To take childhood books to a charity shop (chalet school)

Of course I wouldn't be unreasonable but will I regret it?

They were bliss in childhood, an alternate world, but won't be read again at home. They have been sat untouched in boxes for probably 20+ years now. In a charity shop they might be enjoyed again.

I am another one who would love to have them. My dad gave mine away to a charity shop. He now knows they are worth money!
( but they were worth more than money to me!)
Anyway if you do give them to charity make sure you give them to a book one ( my parents work on charity shops and they know what to look for now).
I think Hospice linked shops are a good choice - you could also get in touch with girls gone by publishers - they may have suggestions.

My DD (16) volunteers in a charity shop and they had a few come in a while ago. She knew I already had them so didn't let me know but instead insisted on having them put in the window display at triple normal price they usually charged for paperbacks (so £3 instead of £1) - manager was really confused but went along with it as dd was pushy about it. Within 2 hours they'd all gone - I was very proud to know I'd taught my lovely daughter something of use in her life Grin

This thread is a few months old, but what happened to your books @AlmostSpringclean ?

My mum threw away my Chalet School books apart from a couple of newer ones, and I have never let her forget it 😭

AlmostSpringclean · 17/08/2022 22:31

@HesterShaw1 sorry for the late reply - prompted by another thread.

Oddly even though I lived the fantasy of being a Chalet School girl for many years, I can't bring myself to reread the books. They make me feel a little sad. They are still in my bedroom and after posting here I wondered if I might be glad one day that I kept them.

I feel similarly about my old Malory Towers and Twins at St Clares books - though I will pick one up as light comfort every 5-10 years or so. They're going nowhere, even though they mostly just collect dust, and I know DSs are unlikely to be interested!

MissyB1 · 18/08/2022 07:24

@AlmostSpringclean Im re reading The Chalet School in Exile at the moment (the one where they escape the nazis). I actually find them an easy comfort read.

Arbesque · 18/08/2022 07:31

I wouldn't risk a charity shop. You rarely see old children's books on sale in them anymore so I would be afraid they'd pulp them.

drspouse · 18/08/2022 09:37

@Notanotherwindow if they have a bar code could you try Ziffit? I sell my once read books on there if I don't think I'll read them again.
Books 2 Africa will take some types also.

AgathaMystery · 18/08/2022 09:43

Such lovely books!

That's the one when Bill's hair turns white over the course of a few hours 😂

AlmostSpringclean · 18/08/2022 19:45

The Chalet School in Exile is one of my favourites.

For the Love of God, don't Charity Shop them! Ebay or Etsy them! (and whack up a link. . .)

I need the Chalet School at the moment.

burnoutbabe · 19/08/2022 07:44

Yes lots of the later ones are worth £10 or more each. Some paperbacks I sold for £50!

MrsToothyBitch · 19/08/2022 08:22

Oh my god OP! Don't charity shop them,

Yes 🤣

Hopeandlove · 19/08/2022 09:05

I never understood why they don’t reprint them - they would go straight to top of the best sellers list

MissyB1 · 19/08/2022 09:12

@Hopeandlove
there is a publisher called Girls Gone By that do publish them usually one or two titles a year. I’ve got a couple on order.

@AlmostSpringclean Or webuybooks. I have used them and zifit and found webuybooks slightly better for books without a bar code as they have a catalogue of books they are specifically looking for.

In fact I just checked as I still have the app on my phone and they do have a special section for chalet school books.

I made quite a bit using webuybooks a few months ago. You do have to be selling a minimum of £5 worth but postage is then free. You download the labels and package them up and take them to your local Hermes drop off.

PuttingOnMyBestBra · 19/08/2022 09:47

Oooh thanks @MissyB1 !

AlmostSpringclean · 19/08/2022 10:07

I think I wanted someone else to enjoy them rather than make money. There were quite a few responses on the thread of people who would have liked them and so I couldn't figure what to do as couldn't send to everyone! In the end I decided to hang on to them in case I decide to reread in my old age.

My thinking about a charity shop was it would be lovely if someone else enjoyed them.

I wasn't really expecting offers to buy them - sorry!(And pretty sure I wouldn't be meant to sell on MN!!)

Wondering why charity shop seems a waste. I thought people might enjoy finding one they haven't read there. I used to get excited to come across one.

My kids have suggested I keep my favourites.

For those who might enjoy the pics....
There are a few more hardbacks but without the cover, some nearly 70 years old!

Unless the charity shop knew what it had they may get binned. Today's children won't read them and charity shops get too many books.

Join the chalet school sales and wants on facebook. I sometimes give my duplicated copies away on there for the price of postage.

burnoutbabe · 19/08/2022 15:18

The logic of selling on eBay us also that it will go to someone who really wants it and had given up trawling charity shops for them.
