To think the price of tickets for theatre are insane

I was looking to booking Beauty and the beast on stage in Manchester for my dd birthday, but omg-how expensive!!!!!
Whilst they offer a very small number of tickets for £20 each (a tiny number, all restricted views) the tickets start around £40 each and go up to £100. For a children's show. In Manchester.
A family of 4 would be looking at £160-£400 for one, single kids show.
AIBU to think this is completely insane? Or am I completely out of touch?

You're right. The Lion King is on near us at the moment and I'd love to take DC but it's £80 each which is insane.

From the amount of promotion that they're still doing for it, I'd imagine they haven't done too well with the ticket selling either.

Dishwashersaurous · 19/02/2022 18:46

Agree.

I used to gonorrhea theatre all the time. But For various reasons haven't been regularly for a decade.

Just been looking at prices and was shocked at the cost.

But then I thought about all the increased costs of putting on a show and realise that it's probably sensible.

I don't know who can afford these prices though, and most shows are sold out, so people clearly can.

MadisonAvenue · 19/02/2022 18:46

YANBU. I know someone will soon come along and say how much work and expense goes into staging a show but it really does put a visit to the theatre out of reach for many families.

Dishwashersaurous · 19/02/2022 18:46

Go to the theatre obviously!

Sorry but ‘gonorrhoea theatre’ has really tickled me Grin
throughtheair · 19/02/2022 18:48

It's not exactly a children's show though, it was a Broadway musical.

Theatre tickets ARE expensive for sure but having worked in a theatre I can understand why, especially if a show is touring. Live performance and all it entails is going to cost.

I'm not familiar with Manchester but I would imagine there are a few small community style theatres or companies which will put on kids theatre for a far more reasonable price. I'm in a much smaller city and there are a few such things here.

My favourite typo for a very long time !!

We saw Frozen recently and it was a lot per ticket, over £350 iirc

Theatre was packed still though

CrimbleCrumble1 · 19/02/2022 18:50

I also saw Frozen recently and our tickets were £110 for not bad seats. It’s crazy!

You won the internet today!!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/02/2022 18:51

Restricted views are fine in most instances, we just saw Beauty in Sunderland (weekend cheapest seats were £25). We had a great view but I know the local theatres well so know which restricted seats are ok and which are not. it’s an amazing show though, spellbinding

BitterTits · 19/02/2022 18:51

YANBU, such an elitist world. I grew up in a family that couldn't afford theatre, but even now that my own kids would be considered MC, we can only afford the gods once a year for a west end show. I know this probably isn't how you intended the post, but it's exactly the kind of situation that highlights cultural poverty.

Did you bastard your monkfish too?

Wishihadanalgorithm · 19/02/2022 18:54

Yes, was just going to mention Frozen. I booked the tickets and felt shaky for a while afterwards.

The prices are so prohibitive for many people - it’s such a shame but I can see why for some shows the prices are so high.

throughtheair · 19/02/2022 18:54

Some people definitely do spend an insane amount on tickets. I was in the box office and when a new season went on sale, lots of patrons would spend over a grand for various shows. People would say it was their thing though, rather than going on holiday for instance.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 19/02/2022 18:54

We are a theatre loving family and we make the choice of a trip to the theatre over a holiday. We live an hour from London, but travel, food and a show is easily £500 spent.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 19/02/2022 18:55

Wishihadanalgorithm Frozen is beautifully done, I hope you have a lovely time.

KatieKat88 · 19/02/2022 18:56

It's a proper musical, not a kids' show. Big cast and production - it must cost a lot to put on. We went to see it in Liverpool and it was worth it, so good!

throughtheair · 19/02/2022 18:56

But everyone please please do investigate what community theatre you have locally. No you won't be able to see west end shows but if your DCs are little there's so much lovely stuff around.

Theregoesmyhomebirth · 19/02/2022 18:56

Same for seeing comedians... and you can't say the touring costs for them are all that much! Just booked to see one in a small local theatre for £21 a ticket which is a steal compared to some others.

onemouseplace · 19/02/2022 18:58

I managed to get tickets for Frozen in the London theatre ticket sale thing that runs to the end of March for £50 a ticket for top price seats (I looked for dates over Easter and the same seats we've got were around £150 a seat). We're going to see Six as well for £40 for really good seats.

gogohm · 19/02/2022 18:59

It's not a kids show, it's a full musical and costs a lot to tour. I always buy the £13 seats here, or I go alone - if you book on the day at 6pm they sell singles in the stalls at £13!

PlanetNormal · 19/02/2022 18:59

It’s the same principle as any other form of live entertainment. Price is a commercial issue and will be set to whatever level the market will bear. If this show believes it can sell out at those prices, that’s what they will charge.
