I'm in a job I am unhappy in (I am a Healthcare Support Worker). I currently work 3 days a week (7.5 hour days) and have been offered a new job. I was hoping to do 2 long days (12 hours) instead which would have been better financially but they can't offer that (fair enough!)- they can offer 2 short shifts (7 hour) and a long day (12 hours).

My concern if I do 3 days still with one longer day is that I will have less time with my 3 children and only slightly more pay than I get now (approx £100 pcm). It is a further drive so this may even be eaten up by petrol.
Thinking about it I have these options:

a) Do 2 short shifts and 1 long day. Earn slightly more, see children one less evening a week. I will still enjoy the job more than mine now

b) Ask to do 1 long day and 1 short shift. Earn less (Approx £200 less) a month but take youngest out of nursery 1 day so end up fairly even. Less hours that I am doing now total so less pension etc.

c) Ask to do 1 long day and 1 short shift. Keep youngest in nursery for third day and do bank work. Not as reliable to get this, often v short notice and may not fit in with other kids etc. Also in holidays etc this wouldn't be possible so I would still be paying nursery day but also not getting bank money so potentially down money compared to now.

Some things are temporary (e.g. until youngest gets 30 free hours/starts school) but I don't know what to do.

Which would you choose?

Kids will be fine. They see enough of you and you'll be happier and have more funds

Can you manage financially on B?

If so I’d suggest that option to enable you to spend more time with dc.

You can increase your hours once they are at school. Or change job.

@Elieza yes we can- my salary isn’t huge so they monthly saving from taking DC our pretty much equates to how much I would have earnt.
