School in the gale

fallgriefsmum · 18/02/2022 01:46

I feel anxious about the high winds tomorrow and am wondering whether it's actually safe to take my kids to school (not to take them, as we are in walking distance, but for them to even be there). AIBU?

I should have said we are in a non-coastal bit, the South East

Our local schools are closed. (Wiltshire)

How utterly ridiculous?

The kids have missed enough school and the weather might not be that bad.

Why don't they wait and see?

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 18/02/2022 02:19

Schools will have an extreme weather risk assessment. Ours are open but children are being kept indoors all day.

Marchitectmummy · 18/02/2022 02:20

Wait and see leaves parents in difficult situations doesn't it? I would far prefer to be prepared and the weather to be ok after all than find out on the day that 60% of teachers can't safely get to school or that the power has gone down and I have to rush off to pick my daughters up etc.

One day in the scheme of school life is nothing, all 3 of our girls schools are closed tomorrow and I am thankful for the schools clarity and pre warning of that.

DailyMailHater · 18/02/2022 03:49

So that working parents have time to sort out alternative childcare rather than a last minute scramble in the morning.

Red weather warning in our area - so lots of schools and businesses closed, from what I have seen all local schools have provided suitable work to be done at home / online

BouleBaker · 18/02/2022 03:53

All Southampton schools are shut. They told us at about 8pm last night.

HappyDays40 · 18/02/2022 04:10

We are on half term but other local schools are shut.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 18/02/2022 05:33

@SkiingIsHeaven it's not ridiculous when the area has been issued with a red alert (danger to life). Why take the risk? Our schools are closed by doing online lessons so they aren't missing more school

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 18/02/2022 05:33

*but not by

Teacupsandtoast · 18/02/2022 05:44

I suspect your schools will be shut in the morning. Some of our rural schools have shut already because there might be heavy snow at school run time here in Scotland, and we are nowhere near the red zone

PollyPage · 18/02/2022 05:54

It's a school, not a childminding service
KeepYaHeadUp · 18/02/2022 05:55

I'm lying awake on the top floor of a town house in SE England and already the wind is awful. We've not even hit the window of the red warning yet. If school is open I'll be taking DS in (driving today) but id much rather he was at home

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 18/02/2022 06:00

Why is it ridiculous?

The kids have missed enough school and the weather might not be that bad.

Kids having missed a lot of school already doesn't make this incoming storm any less dangerous.

Why don't they wait and see?

Because it gives working parents the chance to find alternative childcare or arrange a day of leave if necessary, rather than leaving them and their employers in the lurch at the last minute?

Moneymatters2022 · 18/02/2022 06:08

Our school is doing remote learning today. I'm glad seeing as it's a red warning here

OMG12 · 18/02/2022 06:24

@PollyPage “ It's a school, not a childminding service”

Yes we all know that but children are usually at school and therefore don’t need anyone to look after them during this time, what would you like parents to do, employ a nanny to sit round all day, every day on the off chance they can’t be in school? I really hope you’re not a teacher educating children if you can’t even think this through,

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 18/02/2022 06:30

You might find the school have to close today anyway. I’m in South Wales and all the schools around here are closed today- for good reason.

DaisyDozyDee · 18/02/2022 06:36

Our weather warning switched from amber to red overnight. The school have just switched to home learning for today. It’s the right choice.
When the Met Office puts out a red warning, anyone with the power to make the decision to reduce the number of journeys being made should do so.

thewhatsit · 18/02/2022 06:37

We’re on half term here in my bit of London but I would not be taking to school if we were in.

DailyMailHater · 18/02/2022 07:48

@PollyPage I know it’s not a child minding service but I have still had to make alternative arrangements for my child today due to school closure.

My post was in response to a post saying that schools should “wait and see” rather than announcing closures already..and I was making the point that i would rather be told the night before so I could make arrangements as I am still required to attend work
.

Given there's a red warning for the SE, now I'd say yanbu to not take.
fairylightsandwaxmelts · 18/02/2022 08:10

Why do people say things like this?

If schools close, parents need to sort out alternative arrangements - you can't just leave primary aged children home alone all day while you go off to work as usual Grin

So if parents know in advance, they can at least speak to work and arrange a day off, see if they can WFH, swap shifts with a colleague or arrange for grandparents or something to help out.

I really can't see the issue with being prepared and planning ahead.

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/02/2022 08:10

Ours jessaged to say they were both closed this morning which is a relief because Its just starting to pick up. Drop off wouod be OK.but pick up not so much.

All the others called it yesterday which would have been better to do as it gives u time to sort stuff out

ufucoffee · 18/02/2022 08:12

YABU not to take them to school OP.

KatherineofGaunt · 18/02/2022 08:18

I just checked. Quite a few local schools closed, but they tend to be the secondary schools where pupils are travelling in via coach and/or have more remote locations.

I think for most primaries where pupils are in walking distance, it should be fine to have them in. Although I do find windy weather the worst for negatively affecting children's behaviour in the classroom! At least I'm not teaching today Grin
