Using skin-tone emojis

AIBU to not understand skin tone emojis? Lately I've noticed more and more of my friends using the emojis that represent Asian / Black skin tones to reference themselves even though they are white Caucasian.
When the option to choose from several skin tones for emojis first existed, the only person that I know that used the black skin thumbs up (for example) was my black friend. This made sense - the thumb was representative of her thumb (or so I thought). Likewise if a friend (of any colour) was referring to an Asian friend, they would have used the Asian skin tone emoji to represent that friend in their message.
I would kind of get it if they selected a random emoji colour each time they used one to represent themselves, but they don't.
Am I missing something? There's a default option of yellow (like Homer Simpson) that clearly doesn't represent any real-life skin tone, so if people don't feel comfortable about choosing a skin tone that represents their particular skin colour, this is an option. But it just feels odd to talk about yourself in black emojis when you're white or Asian. But maybe I've missed the point of them. I stick with the default yellow to avoid causing offence (hopefully).

Yeah I would think that a bit try hard too "look at me not instinctively reaching for the white emoji" even though we all would naturally gravitate towards the one that best represented us.

CharacterForming · 19/02/2022 14:38

That's definitely weird. Looking back through my WhatsApp feeds most people use Simpsons yellow skin tone, some white mates use pink, one black mate always uses the black skin tone, but I've never see anyone use other people's emojis.

Simonjt · 19/02/2022 14:42

Hmm, someone (white) on a class whatsapp group complained about me using 🙋🏽‍♂️ due to it being innapropriate as a while european. Odd considering I’m Pakistani.

Simonjt · 19/02/2022 14:43

Hmm, MN doesn’t like the emoji, it was the one attached.

I've changed most of mine from Homer to white with dark hair because that represents me. Using a colour that doesn't represent you it just weird IMO (ignoring default yellow!)

Cultural appropriation via emotion skin tone. Interesting…

I initially used a pinkish thumb as I didn’t want to be a Simpson’s character, and now as it’s in my recently used section I just use it as it’s handy. Can’t imagine using an emoji dedicated to a different race though. Is this a thing?

I've noticed this too. I think it's well weird, can't get my head around it.

mugoftea456 · 19/02/2022 19:43

My Nan always uses the black thumbs up. She's white. I'm pretty certain she's just a bit useless with WhatsApp. Could it be a similar thing with your friends ?

I can't see any other reason.

BiscuitLover3678 · 19/02/2022 19:45

That’s awful.
As a white person I use the yellow.
Do these white people who are using dark tones actually know anyone with dark skin? Confused
Cultural appropriation and so wrong.

Tunnocks34 · 19/02/2022 20:22

I find generally it’s white people who are trying to choose a more tanned emoji, maybe they aren’t pale white and feel the more ok or tones are more representative.

I’ve never given it much thought - sure mine is yellow (I’m Pakistani btw)

Macademiamum · 19/02/2022 20:26

I've changed all to emojis so if I post some they are black, some are brown, some are white, some are yellow etc. I like that they are people coloured Now but hadn't considered it might be perceived badly by others

XenoBitch · 19/02/2022 20:26

I remember someone that played Animal Crossing getting death treats because she was white and had selected some afro hair style for her avatar.
It is digital... not in the real word. I don't give it any thought.

MeaCuppa · 19/02/2022 20:27

My pale white DH used to send me a dark tone thumbs up when I asked him why he looked at me like I was mad - he didn’t know that he had chosen a colour, he was just repeatedly sending the same one.

Moonmelodies · 19/02/2022 20:34

Don't forget some people might identify as a different race to their outward appearance, having grown up in the wrong body or something.

Confused I'm fairly sure that's not the case here. There's nothing else about their clothing, lifestyle etc. that would suggest they identify as Afro-Caribbean, South Asian etc.

In my friends & family groups which contains white, Asian and black people everyone uses the colour of their skin. I wouldn’t dream of using a black one for example as it’s supposed to be my thumb up

I don't think that's the case for these particular friends. They're quite tech-savvy and had previously used the white emojis before making the switch to black (some friends) or brown (other friends).

This is exactly what I thought should happen, hence the confusion of suddenly seeing multiracial emojis from my white friends.

It's hard to know if this is sarcasm or not.
AuntyBumBum · 19/02/2022 20:59

I'm struggling too, I'm assuming it is. It's not cultural appropriation, on any definition I've ever seen!

Reddishes · 19/02/2022 21:03

I don't think it's that deep. I've just realised my "thumbs up" (on checking for this thread) is 👍🏽. However, I'm white (extremely pale blue 🥶 Scottish) and I must have just clicked it and ended up with this colour by mistake. I'm definitely not consciously appropriating anyone.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 19/02/2022 21:06

i just noticed on Whatsapp, the one you use most, that the ones with choices have a little arrowhead on their bottom right ...if you click and hold the other options pop up , so it's not an accidental choice iyswim

I cannot even find any emojis on fb anymore, it defaults to those ridiculous shimmering picture or those personal emojis everyone was creating in 2019...I have lost all the standard yellow face smilies!

It is accidental, in that, who cares and who knew people would manage to be affected in any way by an emoji.

Same in my groups, that or the default yellow.
