To consider keeping dd home Friday due to weather?

I know I'm probably being over anxious. Dd travels to school by taxi a hour away from home, we live rural so it involves country lanes as well as driving through villages and towns (taxi collects 2 other children on route). We are forecast 80-90mph winds and are on a amber warning. Its the last day of half term so they won't be doing much, dd has sn's so if the taxi route is delayed or has to reroute due to falling trees she will get very distressed. So AIBU to consider keeping her home?

I would keep her at home. According to the forecast, the wind is going to be a gale on Friday in some parts. It's building up to it now, I can hear it, and I'm on the outskirts of London.

Oakdog · 16/02/2022 14:04

I'd keep her at home in that situation. When it's really bad the advice is not to travel unless necessary and a day at school in your situation is not necessary. I hate the wind, it's bad enough today, so really not looking forward to Friday. Let's hope it isn't as bad as they're predicting.

Luckygrey · 16/02/2022 14:08

I'd keep her at home too, under those circumstances Flowers

LilacPaisley · 16/02/2022 14:10

My dd has sen and used to travel on transport. I would definitely have kept her at home with this forecast.

NannyGythaOgg · 16/02/2022 14:11

I opened the thread thinking 'of course you are being unreasonable' but given the situation, unless the forecast changes drastically, I would definitely keep her home for the day.

Don't forget to let the taxi people know. If it is that bad they will be relieved to miss that part of the journey.

WutheringHeights66 · 16/02/2022 14:13

I would all things considered

hattie43 · 16/02/2022 14:13

I'd keep her home . There will be the likelihood of falling trees if you live rurally and for piece of mind I'd keep her at home . It's one day and as you say not much will happen on last day of term anyway .

Thank you. I do have another child at a local school and she will still be going in (5 minutes away), it’s purely because of the distance and the route.

I was mentally composing an entirely different post, but the update about the level of her disability, her anxiety and the lack of an escort on her transport makes me say keep her home.

It's not about the likelihood of anything happening to her, it's about her anxiety, how it might affect her behaviour, and the possibility that the latter would be a distraction for the driver. Who is also out working during a forecast of danger to life and can't just stay home.

Plumbear2 · 16/02/2022 14:17

In you situation I would absolutely keep her at home.

Akire · 16/02/2022 14:19

Having seen the weather man say this is the worst storm we have seen for decades I wouldn’t send her either. Rural areas will be affect worst with trees branches and if road gets blocked no easy way around. I’ve had texts about power cuts and damage from my electric company.

Userno574328537 · 16/02/2022 14:20

Mine are off Friday anyway as inset day but I would probably would do the same op. My kids school is behind us currently but ds will be off to secondary by taxi in September, thankfully only 20 minutes away though! But I would be anxious too!

Maybe tell her it's an inset day or the school is shut because of the weather.. Only because you mention she's at a SEN school. My son has sen, if I kept him off once he'd expect the same every time it's stormy 😅

Do what you feel is best!

Thesearmsofmine · 16/02/2022 14:20

Keep her home if you feel it’s safer. My dc are home ed and the weather is terrible so we are staying home for the next few days.

Blossomtoes · 16/02/2022 14:21

@MorningStarling

If the school is open send them in. If it's too dangerous they will close the school and tell people not to travel.
This. I’m absolutely staggered at how kids are wrapped up in cotton wool these days.
Casheeeew · 16/02/2022 14:23

The MET often release travel warnings with these types of bad weather. I would definitely keep her at home. She can still study.

SkiRun0077 · 16/02/2022 14:23

We have just been advised by work to not travel Friday afternoon / evening due to severe weather. If she can work effectively at home it’s worth it for peace of mind.

This exactly. When she has a meltdown she’s pretty full on (screaming and sometimes harming herself), it doesn’t happen often but the weather is something that can trigger it. We had a power cut a few days ago and dd was on total panic mode. I wouldn’t want the taxi driver left to deal with dd.

I will call the school tomorrow, I’m sure they will be fine about me keeping her home, they can send her work through google classroom if there’s anything important.

I live in Germany and all schools I Nord Rhine Westphalia are closed tomorrow due to severe weather conditions, I love that Germany closes schools when the weather is dangerous. I would keep my daughter home if I was you.

Leftbutcameback · 16/02/2022 14:29

Whereabouts in the country are you OP? If anywhere in the west country or South Wales likely to be very serious weather. The amber is likely to be updated tomorrow once the storm has actually formed. It can't be any more serious (it's already at the top of the matrix for that) but location certainty may increase to very likely in some places

AledsiPad · 16/02/2022 14:29

No question, OP, keep her home. My DC have INSET on Friday so are home anyway, but we have cancelled the 'out of the house' plans we had and will be hibernating instead. We plan on baking bread and staying in our pyjamas all day! Grin

If very high winds are forecast for your area, and you live rurally, then I would keep her home.

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/02/2022 14:33

I would keep her home, it’s not really safe at all.

Longcovid21 · 16/02/2022 14:38

Could be trees falling on route. I would

Somethingsnappy · 16/02/2022 14:40

Travel is advised against in these circumstances, isn't it? I would absolutely keep her at home op.
