Is this a reasonable 1 year birthday present?

Friend 1's baby is turning 1 at weekend and having a party.

Friend 2 and I were sorting through some of her old baby clothes and she'd put together a pile of nice baby clothes (all in excellent condition, some with the tags and not worn). Designer stuff, Sefridges, Jacabi as stuff like that.

She said she was going to wrap up the pieces (around 10) as the present for the birthday. Even though the clothes are nice I find it an odd birthday present and a bit cheap to give hand me downs as a gift.

Opinions?

Second hand clothes is not a present.

Honestly, before kids I'd have found this weird.

Now I'd be all for it because the last thing most kids need is more toys/crap for the sake of it.

I wouldn't have any issue with being given hand me downs in good condition especially from nice brands. The kid is 1, they won't care what they get and if a parent had an issue with it suggest they're just being grabby and materialistic.

It depends why they’ve never been worn really/how good condition. If she’s never used them because she thinks they’re hideous then I don’t think it’s a good present. If she genuinely thinks your friend would like them then maybe different.

I would include a bar of chocolate for mum - having a 1 year old is tough.

No bother getting second hand things - even used if they are nice and not worn

I think your ungrateful. Nobody is duty bound to buy YOUR child anything. Be grateful some one cares enough to wrap up lovely and in some cases brand new clothes for your child.

I think it’s nice to give hand me downs (especially key pieces in good nick as opposed to a massive bag full of every single poop-stained vest they’ve ever used) BUT weird to give it in lieu of a gift, imo. It’s a nice thing to give someone, but not as a birthday present. Although you could probably get away with the new with tags ones but only if they didn’t smell of her house 😂 I got a used piece of clothing as a ‘gift’ for my daughter once from my SIL and I put it straight to charity. But then we don’t have the best relationship anyway…

Thank you for all the replies, I really like the suggestion to include a little board book or baby toy with the clothes. Might suggest this on x
