To not want my dd to be on the roads tomorrow (storm related)

Hi,

Dd is early teens and is supposed to be visiting grandparents tomorrow, an hour or so drive on the motorway (they're picking up/dropping off) but given the latest news about the coming storms, I'm seriously considering cancelling, but my mum thinks I'm being ott. It's been planned for a long time and dd is really looking forward to it, but I'm hearing that the warning level will be up to red by tomorrow and I just don't think it's worth the risk. You really don't want to be on the motorway with 80-100 mph winds unless it's absolute emergency do you?

What do you think?

Where I am the advice is not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
Could she travel today instead? The weathers much calmer here today.
YANBU I wouldn't want to drive on a motorway in a storm and wouldn't want my dd to either

Peanut82 · 17/02/2022 11:08

Sorry just re read I thought your dd was driving, not had enough coffee yet 😂
I'd still cancel

vesperlindor · 17/02/2022 11:09

DH potentially has a long journey to make in the next few days (when he chooses) - I'll be really annoyed/worried if he decides to go tomorrow, and be doing my best to persuade him otherwise!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/02/2022 11:10

Supposed to be travelling home tomorrow, London to Yorkshire. Weve delayed a day.

catscatscatseverywhere · 17/02/2022 11:11

I am travelling to work on the motorway, so I am gonna do it as usual. But I would cancel any extra trips, yes.

Sirzy · 17/02/2022 11:14

Are you in the red zone? If so definitely cancel. Otherwise maybe see how it is? Or can they visit her at yours if they are comfy driving?

Campervangirl · 17/02/2022 11:19

I work in the rail industry and we've been told not to travel for the next few days, this could hold up work but safety comes first.
I'd say no to gp's and dd travel plans, its not worth the risk

Akire · 17/02/2022 11:22

It’s going start early hours of Friday so bit late to travel just for a fun event. Go tonight and stay off since it’s half term?

Saying gust up to 90mph on ground level not high up so you be fool risk it. Fingers crossed it not be so bad but every storm we have couple people die from accidents it’s really not worth it

underneaththeash · 17/02/2022 11:55

I'd wait and see, they really don't know where it's going to hit and it may be fine.

Theyellowflamingo · 17/02/2022 12:02

We just cancelled a family visit due to the weather forecast. Even if you’re not actually involved in an accident you could easily get stuck behind one and it could be a very unpleasant trip. Or she could get stuck at her grandparents. No way I’d drive in that kind of weather unless it was essential. If they’re an hour away just reschedule.

Bagelsandbrie · 17/02/2022 12:03

Could she not go now..? Before it gets bad?

SnakeLinguine · 17/02/2022 12:04

We're in Ireland, but have a major weather warning from 3 am till 8 am in the morning -- DS's school head has messaged to say school may be closed.

REP22 · 17/02/2022 12:06

Not OTT at all, especially if you're in the zones. We are, and are getting farm livestock in now so that they are safe and the people responsible for them won't be driving out and about unnecessarily.

For the sake of one day's missed visit, I wouldn't risk it. Weather is easily and tragically often underestimated and "what if"/"if only we hadn't" is a terrible question to have to live with for the rest of your days.

I know it's disappointing, but it's just one visit and the forecasts are quite grim. Can they Facetime/Zoom instead just this once?

Best wishes to you.

Hotpinkangel19 · 17/02/2022 12:07

We are due to fly to Portugal from Manchester on Saturday! Travelling down to Manchester on Friday night - bit worried!

NerrSnerr · 17/02/2022 12:08

Her half term may be starting tomorrow which may be why they're planning on travelling then (it's half term for us next week).

I would personally go today (if it's her half term this week) or wait until Saturday.

JustMsInvisible · 17/02/2022 12:23

Possible that the storm won’t manifest itself into this great storm as predicted. See what tomorrow brings

Temese · 17/02/2022 12:28

Yanbu. I was planning to drive from London, going north tomorrow. I'll either go tonight if I can get away, or Saturday morning.

Ponoka7 · 17/02/2022 12:28

If it's red weather warning, she doesn't go. Every storm we read about the deaths of people who wasn't traveling for essential reasons and it's just bloody selfish. They put emergency crews at risk. The child killed during the last storm was tragic.

MyMaiTai · 17/02/2022 13:17

Thanks everyone. I think I'm just going to put my foot down and say no.

YANBU and I'm glad you're saying No, the risk just wouldn't be worth it! Your nerves would be shredded even if nothing bad happened and your DD might well have been scared stiff on the journey too. She can go to her GM's another time, when there won't be such a serious risk to life and limb!

2Gen · 17/02/2022 13:32

I'm in Ireland too. Yesterday was bad enough; my back is in rag order from trying to hold the car steady and painkillers aren't cutting it. Feck it, we're staying at home tomorrow so, or at least until it has calmed right down!
ClaraThree · 17/02/2022 13:38

It’s very selfish to drive in a storm - puts others at risk .
Essential travel is key workers travelling to work, emergency hospitals trips.
Not holidays , days out or shopping .

mibbelucieachwell · 17/02/2022 13:50

It all depends where you are.

We were in the amber zone for storm Dudley yesterday and I felt it was all a bit of an overreaction. I'm usually quite cautious about safety.
