To have not realised my driving licence expired

I thought it was valid until I was 70!
DH has been nagging me to remember to bring it on holiday as I have forgotten it in the past.
He asked to see it on the way to the airport. I was quite put out then noticed it's actually expired.
I had no idea they expired, the text is so small I needed to look at it through my phone camera.

Think I've renewed it online, though the gov.uk website didn't ask for a photo!

Rather embarrassing, especially as I was huffy at being nagged!

Did everyone know this????

People are confusing the photo card and the paper, counterpart licence.

The photo card expires every 10 years and needs an updated photo. The licence, i.e. your entitlement to drive, doesn’t expire till you’re 70, when you apply to renew it.

The print on the paper counterpart licence is normal size. That on the photo cards looks like the mice on the marvellous mechanical mouse organ wrote it But it is there.

I got a reminder last time mine fell due for renewal, but if you don’t, put it in your phone’s calendar. I still have a paper diary each year for all my medical appointments, birthdays, MoTs, boiler service, etc etc and I note the date it’s due and in how many years. Each time I get my new diary, I copy it across with a due date of minus one year on the previous one.

@MillyMollyMandyMaybe

You dont get paper counterparts anymore. They have no legal standing. Haven't since 2015 or something. If you've still got an old paper counterpart then you're meant to destroy it.

The print on a driver's license (the photocard) is perfectly legible.

If you're a driver then you should know that your license expires. If you have an expired license and have not applied for a new one then you cannot drive.

Paper counterparts to the photocards are obsolete now

If you still have the old paper licence they are still valid. If you change address or name then you need to swap the paper licence for a photocard one

@dementedpixie

Paper counterparts to the photocard license are no longer valid. They have no legal standing. They should be destroyed.

Actual paper licenses, the old style paper license that a lot of elderly people have are still valid. As long as they were issued before the year 2000 then those are valid but hardly anyone has those anymore.

I have to admit it's never occured to me to check this

Why are you telling me that? I just said the same as you!

Grilledaubergines · 18/02/2022 16:20

Mine has expired 8 years before I realised OP. Really not the end of the world. Renewed with no issues.

YouHaveMail · 18/02/2022 16:20

Just renewed mine, received reminder letter.
Always receive the reminder, assumed it was the done thing 🤷‍♀️ (have renewed twice so far).

Maybe time to make sure you have the correct address?

I was gutted when I moved house and had to get a stupid photo licence and pay for the privilege!
