What is this noise? Should I ask neighbours to stop

Hello,

We moved into our flat as tenants about 5-6 weeks ago. We have a youngish guy and girl above us but haven't met them yet, they are also tenants. Recently we keep getting woken up at around 4am to this sound which we think is their washing machine. We heard it in the day this week so went up to ask what it is and if they could keep the noise to daytime hours but they wouldn't answer the door! Thinking I might need to put a note through the door but want to be sure it is a washing machine.

I'm aware with the energy costs it might be more economical for them to run it through the night but I'm really struggling to get back to sleep once woken up at 4am so can I ask them not to do this?

Recorded the noise and you can listen here:

Hope the note works, if not knock on their door again. In my first flat a below neighbour contacted me about something I was completely unaware I was doing, intentionally or not! I fixed the issue. Hopefully these two do as well.

You'd be loathe to change it if you knew you were keeping the op awake at 4am? (Yes I have read your later posts) You could put the washing out in the evening, even outside.

Yet another MNer assuming everyone has outside space… and this time on a thread specifically about flats!

All this talk of calling the leaseholders or Environmental Health (!) is massively premature. The OP has yet to have a single conversation with these people - and yes, I do know she has tried. Maybe they simply don’t know the noise travels, or is load enough to actually wake someone (as opposed to stopping them getting to sleep).

I usually run my washer/dryer overnight as it’s actually less likely to disturb me or my neighbours. My downstairs neighbour works from home, as do I - if I have the washer on during the day, it’s loud for both of us. In the middle of the night, given the bedrooms are at the back of the property and the kitchens at the front, it’s unlikely to disturb either of us. Don’t assume a lack of consideration just because it’s not how you would do it.

It's so weird because until this week it was just during daytime so no issue. But this week we have been twice woken at 4am and this morning (Saturday) 6:30am. I would prefer to still be asleep right now!
Earplugs. They are allowed to do their washing when they want it's cheaper at night probably
whynotwhatknot · 19/02/2022 12:19

Sounds like a squeaky dryer-not ops problem if they work shifts or trying to save money its disturbing her sleep

whynotwhatknot · 19/02/2022 12:20

Who says theyre allowed to make noise when they want then @collieresponder88-you?

AfraidToRun · 19/02/2022 12:34

I just spoke with my neighbours said that whatever it was was directly above our bedroom and what time we usually go to sleep so could they run it before. They run it now around 7am which is annoying but much less annoying than the middle of the night etc.

Having said that it really depends on the agreeableness of your neighbors. Living in flats is a nightmare some times.

No, I did not assume everyone has outside space. Confused This was in response to the person saying she'd be loathe to stop washing overnight. On a thread where someone was being woke up. I was saying it could be hung up indoors or out overnight. Mine is hanging up indoors right now in my 2 up 2 down. Not everyone has space for a dryer you know! If the pp is dependent on a dryer they could use that in the evening.

Actually the person i was responding to wrote ". Means I can hang the washing out during the day and it’s dry when I get home" when she was in a flat. So it's you who's misunderstood not me
Stifledlife · 19/02/2022 13:44

It's a tumble dryer and the bearings are going (that's the squeak).
The question is, who gets up and puts it on at 4am!

WomanStanleyWoman · 19/02/2022 13:50

Nobody - they set the timer.

andi62 · 19/02/2022 14:50

Sounds like a tumble dryer to me. You could try having a word, if it's anything like my neighbours upstairs they wont give a shit, but surely not all neighbours are like that.

CourtRand · 19/02/2022 15:37

Are you sure it's not something on the roof being moved in the wind?

We had a neighbour who kept threatening us with legal action for stomping around in the night when we were asleep the whole night. We heard it once and it came from the roof 🙄

Tabasco007 · 19/02/2022 23:34

@Mykittensmittens

And to me that sounds like the drum squeaking not a beep as such?
It sounds like the bearings have gone, that's making the squeak, beep sound. How annoying for you OP, if they realise how noisy it is maybe they will set it later.
SneakAttackDamage · 20/02/2022 00:02

Have they got pets? Sounds exactly like our old hamster wheel.

This is the noise waking us up at 4am that we were hoping we might get them to stop. We will absolutely be reducing our noise for anyone in any doubt.
