To ask what route you'd go down

Route 1 - current job at managers level but not paid a managers full wage. Contracted 37 hours a week but work upwards of 40. Understaffed and stressed and no progression routes BUT recognised as a manager, management team are lovely and I know the job inside out.

Route 2 - new job but it begins as a 8 month fixed term contract - normally people are then moved onto a permanent contact but the official line is down to performance and business need, in an area I have never worked before, very very large organisation and not a management role BUT WFH options, pay is more, more room for progression into lots of different areas, less hours a week, less stressful.

YABU - stick with the current job
YANBU - give it a good go!

Confused and hopeful bump!

There's no guarantee of a permanent contract with Route 2.
WFH indefinitely can be isolating

zorbazorbs · 16/02/2022 17:04

@KirstenBlest WFH is a massive bonus for me and the main reason I was applying for new jobs along with the progression option

Do it! Sounds like a good opportunity

Mandofan · 16/02/2022 17:07

Option 2 for sure. I’m currently in a role that focused on stuff I hadn’t really done before and wfh and I love it. Earning more and my outgoings are less as I don’t have travel costs. It’s not always super busy so I have a nice amount of downtime. Just woke up from a glorious nap. Can’t do that in the office

Violetmo0n · 16/02/2022 17:08

Option 2 for me!

DPotter · 16/02/2022 17:08

I wouldn't take an 8 month fixed term contract, from a steady standard contract. I'd be looking for the next job after a month.

Keep looking - don't settle just because the management team are nice

zorbazorbs · 16/02/2022 17:09

I'm wondering if I could try and negotiate the fixated term

What’s your family life like?

riotlady · 16/02/2022 17:15

I would definitely go for option 2!

zorbazorbs · 16/02/2022 17:30

@Toanewstart23 I have a 3 year old DS. DP also works for company 2 in a different department

You’re trading in a permanent job for a temporary one. I’d find opportunities to progress in your current role, negotiate a permanent contract for role 2 - an 8 month contract is really short - or look for another job which actually offer you what your need.

zorbazorbs · 17/02/2022 13:51

It really is a hard choice. I may try and negotiate the fixed term. DP confirmed that in the last 3 years they have only ever said 'goodbye' to one person on performance and everyone else has become permanent.

I just feel so guilty about leaving my current job. I feel like I'd be letting them down

OP posts:
Toanewstart23 · 17/02/2022 13:54

Option 1 sounds stressful
I’d go option 2
I went for the easier fork in the road when I had children
And honestly - no regress whatsoever

ukborn · 17/02/2022 20:45

Don't feel guilty - they wouldn't feel guilty if they had to let you go. It's a business relationship and you obviously aren't happy - being 'recognised' as a manager but with no progression and full of stress? It's not worth it.
If it doesn't work out at this new place move on.
