the system won’t improve outcomes. As for funding, people will be along in a minute to make all sorts of claims like NHS has had funding cuts and it’s underfunded. Its had a 20% funding increase in the last 10 years alone. It’s a bottomless pit. No amount of money can be enough for a model that no longer works. Change and progress happens. People getting poor care at the hands of this service won’t thank you because you are ideologically wedded to it.

Armadeus · 20/02/2022 23:47

@sst1234 so you trust the current lot to invest more and give us a european not for profit style of health care ? And you are wrong about increases in funding.

Rummikub · 20/02/2022 23:51

Agree with you op

Peoniesandcream · 20/02/2022 23:54

There is a long thread on this topic already. Essentially most of us Don't want it privatised. I'll repeat what I said on the other thread, personally I think instead we should look at saving Money in other ways such as stopping services such as IVF, cosmetic surgery etc. And concentrate on life saving services.

As several have pointed out there are models other than the US model. And I would actually strongly disagree on the NHS 'making us as a nation'. My experience of it has been a shit show and that it is nothing to be proud of quite the opposite in fact. I can tell you stories of medical negligence or staff not doing their job or the impact some of the current barbaric 'covid' measures has on people's lives.

Thanks for coming along with such a detailed opinion and some facts.

There's another thread about this, for a moment I thought you were the same op!

Thoosa · 20/02/2022 23:56

We did all this yesterday.

It’s not a binary choice between NHS or US commercial system, no matter how many people try to insist it is.
