To think schools should shut?

Yes I know some are but ours isn’t - winds of nearly 70mph predicted at midday. AIBU to think this isn’t safe at all?

Where are you? Ours only shut when we moved in the the red weather warning area about half hour ago so yours might be the same.

MorganSeventh · 18/02/2022 07:44

The risk will be getting to and from the school rather than when they're in the school, so if it's predicted to be worst at midday where you are, then school is probably the safest place for them to be, tbh.

Wanttogotothepark · 18/02/2022 07:47

It’s midday until about 3 when those winds are predicted which is why I’m a bit concerned.

It may not be as bad as predicted.

They would be better off shutting rather than have really poor attendance if people decide to keep their children home.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/02/2022 07:48

Ours has, but we are rural and the infrastructure isn't there if there are power cuts or no water. Plus travelling round country lanes isn't a good idea!
In a large town or city, people aren't, in general, travelling so far.

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 18/02/2022 07:56

Its weird I think ours are open but sat here thinking should I take dd and take the risk of having to go collect her when it becomes dangerous to travel.? One clear policy would have been better.

Littlecaf · 18/02/2022 07:58

We have a red warning in the SE so ours iis shut.

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 18/02/2022 08:01

We are red warning area and some schools are open some shut. I think they should all shut once it goes into Red.

MaizeAmaze · 18/02/2022 08:04

Nope. Yellow warning here. School should be (and is, except for DSs PD day) open.

nudelip · 18/02/2022 08:28

Ours are shut, I'm quite surprised tbh.

MaryAndHerNet · 18/02/2022 08:30

Just because it's open it doesn't mean you have to go. Stay off and stay home if you believe there's a risk.

balalake · 18/02/2022 08:32

It's not snow, where I would argue schools should remain open. I think for 70mph winds it is reasonable to close schools.

x2boys · 18/02/2022 08:32

Ours are on half term ,but I'm in the North west so I don't think it's supposed to get to bad here ,I have to go into town soon so I hope it's not that bad!

BogRollBOGOF · 18/02/2022 08:33

We're on INSET anyway. Schools will weigh up travel of staff and pupils and hazards on site.

A single building school in good condition, with local staff will have better stamina for staying open than a school with pupils being bussed in, staff with long commutes, multiple buildings, and hazards such as trees or building works.

🤣🤣🤣 The kids in parts of Scotland would never be taught for 6 months. Northumberland, this is our 4th storm since late November including a red warning. No schools shut unless they lost power. Thousands of trees have fallen, roads closed, power cuts for days into weeks. Suddenly the South are affected and its all over the news and panic starts.

Batten down, be sensible, prep and accept you can't control mother nature.

SartresSoul · 18/02/2022 08:35

Only yellow warning here so don’t think there’s any issue where we are but in red areas I’d say they probably should be.

busyeatingbiscuits · 18/02/2022 08:38

If it’s not safe, don’t go.

I wouldn’t risk my children’s safety for the sake of 100% attendance.

IamSamantha · 18/02/2022 08:38

Red areas possibly agree 70mph is strong winds but I thought red areas were 90mph. 90mph isn't fun and agree people should be indoors, 70mph, let the schools decide.

girlmom21 · 18/02/2022 08:41

My little ones gone to nursery. It's pleasant here at the moment, although we're in an amber warning area.

I absolutely agree schools in red areas or rural areas should close but I don't see the point in closing all schools while it's safe for children to be there.

They’re all shut now (the county in its wisdom made the decision at 9:05am…)
