To have finally cracked the duvet conundrum!

After years of being too hot, throwing off the duvet then being too cold, and 15 years of husband hogging duvet in the night, I’ve finally cracked it! A superking 4.5 tog summer duvet each, folded over to make like a single 9 tog each. Get too hot, throw top half off so is 4.5 tog again but don’t get too cold as still have duvet!

Don’t ask me what I’ll do in the summer though… 😂.

Sorry for dull post but this has been life-changing in my dull little life!

We use a super king 4.5 tog all year round, if we are cold getting into bed we just cuddle for longer.

thewhatsit · 16/02/2022 20:45

Best thing about a lower fog / summer duvet is that it fits easily in the washing machine.

eldora · 16/02/2022 20:49

Glad you’ve found a solution that works for you! Two super king duvets would be too much work for us.

We use one 4 tog king size all year round. In winter we use brushed cotton sheets and duvet cover which gives added warmth.

I am eyeing up a 1 tog duvet.

ChristmasCurry · 16/02/2022 21:01

We use Night Owl Coverless Duvet.

We each use a single with a different tog rating.

sanbeiji · 16/02/2022 21:02

You’re a genius OP! Off to get one myself

Wrenna · 16/02/2022 21:02

I just use sheets and blankets! I even take a blanket to hotels since 99% of the time they use duvets and I have exactly the same problem as you do. I’m from the US though where top and bottom sheets, light & heavy blankets are still used.

devildeepbluesea · 16/02/2022 21:06

ExDH and I used to have our own duvets. Sweaty ExDH had a 1Tog all year round. I would have my ancient, but still gorgeous, 5 tog duck down. I’d just put a blank or over the top if I was cold in deepest winter.

tearinghairout · 16/02/2022 21:06

I use a 2.5 tog all year round with two thin blankets on top on the coldest nights. Threw both blankets off last night!

notagainnotagain · 16/02/2022 21:07

King size bed.
2 single duvets.
Summer or winter weight as needed.

MaizeAmaze · 16/02/2022 21:14

What about a 1 tog for the summer?
Or, get a king sized duvet cover, stitch down the middle, and have a single duvet in one half, and the other half empty?

Robin60 · 16/02/2022 21:15

I’ve recently bought a king size duvet - one half has a 10.5 tog rating (fir me) and the other half is 14.5 for my husband. This is one duvet - nit two halves out together. A game changer

littlesnowdropfairy · 16/02/2022 21:36

We have a superking 13.5 tog duvet all year round. I LOVE it! In the winter I add a heave bedspread (which we spend all night kicking off🤣) it's more about the weight than the heat for me, it's so cosy. Probably too hot for DH if I'm honest but I go without a top sheet to suit him so🤷🏼‍♀️

littlesnowdropfairy · 16/02/2022 21:36

*heavy!

rosiebl · 16/02/2022 22:09

In summer, just put away one of the duvets and share one 4.5 tog superking.

Chishnfips · 16/02/2022 22:16

We have 1 King size bed and 2 single duvets. Dh has 7.5 tog I have 13 tog.

FantasticFebruary · 16/02/2022 22:16

@Robin60. Fab!!! Where did you buy it from??

I have an old duvet that I love, but it really needs replacing and I have no idea what tog to buy.

I have various duvet covers and put them on according to the weather as that makes a huge difference to me. In the summer I often just have a sheet or duvet cover.

But I don't know what to buy for winter, reading these posts maybe a 4.5 would be ok?! I had been thinking 10, but maybe I'd cook?

PizzaInWoking · 16/02/2022 22:22

I have a 13.5 all year round plus a heavy blanket on my feet and two other blankets 😂 dp has a separate 4.5 all year round 🥶

Indoorcamping · 16/02/2022 22:24

Where are you all that 4.5 tog and lower is enough in February?!

I currently have 10.5 tog plus a large fleece throw. I'm also wearing joggers & a t shirt as PJs with a fleece dressing gown over.

At best I'll take the dressing gown off if I'm a little warm.

Oh and we have the heating coming on a bit over night too.

TheFlis12345 · 16/02/2022 22:26

We are both warm sleepers. 4.5 tog from October to April usually, add a throw over the top on really cold nights, just have a cotton sheet in the warm months. Oh and always size up on them, we have super king duvets etc on a king size bed.

TheFlis12345 · 16/02/2022 22:27

Oh and we’re in the Home Counties and wear shorts and T’s / vests in bed!

It was Julian Charles,
‘ Silentnight Yours and Mine Dual Tog Duvet - 10.5/13.5 Tog’, it was only £40, so worth a try.
There are similar ones available on Amazon but the tog rating didn’t suit me - I’ll probably look again in the summer for a lighter weight.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/02/2022 22:33

weighted blanket
duvet on top in winter

still haven't worked out how to wash the blanket :(

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 16/02/2022 22:42

Feather duvet all year round. Warm in winter, cool in summer, plus it just sort of folds itself around you in a loving embrace. I never wear anything more than pants in bed all year round, and the house is usually about 17 degrees.

Esspee · 16/02/2022 23:01

4.5 tog is fine in winter and I'm in Scotland. Our central heating goes off at 10pm and back on at 6pm.

justasking111 · 16/02/2022 23:30

USA friend bought me a bedspread set years ago. I ordered a new one from Macy's a couple of years ago. When cold it's duvet and bedspread when hot just bedspread, when coolish just fold bedspread down. The weight stops the duvet drifting off either of us. It's a Martha Stewart set. Cotton and washes easily. A game changer for us
