Rat party on a high chair

Pinkchicken85 · 18/02/2022 11:01

Hello all! Thought I’d post here as I don’t know if I’m being over the top or not. We’re not that flush at the moment so could really do without another expense.
When we moved into our new house a few months ago I put our high chair into the shed in the garden. Fast forward to today when I went to get it to clean it I noticed rat crap on it Blush and a bit of mould... maybe some pee else where too... basically the neighbourhood rats have been using it as a playground. Regretting not covering it... oh well you live and learn.

I’m very inclined to get rid, as I think bleach can only do so much. My husband thinks we can clean it and use it.

So tell me
No: I’m not being unreasonable, rat excrement and mould are hard to totally get rid off and a baby will eating off that surface.

Yes; your being unreasonable, just give it a good wash and bleach.

Bleach and hot water!

WheelieBinPrincess · 18/02/2022 11:03

Nah cut your losses, I like rats but not on my baby’s stuff, but I’d be more worried about the mould anyway.

YouMuckyDuck · 18/02/2022 11:03

I'd clean it too. Rats are everywhere

toastfiend · 18/02/2022 11:04

High chairs are £15 ish from IKEA. For the sake of that I'd just get a new one. Bleach and hot water will likely kill anything, but it's not always easy to get in the nooks and crannies and rats can carry all kinds of disease. I just don't think it's worth the risk, especially when talking about a baby's high chair.

VelvetChairGirl · 18/02/2022 11:04

Just clean it, its just a bit of animal poo and piss, they are doing it all over the soil your food grows in you know.

and if you wear shoes in the house your constantly walking animal piss and shit around your home thats stuck to your shoes

DropYourSword · 18/02/2022 11:06

Meh, I'd get a new one. Especially given there's mould. They aren't exactly expensive at IKEA

Babadook76 · 18/02/2022 11:06

Just give it a bleach op. Our streets crawling with rats. I’ve got cctv and I watch them every night climbing all over the patio table/kids garden toys etc. Everything just gets bleached

DoucheCanoe · 18/02/2022 11:10

What kind of high chair is it?

If it's plastic/wood you could definitely scrub it, if it has removable padding I'd strip it and wash with sanitiser then scrub the frame/tray.

If it's not removable I'd try scrubbing with bleach, hot water and a toothbrush.

This is freaking me out. What sort of street?
WheelieBinPrincess · 18/02/2022 11:16

No it’s true. There’s a house across from us that’s an abandoned building site, biggest rats I’ve ever seen, any time of day! I stand at the window and watch with the baby, we love it. Foxes have an absolute feast at night too.

stealthninjamum · 18/02/2022 11:17

Rationally I know your husband is right, bleach would get rid of germs and mould but I couldn’t let my baby eat off it so I’d chuck it out

Pinkchicken85 · 18/02/2022 11:18

Plastic Chico monstrosity. So many nooks and crannies...
to those who suggested IKEA... good idea but I live in a very rural area... nearest IKEA is about an hour and a half away and last time I tried to buy one of those 15€ high chairs they’d sold out ... everywhere.

EvilPea · 18/02/2022 11:19

The rats wouldn’t bother me, you can clean it easy enough.
But the mould would, it’s a bugger to get out.

PigeonLittle · 18/02/2022 11:22

Mould, rat urine and faeces. What would you decide to feed your baby from that you wouldn't throw out? Confused

I'm a slovenly Mum but I would get rid and get an ikea high chair, they're great and can even go in the dishwasher if you buy second hand (and own a dishwasher!)

SockFluffInTheBath · 18/02/2022 11:23

Sorry but ears are absolutely everywhere whether you’re inner city or rural or anything in between.

OP was it definitely rat not mouse poo?

PigeonLittle · 18/02/2022 11:23

That Chico is a bugger.

I'd scour facebook marketplace for second hand. A trip to ikea is pretty fun for babies though, and nice cafe if you wanted to buy new.

SockFluffInTheBath · 18/02/2022 11:23

Rats not ears, though rats have ears so ears are everywhere too Grin

Notimeforaname · 18/02/2022 11:24

I'd just clean it really well. Rats are everywhere. For every one u see, theres ten you dont.

Pinkchicken85 · 18/02/2022 11:26

Steam cleaning thoroughly 2 or 3 times should kill any bacteria.
The steam will get to places a cloth cant

Classicblunder · 18/02/2022 11:33

When he says "we" can clean it, does he mean you?

statetrooperstacey · 18/02/2022 11:39

I would put it out in the garden and thoroughly spray it with your cleaner of choice , then scrub it, then I would pour kettle after kettle after kettle of boiling water all over it, over the hinges, screw holes etc and make sure it gets in everywhere . Then let it dry and see how it looks and you feel. I would probably use it if I’d done the above .

twoshedsjackson · 18/02/2022 11:39

I agree with Classicblunder; he thinks it will be OK, you're not so sure. So he can clean it and ask you if the result is acceptable. I wonder how he would feel about eating off plates which had been "thoroughly cleaned" after having been contaminated?

Wexone · 18/02/2022 11:41

I would as people say clean it- steam clean it, bleach it - put what you can in the dishwasher. You are never more than 5ft away from a rat. They are everywhere

NumericalBlock · 18/02/2022 11:41

There's an ikea rip off you can get under £20. I'd buy new.
