bruised coccyx

I fell over in the park last week, and bruised my coccyx - it still hurts a lot almost a week later, and the discomfort doesn't seem to be reducing - is that normal?

Sympathies OP! I hurt mine slipping on ice over a decade ago and I still can't sit for too long without adjusting my position. Makes me a very annoying cinema companion.

@stairgates

Hurt mine in childbirth and took about a year before I didnt have to sit on a special pillow!
Not what the OP wants to hear but I fell iceskating about 54 years ago and have had various problems ever since, except when I was pregnant! I find standing still uncomfortable, I have to press into a wall or something, walking's much better but I can't walk slowly. When I sit I have to slouch and I'm an awful wriggler in the cinema!

I'm 3 and a half weeks in now and mine thankfully is almost pain free now.
I can sit straight on my bottom again now, instead of having to sit on one side. Standing up from sitting is okay now too and I can turn over in bed without wincing.
I hope yours continues to get better too.

I got rugby tackled whilst rollerskating and broke mine, 22 years later i still have issues.

70kid · 14/03/2022 04:34

I fell over on holiday and did the same
It felt like a red hot poker up my ass 😂

Took ages to feel better 9 months - 1year
But even now four years later I still get periods of pain with it

Nat6999 · 14/03/2022 04:39

I hurt mine, taking my she's off, overbalanced & landed on it. I was in agony for 2 years, was referred to a back surgeon who did injections & manipulation under anaesthetic. It took another year before I was pain free.

hesbeen2021 · 14/03/2022 06:31

Sorry to tell you but I fell on mine over 40 years ago. I believe it was pushed to the side ( was told they can't fracture?)
I was commuting by train at the time and couldn't sit down for a year, I then had to give up the commute as was so exhausted
It continued to be painful for a few years and, even now, I can feel discomfort if I sit too long ( lying and standing have never been an issue
At the time the GP gave me strong analgesia plus anti inflammatory meds, these did help to a certain degree but it was just time ( a lot of it) which helped

I hurt mine falling on the stairs, and a colleague recommended that I see an osteopath. Two to three sessions and the pain was gone. Not suggesting all coccyx injuries can be fixed this way but it worked for me. It was amazing.

Thethuthinang · 14/03/2022 06:45

You can help it heal by taking a pool noodle and duct taping it into a doughnut to sit on. On of those cushion toilet seat covers also works. The hole on the middle will keep seats from putting pressure on the tailbone.

Another roller skater here. Just a beginner. Fall on my arse most weeks but usually feel okay after a few days. This time, it's painful to sit on even now, two weeks later.

Sending sympathy!

Charley50 · 14/03/2022 07:01

I hurt mind and it took about 5 weeks to get better. I worried ii had done permanent damage but it was fine.

Crochetcacher · 14/03/2022 07:19

I hurt mine a few years ago riding a bike. It was very painful for about a year, then once I got my physio appointment it started to get better typically! They did still give me some stretches to do, and said exercise will help as it strengthens the muscles around it that support it. Have a look online for the stretches. Also advised to get a donut cushion to sit on.

I still get a twinge sometimes now, especially when sitting on certain chairs!

ScootScot · 14/03/2022 07:23

I damaged mine. It seemed to have come out of the blue and the doctor suggested it was from too much sitting down on a terrible, hard chair when I was WFH during lockdown! Grin

Really bad pain lasted about 8 months. I had to have a standing desk and really reduce time I was sitting. I bought a 'butt' cushion and a new desk chair.

It still twinges now time to time if I sit for too long. I need to ensure I get up for walks regularly and always use my butt cushion when sitting on a hard chair! I have spoken with my manager at work too and nabbed myself a lovely cushioned chair for my desk with great lumbar support.

Have a look online for coccyx cushions. I think mine was about £20 (the gap goes behind at your tail bone).

HouseIsOnFire · 14/03/2022 08:08

Another who took years to recover here :( definitely get one of the special cushions!

HELLITHURT · 14/03/2022 17:49

I've done it and sorry it takes ages to heal.
