Car

I found a car I want to buy on gumtree from a seller. The seller lives in Manchester which is 3/4 hours away from me so he has offered to use a delivery service. He’s told me ‘PayPal/Hermes is offering the escrow payment/delivery service and uShip will handle the transport’. However I will need to pay via bank transfer or PayPal to delivery company rather than actual seller and they will hold money until I receive, inspect and agree to keep vehicle. I will also have a 5 day refund policy so if I want to return for any reason then the transport company will transfer money back in to my account. Can anyone tell me if this seems legitimate? Thank you

As others said op, it's a scam.
Why on earth would he send you a passport?
I don't know why some are getting on your back either.
Delete and block the seller and report to Gumtree.
Good luck in your search.

Anon253 I am in the motor trade family business since 1947 just checked glasses guide and its mot history it books at £9860 trade to retail £11400, but because of the silly prices would cost £12500, so I would stay well clear as you have said you are not silly and just stay away if you find anymore cars (anyone on here in the uk) fell free to pm me and I can do a valuation for you ) Hop eyou get your next car soon xx

Anon253 · 17/02/2022 16:36

Thank you. I really don’t understand the outrage from the small amount of people when all I have done is followed everyone’s advice. I’ve reported seller and blocked. I will be more careful in future

Please ignore the bullies on here, love. Some idiots do it just for the drama of a 'pile on' it's not personal. Glad you didn't lose any of your money and I really hope you find a lovely Audi! I used to have the Q2 automatic and it was brilliant. Whichever model Audi you get, I highly recommend a diesel, they last longer and the fuel savings are quite significant. Best of luck! Wine

@ohhooh

OP means it’s 3 to 4 hours away.

SmellinOfTroy · 17/02/2022 16:53

just as an aside, how much is the insurance on an Audi A1 at 19?

marqueses · 17/02/2022 17:00

Where does she say that? She's telling us she's not stupid yet you are saying she doesn't know the difference between 3/4 of an hour and 3-4 hours Confused

Duchess379 · 17/02/2022 17:08

No. No & no.

Anon253 · 17/02/2022 17:12

My insurance company that I’ve been with for 2 years quoted me £652 annual cost before for an Audi A1 I was interested in. Black box included of course

Thanks a lot! I’m hoping to keep looking until I find a suitable and affordable one for me, specifically a diesel. I don’t want to rush into it so I will keep searching xx

Do you do a lot of motorway driving?
Anon253 · 17/02/2022 17:34

No I rarely use motorway at all.

A similar car should be no less than £8/9k. You can get an A1 for £5k but you’ll need to be looking for something with higher mileage. Personally, I wouldn’t touch a 10 year old VW/Audi with a 10 foot pole.

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 17/02/2022 17:54

Scam.

Why is that, VW are very reliable, golfs for example can go on for much longer than 10 years. The mileage in the one the OP has given is as low as you're going to get for a 10 year old car

Are you mixing them up with a different manufacturer?

Hardly. They used to be reliable and well built, these days they’re far from it and in fact are usually found well below average in reliability surveys/tables. If you want reliable, buy a Toyota.

SmellinOfTroy · 17/02/2022 20:47

Why are you looking for a diesel then? Surely diesel is better for long distance, motorway driving

What sort of driving do you do?

Fabvegetablegrower · 17/02/2022 21:16

I would avoid a diesel too especially for driving round town short distances. Toyotas are really reliable as others have mentioned.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2022 21:32

I agree, you don't want a diesel, especially a VAG one if you don't do regular decent runs as you'll clog the DPF, which can be £££s to fix. If you don't understand that sentence, you definitely don't want one.

Plus there's the ever creeping clean air zone charges, which could render a diesel car a worthless millstone that costs a fortune to drive anywhere.

This is completely spot on...

(We keep having this conversation with grandparents - but they are not ready to listen and seem obsessed with diesel as the right choice of car that gets trotted out every other day for a journey to the local co-op and never gets up to full temperature apart from their once a year journey to the caravan... )
