Arwa Mahdawi got royally irritated by the WSJ piece titled " HERE'S WHY I'LL BE KEEPING MY SHOES ON IN YOUR SHOELESS HOME". The piece, designed to be light-hearted, was "light-hearted in a deliberately irritating way" (sic!). Now she's properly, self-righteously peeved as the piece is way more than she could handle. Namely, it's "imperialist", borders on "hate crime" as "an overwhelming number of people suggested that ONLY A WHITE-PRESENTING PERSON could have written" such a thing. Being a paragon of cleanliness and godliness herself, with an immaculate sense of personal hygiene and social probity, Arwa's taken up the challenge and relieved herself publicly expressing her disgust in the following: "DEAR WHITE PEOPLE READING THIS, I'M GOING TO SAY THIS AS DELICATELY AS POSSIBLE BUT I'M AFRAID YOU HAVE SOMETHING OF A REPUTATION WHEN IT COMES TO CLEANLINESS." Then, she less subtly goes on with the bang of: "When you are a non-white person who has to deal with stereotypes about 'dirty foreigners' it can be irritating, to say the least, TO SEE PRIVILEDGED WHITE PEOPLE REVEL IN BEING DISGUSTING. Still "irritated", see? And still talking HYGIENE, naturally. These white, disgusting barbarians not taking their shoes off and tossing their filthy suitcases on beds. And then the fascists REVEL in it. So utterly revolting it makes our poor Arwa gag, no less. White shoes, white feet and white suitcases ad nauseam. But fear NOT, all you "dear white people", all's not lost here, there's still hope. She ends up with this gloriously uplifting finale: "BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? I'M NOT GOING INTO THE RACIALISED ASPECTS OF HYGIENE DISCOURSE HERE". Oh, well. You just did. In case, anyone's still in doubt on this one, Arwa's ready to help and clarify: "IF WHITE PEOPLE WANT TO BE GOOD ALLIES, IT'S TIME TO TAKE A STAND! BUT NOT IN YOUR DIRTY SHOES, OBVIOUSLY."
I won't be knocking on Arwa's door anytime soon, mind you. Neither to take my shoes off nor to be her "good ally" and "take a stand". She clearly doesn't need "allies". She manages on her own beautifully by the looks of it. Primarily, by NOT GOING into THE RACIALISED ASPECTS OF ANYTHING she's currently pissed off with.
On a more serious note: I just find this article both really depressing and utterly stupid. Or maybe there's something profoundly wrong with me now? Please, do not hesitate to have a go. I'm Polish, I can take it...

OP's post isn't that confusing is it?

She's trying to say she is annoyed by an opinion piece written by a non-white author.opinion piece 1

The opinion piece OP is annoyed about is in turn a criticism of another opinion piece by a white author (who doesn't like removing his shoes when visiting someone else's home)opinion piece 2

In opinion piece 1, the author accuses the author of opinion piece 2 of being racist (due to ethe lack of shoe removal), while simultaneously making some rather unfavorable comments about white people being unhygienic - our OP is upset

Overall it seems everyone involved has way too much time ...

including myself for explaining this (though I am currently pinned under a napping baby)

Bellalastrasse · 16/02/2022 16:38

It was the original WSJ particle I read not the Guardian- just realised

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/02/2022 16:39

including myself for explaining this (though I am currently pinned under a napping baby)

I for one appreciate the heroic effort in the field of OP explanation. Thanks

CorrBlimeyGG · 16/02/2022 16:39

@kagerou The author of the Guardian piece is not accusing the WSJ of racism. She is making a sly dig at the commentators that took such offence at the original article.

PeskyBaboon · 16/02/2022 16:41

Sorry, everybody. I was not only unreasonable but also stupid. This I can take. I am not drunk, however. I wish I fucking was. Apologies to all concerned. I am simply new here (joined MN last month). Never posted anything before today.

I agree with the OP. Why does it have to end up all about race and a lecture to white people. The original topic had nothing to do with race.

And this is beside the point but do people who get uptight about suitcases on beds (usually on their side which I assume hasn’t been directly on the floor, so what is the problem?) not use public transport? I remember reading that found faeces, sperm and other delights on tube seats, so the same stuff she’s moaning about is probably on her own clothes in miniscule amounts.

Suspect6 · 16/02/2022 16:48

Why does it have to end up all about race

It didn’t end up being all about race. It started with it being all about race.

CorrBlimeyGG · 16/02/2022 16:48

Welcome to MN Pesky. You're not the only one that misunderstood the article. Sadly though, the author does makes a valid point, some white people are incredibly quick to go on the defensive when issues of racism are raised. That often means jumping to the wrong conclusions, as has happened here. Worth thinking about.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 16/02/2022 16:49

I saw the headline and decided not to read the full article as I thought it would irritate me. I am now thinking that was a good call.

MintyFreshBreath · 16/02/2022 16:49

Literally no idea what you’re banging on about Hmm

Staffy1 · 16/02/2022 16:51

It didn’t start with race, it started with hygiene. If it wouldn’t be ok to replace white people with another race in the article, which it wouldn’t, then it’s not ok or misunderstood.

CorrBlimeyGG · 16/02/2022 16:53

Staffy, you're completely proving the author's point. It was a tongue in cheek piece that you've taken to be 'a lecture to white people'. Are you this sensitive about actual racism?

Suspect6 · 16/02/2022 16:58

@Staffy1

It didn’t start with race, it started with hygiene. If it wouldn’t be ok to replace white people with another race in the article, which it wouldn’t, then it’s not ok or misunderstood.
The author of the Guardian article says “ But, you know what? I’m not going into the racialised aspects of hygiene discourse here.”

Which is what she had just done in her article, the article was about the racialised aspects of hygiene. It’s ironic, maybe hyperbole (but not so much, really)

PeskyBaboon · 16/02/2022 17:00

Btw. I did not find the article offensive in the slightest, I took an interest in this Guardian's piece for another reason as well: when I came to the UK in 2003, for the first 2 years I worked as a cleaner for £3.50/hour all over London. I cleaned peoples' houses/flats for a living. I have seen a thing or two, never called anyone or thought of anyone barbarian though. Met some very kind and lovely people, some less kind or lovely. Which, incidentally, has got nothing (I still hope) to do with race.

If you are Polish, you would not wear outer shoes inside anyway. You would have slippers for that. ;)

Aspiringmatriarch · 16/02/2022 17:02

Hello Pesky and welcome to Mumsnet 👋
I actually found the article quite funny. Glad you've calmed down now. Smile

Abhannmor · 16/02/2022 17:05

Arwa is a bit of a moanyhole in general I find. I actually prefer to go shoeless indoors. But the rest of it she can shove.

Suspect6 · 16/02/2022 17:12

Btw. I did not find the article offensive in the slightest

Then why, according to the title of your post, did the article “piss you off”? You say the article was depressing and utterly stupid but dot offensive yet it clearly made you angry?

Suspect6 · 16/02/2022 17:12

*not - not dotBlush

EishetChayil · 16/02/2022 17:16

Eh? Are you quite well, OP?

user1493494961 · 16/02/2022 17:17

Let it go.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/02/2022 17:18

@user1493494961

Let it go.
Am I the only one hearing this as Elsa?

I'll get my coat.

Bellalastrasse · 16/02/2022 17:20

Nope, me too @MrsTerryPratchett
Feel like singing it, too

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/02/2022 17:20
Grin
Thoosa · 16/02/2022 17:22

It does seem a bit OTT, but so, TBH, does your OP.
